Elizabeth Warren follow-up September 15, 2010 3:53 PM   Subscribe

This is the kind of non-MeFi-Related update that should be posted to the blue. MeTa is not the JV MeFi front page.

In my own precious opinion, of course.

That's not quite what the story says, allen.spaulding. As Talking Points Memo notes, she is going to be given a position that reports to Treasury and Obama. Possibly she will be tasked to choose the head of the CFPB, but that's not clear from the ABC story (I have not read the Reuters and AP stories yet.)

Agreed, so I guess it's weak sauce all around. Ah, well...

UrineSoakedRube - It's hard to know exactly what's going on, as the reporters don't really seem to know the Dodd-Frank legislation well. My take is that she's being named the interim authority created by Sec. 1066 of Subtitle F. That said, it's still unclear.

Maybe if we added an editorial on how this makes Obama more right wing than Hitler*.

* I'm just assuming that these exist. It's not like the guy sneezes without shocked cries about how right wing it makes him.

Agreed, particularly the last sentence. It is possible that she's being tapped as interim head, but the language seems to suggest otherwise. I'd be happy to be shown wrong.

Do you know who else appointed people to positions without legislative approval? That's right, Hitler.*

Uh, John Gerretsen is heads up consumer protection, not Elizabeth Warren. Not, wait a minute, it's Graeme Samuel. Actually the Chairman is appointed by the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces on the recommendation of the Minister. It all began in 1955 when the first positive steps were taken to institute the formation of the vigilance commitee, aimed at meeting protective needs of the consumer and to produce better understanding between producers and consumers.

Etc.

Maybe if you can somehow tie it in with Sarah Palin, or Lady Gaga, or Park51. Preferably all three. Shouldn't be too hard.

For the record, while I've noticed how some liberal blogs have been agonizing over each stage in this drama, I've never cared enough to find out the details. So if anyone wants to trumpet this as a masterstroke of statecraft, I wouldn't be able to argue the point.

carsonb: "MeTa is not the JV MeFi front page."

Holy moly, man. That's a phrase. You musta hand-turned outta spalted maple or something, not a wasted syllable. Goddamn.

You are certain of this because you are its starter?

me: MeTa is not the JV MeFi front page.

jamjam: You are certain of this because you are its starter?

Of course not, silly! I'm certain of this because the person who did start MeTa said it:

jessamyn:
1. if the thread was a substantial thread in MeFi, then a MeTa update makes sense (and a possible "previously" MeFi post)
2. if the thread was not that substantial, then make a new MeFi post if it's the sort of thing that would make a good MeFi post
3. If it's not the sort of thing that would make a good MeFi post, maybe just skip it
My opinion on this particular update is that it fits in the third category, and not the first category because that thread under the Previously link in this post is not substantial in any readily apparent way.

hal_c_on, what do you mean?

I'm not trying to get down on anyone, nor argue, nor be fishy in any conscious way. The topic of updates in MeTa is sort of one of my bugaboos, just something that bothers me (I think it's the cognitive dissonance generated by something being labeled "MetaFilter-Related" when it's quite obviously not at all). I personally feel that it's appropriate to broach the subject of updates in MeTa when one is made for a couple of reasons. For one, MeTa is here for us to discuss the site and its uses, so when someone posts an update here that's not site-related in the least (outside of the spurious reason of having been posted to MeFi sometime previously) I see it as an opportunity to discuss policy/etiquette. At least that topic is MeFi-Related. Also, updates have been discussed on MeTa in the recent past with some pretty clear guidelines being laid out by the moderators, and that warrants referencing when the subject arises.

As to the number of my bylines in this thread, what can I say? There's not a limit to participation here in terms of commenting. I suppose I oughta reign it in a bit, or try to consolidate all of my thoughts into the fewest comments possible, but that's not exactly practical all the time.

I hope I addressed your concerns, but if not I'd just ask that you be more specific with them.

He's probably certain of it because it's a well established fact. Maybe you should pay more attention?

I remember in one of the early metafilter podcasts it was a call-in and carsonb called in and was all "hey matt and jess this is carson, the b is silent" and that was pretty goddamned funny. Ok, carry on.

Yeah this is just one of those cases where we'd just closed another MeTa post a bit earlier and figured whatever, people who were interested in this could see it and if allen.spaulding wanted to talk to people about it, that would be AOK fine. It's a small potatoes update on something not really worth its own post and it's not like we're short on bytes. 9 times out of 10 we'd close something like this. Today we didn't. I'm sorry if that gives people an eye twitch. It would probably give me an eye twitch.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 7:43 PM on September 15, 2010

Sorry for the eye twitching. Not only was the post discussing this possibility fairly involved, but Warren seems to be a mini saint on the Blue, up there with Roger Ebert and PZ Myers. In addition to her own FPPs, she frequently comes up in numerous threads, her works are recommended in the Green, etc. It's been something of high drama for months without a clean outcome.

I didn't put this on the Blue because I agree it's not newsworthy enough to merit a new post. At the same time, I thought her popularity, the unclear outcome, and people's interest would make some want to talk about this, go back to earlier predictions from that thread, and allow those who didn't follow to catch up. I also try not to moderate my own threads, so I stayed out of it. I'm not offended if people want to close this up.

I have a twitchy eye, and I don't know the cause. Can I just blame this?

I cannot stay, I came to say, I must be going.
I'm glad I came, but just the same, I must be going.
La La...
I'll stay a week or two,
I'll stay the summer through,
But I am telling you,
I must be going.
I'll do anything you say,
In fact I'll even stay!
But, I must be going.

Elizabeth Warren is awesome.

Fuck wallstreet. Fuck the banks. Fuck Jamie Dimon and that cocksucker who runs Goldman Sachs. (Lloyd Blankfein, what kind of loser is named 'lloyd'? Lloyed Blankfein, apparently)
posted by delmoi at 3:25 AM on September 16, 2010

Hey, FYI did you know Lloyed Blankfein's religion is "Evil"? That's what wikipedia says, and has said since, um today.

Anyway, the ABCNews article's headline has already changed to "Exclusive: President Obama to This Week Name Elizabeth Warren to Special Advisory Role to White House/Treasury Dept to Form New Consumer Agency". Maybe she could recommend herself to run it, but that would be a bit gauche.
