San Diego meetup! May 13, 2010 12:57 PM Subscribe
San Diego! I'm coming your way.
I'll be in town for a conference June 3 and 4. Anyone want to grab dinner/drinks? I haven't booked a hotel or flight yet, but the conference is being held at the San Diego Convention Center.
I may take some vacation time and arrive a few days early, but I think Thursday or Friday would be the best days for me. Anyone interested?

We're out of town exactly those days, and probably without a babysitter earlier in the week. Bummer. If you do find yourself in town over the previous weekend (29th or 30th), though, a get-together over good food/drinks could happen.

I think that the rumors of San Diego Mefites are greatly exaggerated. I looked and looked but did not see any when I was there!

Sorry, cabingirl. I was being an antisocial curmudgeon that week.
I've seen two others with my very own eyes (meetup #2 years ago), but one of them moved away.

I'm still here! But yeah, I also went to the first SD meetup, when Matt himself came down. We had three non-Matt people.

Wow, as many as four people at a SD meetup?
Backseatpilot, we might be able to do Monday the 31st, as well.

We had um, four MeFites plus a couple of lurkers/SOs at the 10th anniversary thing.
I'm so busy planning my engagement party and move to Chicago though, that the 3rd and 4th is just too far out to foresee how crazy things might be for me. If I'm in the downtown area those nights though, I might be up for a drink!

It's like a Metafilter dead zone or something...
The absolute earliest I'll be in town is the 31st - June 1 is much more likely, though. I haven't booked tickets yet because I'm still waiting for the paperwork for the conference fees to go through, but once I get confirmation for that I'll update again.

Yay meetup!
I can make it pretty much whenever, as long as it's June 1 or later. If it's on the 4th then Feantari will also be in town.

I can make dinner/drinks on the 4th or 5th, perhaps with a lurker-Mefite in tow.

Awesome possum. Got my conference confirmation and booked tickets. Will Friday the 4th work for everyone?
The conference is at the convention center and I'm staying at the Gaslamp Quarter Hilton, and I have a rental car... and I've never been to the city before. Suggestions for a place to go?

Candlelight dinners, long walks on the beach, and romantic comedies.
I mean, um... maybe something "Californian"? What's good and plentiful in SD that's more difficult to find in Boston? Maybe some authentic Mexican food? Sushi?
Stiff drinks would be a plus.

Let's see...
San Diego is good at Mexican food, both authentic and greasy. The other SD meetup thread had some good Mexican food suggestions, but mentioned none of them were great for meetups. Also, uh, since you're downtown--if you like carne asada and fries all rolled up in a tortilla with delicious hot sauce, get the California burrito at Mexican Fiesta on India Street (8am-4pm). Get it for lunch and then find somewhere to take a nap. Most California burritos have home fries or regular fries in them. These feature crazy awesome crispy hash browns. I still dream about them.
For stiff drinks, I think the Tractor Room could work. I like the cocktail menu, and the appetizers are good. My main concern is that the prices are a bit high there.
Oh yeah, almost forgot-- San Diego is also good at beer, if you're into craft beer...for that there's Toronado, Small Bar, and Blind Lady Alehouse. Toronado has a little back room that's a bit quieter than the front of the bar, so I'd vote for that if we wanted to go there.
Is froyo (tart frozen yogurt with odd toppings like mochi and cornflakes) a thing that's available in Boston? We have froyo shops all over the place here. Some could be quiet enough for a meetup.

Craft beer is all good in my book. We have a Pinkberry around here... somehwere... but that's about it as far as frozen yogurt goes.

Oh gosh I'm late in responding, but I'm in San Diego and would love to meet up. When cabingirl was here earlier this month we had some trouble getting organized, but a meetup DID take place, albeit just a tiny one! Hopefully some of the folks who responded to the earlier thread are still about and interested in getting together.

June 1 would work for me if it was fairly late--I have to work until 8. From the 2nd-5th I have a guest, but the 6th and after is also fine. Even if we can't get something together for this time, we should definitely do more meetups!
There are lots of fun places in North Park, and most of them are along 30th st--so much so that there's actually a beer named after it.

I think I would prefer something on the 4th, but if the 1st is better for everyone that's fine - I'll just be a little jet-lagged.
I have a car, so I can get just about anywhere - is there any particular place in North Park that's a group favorite?

In North Park, Splash seems kinda cool. It has self-serve wine tasting kiosks (OMG The Future!!). Happy hour is 4-6 every day.
I haven't been to Urban Solace either, but have heard good things about it (and their goat cheese/butternut squash dip. swoooon)

For dinner, Urban Solace is completely delicious, but we'd need a reservation with semi-reliable number of attendees (might be difficult for an SD meetup). It gets crowded in there and it's a smallish restaurant.
If this meet-up were to happen at a bar later in the evening on June 1, (Hamilton's, maybe?), IjonTichy and I would probably make it. His dissertation defense is that morning, so serious drinking and celebrating will happen somewhere. Might as well make it a Metafilter meet-up deal... probably our last before moving to Chicago, actually.

8:30 on the 1st then? Or 9? If at least two people who aren't me chime in and say they'll come, we can sidebar this. Actually, I'll probably plan to go for dinner and just hang out and drink for a while with the PhD celebrating, but we'll make sure to still be there for a while after you get off work, ms. exceptinsects.

Last time I flew my MeFi shirt like a flag from the umbrella stand, since it was too hot to wear it. I'll wear it this time though. Also, look for the short girl with glasses and short brown hair, and the boy next to her with the same haircut.
