Best post contest for December is a go! November 29, 2010 5:54 PM Subscribe
December's Awesome Post Contest is a GO!
So yeah, what we talked about recently is going to officially start tonight at midnight (pacific). Here are some basic rules:
- Posts made any time in December of 2010 are eligible (pacific time reference, again)
- There will be a single best post crowned for the month, picked by cortex, jessamyn, and myself on a podcast we'll record the first week in January.
- We will have three more official categories: best single-link post, best multi-link post (think 2-10ish), best megalink post (think giant wikipedia style dump of 25+ links).
- We'll have lots of silly one-off categories we'll make up for favorites that fit the bill (think "best single link youtube post that actually makes single link youtube posts OK to like", etc)
- We'll award a new iPad (or a $499 contribution to a charity of your choice) to the best post
- We'll award $100 gift certificates to the winners of the other three official categories to a store of the winner's choosing (think Amazon, Apple, etc) or a charity of their choice.
That's about it, sound good?
(also, we're turning off the ordering for t-shirts in a few hours, so get on that quick if you haven't made an order yet)

Yeah, I really thought today was the 30th! Blame it on all the automated "end of the month activity is about to happen..." emails I've been getting today.

If this November/December confusion means that Miko is somehow in the running, I'M FOR IT.

What, is Miko out of commission? Cool, more iPads for me! No, I kid. Miko is worth more than an iPad. She's worth a bunch of iPads--like four or something!

If Miko's post can't be in the contest then she ought to get some kind of honorary prize to mark the awesomeness that was that post.

No, no, no honorary prizes! Last year was veddy veddy good to me and Thanksgiving was something to celebrate the day, not prize-focused. This year I plan to sit on my hands and read all the other awesome posts, feet up on the desk, with a good cigar. Well, not a good cigar since I quit smoking, but the equivalent in relaxation. Good luck to all and happy readin' and clickin' to the rest of us!

If I'd known there'd be prizes, I would have saved my latest, which was so amazing it thawed item's icy heart. Now I got to go find an all new amazing link? Bah humbug.

I've been thinking about making a spiritual sequel (on a similar-but-different topic) to my big Cartoon Network post that won a few years back for quite awhile now, even making laughably futile attempts to hold myself to it with vague public pledges. I've amassed a respectable collection of links, but it's easy to procrastinate on the actual composition part, and I've twice blown through a relevant anniversary in September as well as the one-year mark after the original post last Christmas.
Would it be weird to try finishing it for the two-year mark, in context of the contest? I would have at least attempted to do it regardless, but since it's going to be of a similar topic and format, I don't want to seem like, "Oh, a contest! I'll just do the exact same thing as last time." Seems unoriginal.
I've got a lot of other ideas, and plan to try posting as many of them as I can do justice to. But should a semi-follow-up post like that be one of them? Or would it maybe be better to leave it for later?

Hive mind, special snowflakes, please hope me?
You could make them moderate Tea Party/climate change/Middle East posts for a month. That would teach them.

I once turned the front page inside out with a single Unicode character in a feeble attempt to win. No pony. I really wish that thread could have stayed backwards in the archives without breaking parts of MeFi.

Aw, man. Now I'll feel bad about taking the iPad.

Man, what I could do with two iPads.
I could duct tape the backs of them together, and have a double sided iPad. Or just on the hinge, so I could have an iBook. I could have an iPad for each side of the bed. I could run two programs at the same time. I could have one for my four year old daughter, so there would be no more peanut butter smudges on the screen.
Actually, I'd be pretty happy with just one iPad.

If there was going to be an ipad for the best first post attempt I might give it a go, no wait, how about a consolation prize for the most pathetically lame but well intentioned first attempt at posting that was deleted quickly to mitigate the posters embarrassment?
