Old Comments are New Again. May 31, 2010 10:48 AM   Subscribe

Read comments appear as new after restart.

The amount of "new comments" shown on any of the main three Metafilter pages for any thread is resetting itself so every thread looks completely unread when I restart Firefox. Going into a thread and reading some comments, then back to the main page and reloading gives the correct amount of "new" comments, but restarting Firefox then resets every comment to "new".

This is OS X 10.6.3, Firefox 3.6.3. It happens with no extensions enabled, or with my usual set. I don't have any hosts not allowed to use cookies, and 3rd-party cookies are enabled. I've logged out, cleared all cookies, and logged back in again to confirm the behaviour.

Sounds like it's working as designed.

Since it's all cookie and session based, perhaps restarting your browser is killing those mefi cookies or you have something (extensions, greasemonkey) treating those mefi cookies differently than default?

Edit → Preferences → Privacy → Cookies → Keep Until: → They expire

Now it does seem to be working correctly, which is weird because I didn't change anything since the last time I checked it and it didn't work. My browser isn't deleting cookies when it quits, so I don't know what was going on there.

Oh, well, might as well close it up.
