Skip to Menu My Darlin' July 13, 2010 6:14 PM   Subscribe

After I updated my iPhone to iOS4, the "skip to menu" link at the top of the pages of the mobile site no longer works after a page has been reloaded.

In unrelated news, my cat is fucking awesome.

Pretty sure this is a mobile safari issue (nothing we control on our end), if you use the back button, then hit the skip to menu link, it should work.

Dude. You're supposed to eat them.

But seriously, how is it?

I updated to iOS4 and everything works for me.

Also, my dog is awesome.

So the other day I hadn't seen the cat all afternoon, which is weird because he generally follows me & the boyfriend from room to room. Finally that evening I went hunting for him. He was upstairs in the bedroom, surrounded by dead hornets.

My cat is a fucking hero.

I was able to reproduce this.

1) load a metafilter thread.
2) click "skip to menu" (you get scrolled down to the bottom menu)
3) click chrome at top of page to scroll back to top
4) hit the reload button in the location field (after load you are still at top of page, though #momenu is in the url)
5) click "skip to menu", and you do not scroll back down to the menu
6) fucking american league

I think as mathowie said it is a safari bug. His fix of hitting the back button, then "skip to menu" works for me.

BOP,

If you think you've got problems, try MeFi in Opera Mini on your iPhone! You'll never worry about "Skip to Menu" again.

I noticed an odd thing in the Atomic Browser for iPad today. Links to other MetaFilter pages work but links to outside pages don't. It didn't happen in Safari - and I haven't seen it happen on any other sites.

Isn't one [a href] as good as the next?

Joe Beese, try turning off "open links in a new window" in your site preferences. I'm guessing Atomic doesn't like targeted links.

Thanks for the kludgefix, that works, but it's a pisser that safari fails at this seemingly simple task. Every other mobile site should have a "jump to the bottom" link; to have the functionality of one that works undermined makes me grumpy.

You're holding Metafilter wrong.

Ha! Weird. I just encountered the same issue.

With the skip to menu link, although my cats do continue their awesomeness.

Ha! I came here with the express desire to mock iPhone users, noticed someone else had said what I wanted to say, backed up to the main metafilter site, clicked skip to menu, and *nothing*. Whatever causes this also applies to Android 2.2 . Pressing refresh re-enables the correct behaviour.

I'm seeing this in iOS4 on an iPod touch 3G too.

works great on android 1.5.

I just got me a new iPhone, and minor nitpicky-ish request? The icons for saving MeFi bookmarks to my home screen look fuzzy on the new screen.

That would make sense. Sadly, it doesn't look like there's a setting for it. Thanks for the suggestion.

In your MeFi preferences there is, Joe.

Happens to me in iOS4 for ipod Touch and I don't have the open links in new window box checked.

On the other hand, it looks like mobile Safari is now remembering where it was on the page when it forces a reload, which seems like a worthwhile trade-off.

Holy eff! How have I missed that for so long? That's wonderful! That's going to save me like 40 right-clicks (or click-and-drags or whatever) a day.
