Vancouver meetup July 8, 2010 7:00 PM Subscribe
Vancouver meetup in the near(ish) future? I've just moved to the Greater Vancouver area and would love to meet the local mefites.
I've had a rough arrival in Vancouver, and I know absolutely no one here. I'd love to meet some area mefites and get some tips about my new home while enjoying delicious beverages and/or food. I'm very open to date and time suggestions.

Beach meetup!!! Yesssssss. Maybe a giant potluck picnic! Oh man, best idea ever.
The fireworks are coming up, we could do it on one of those days?
Or in a bar, that's fine too. Either way I'm in.

A potluck picnic meetup at the beach would be superb. And match my starving student budget.

I'm moving to Vancouver from New York in a few weeks, and I also know nobody there! If this ends up happening after August 1 I am in, otherwise I'll catch the next one.

I'd say I'm most likely in. I am going to be non-committal about this though because I got the impression the last meetup involving a mefite passing through town wound up with the poor guy getting stood up. I still feel like a jerk about that.

Kirk, I think I missed that one, and it sucks that it fell apart... but two meetups ago we packed about 15 into the Alibi Room and had a great time. So don't be soured on the meetups.
Fireworks happening on the following days:
* Wednesday July 21st 2010 – The Keg presents USA Night
* Saturday July 24th, 2010 – London Drugs presents Spain Night
* Wednesday July 28th, 2010 – HSBC presents Mexico Night
* Saturday July 31st, 2010 – Concord Pacific presents A Tribute to China
For those of you who are new in town: we have a fireworks festival every summer! It's awesome. It's best seen from English Bay but you could also go to Vanier Park, Kits Beach, Jericho Beach, Spanish Banks, or up to Stanley Park.
We could meet at one of these places at 5 or 6 pm and spend a few hours hanging out before the fireworks start at 10. Can't bring booze though as the cops are everywhere on fireworks nights.

I'm a definite maybe for either of the Saturdays, and a definite no for the Wednesdays.

So, how about we say meetup at 6,Saturday July 31, English Bay? Please someone else help with actual location details as I, like mentioned above, am new to town.

I like the 31st as well. English Bay though ... fucking crazy packed, so how about 2nd Beach, which is the one on the seawall in Stanley Park? Probably still pretty busy but not so crazy and less obnoxious drunken suburban folk. I think as long as you're smart and subtle too it's easy to get away with a couple of beers.
We'd still want to figure out a meeting place, can someone else take care of that? I don't know downtown pubs and bars so well. I'd tentatively suggest though, if we wanted to go somewhere after the fireworks, the Brickhouse on Main, which is cheap, has couches, and is central/close to a skytrain stop.
unrelated, PercussivePaul I clicked on your profile and totally recognize you - I slept on your couch for four days last summer, friend of your gf. haha, small city I guess.

oh I just went back and read the comment from makonan saying they can only make it after Aug. 1st ... but so either we could wait and do it after or use this meeting to plan another one.

I am totally fine with someone else taking the reins on this but looks like someone will have to, or we may be waffling into December. Let's wait for makonan and I would personally prefer not too much of a huge crowd scene....

Wait wait wait! I can do July 31st! I will be in the area, I'll just be homeless and mildly-to-moderately stressed out until August 1st. LET'S DO IT.

ok, reins taken. Y'all haven't seen me drive though, so be scared.
31st, 2nd Beach, Fireworks followed by drinks at the Brickhouse if we're not too tired. I'll work on a meeting place&time when I get back to Van. I'm thinking somewhere around the entrance to Stanley Park, like in front of one of those art sculptures. Anyone with a better idea can chime in though.
alltomorrowsparties, you wanna see about getting this added to the meetup sidebar? Maybe pull in some more people? Looks like, what, 6 or 7 people now. (honestly though, I'd prefer smaller than larger).

Oh...I heard you were on MeFi. Hi :)
We should maybe think about this a bit. I'm pretty certain 2nd beach is going to be only slightly less jammed full of people than English Bay itself. Afterward there will be a massive crush of people pouring through downtown on their way out which will make driving impossible and transit almost impossible. Even getting to the Brickhouse would be quite a challenge, to be honest, unless we're all on bikes. I don't mind cause I usually bike, but if anyone needs to drive or skytrain this is going to be a bit rough.
I see three options:
1. Tough it out. Maybe aim for a bar within walking distance of the beach though. Except they might all be full.
2. Go to Vanier Park on the south side of False Creek, or maybe Kits Beach... find a bar afterward in that area.
3. Do this on a non-fireworks day and avoid the mayhem and enjoy the beach.
I'd vote for #2. I love the fireworks and I'll probably go anyway, but it's pure chaos downtown, and trying to meet up with people and keep a group together would be a headache. I've watched them from Vanier Park and it's almost as good, and MUCH less crowded.

hmm yeah ... I'd agree. Actually I lean towards #3 - combining a meetup with one of the craziest days of the year in the city is asking for trouble.
On the other hand I like trouble, so I'm ok with #2 @ Vanier Park, in which case I hand the reins off to PPaul since I know nothing about the area.
discuss.......

ok, definite lack of discussion.
So let me just ask this: is anyone here really determined to see the fireworks on that particular night? If not, the simple thing to do would be to stick with the 31st and eliminate fireworks from the equation.
How would 31st, 9pm, Brickhouse sound?

Cheers to the end of waffling!
Since I live fairly close I'm gonna head there a bit earlier too (they only open at 8) and see if I can stake out one of the couches near the pool table. You can look for the guy in the bumblebee shirt (striped black/yellow) which is visible from miles away.
Looking forward.

So now I have to pick between fireworks and the meetup. Oh well. I'll probably come to the meetup.
The Brickhouse is a great pub but be warned they don't serve food, only little bags of potato chips. There is food at Radha upstairs but you wouldn't be able to bring it down or anything, it's a separate restaurant. Make sure you eat before you show up!

Coolness. I think I could do this too. (As a note, I wouldn't recommend anyone bike to the Brickhouse unless you can bring the bikes inside - it's pretty dodgy in that neighbourhood.)

Yay it works now!
We had some laughs and it was great to meet a few of you Mefites.
The venue was just about perfect with an abundance of fine scotch
and comfy seating.
I am looking forward to the next time. Till then keep your plates bean side up.

I'm actually leaving in a few hours to visit my family out East, but will be back in a week, and after that my schedule is wide open.
I could suggest various regular bar/cafe/whatever locations, but as an alternative, what about a beach meetup, considering it just warmed up significantly?
