Most popular cities? February 2, 2011 5:05 AM   Subscribe

Confused about "Most popular cities in the past three months" in IRL

What does the "Most popular cities in the past three months" list? We had a meetup in Rome on 10 January. OK, so there were only 5 of us, but we didn't even make a "Rome, Italy (1)" listing. I'm not complaining; I'm just wondering what the MPCITLTM list lists.

It lists, in descending order, the 20 cities that have had the most MeFi meet-ups over the past three months. I have no idea how it goes about selecting from the myriad cities that have had only one meet-up to round out the list, but whatever the method Rome didn't make the cut.

(NOT ROME-IST)

That should be, 'the 20 cities that have had the most meet-ups and/or events over the past three months'.

What this means, of course, is that 2-3 dedicated people could make their city most popular by meeting 50 times in 3 months, as opposed to, say, a large group of 200 mefites meeting once a month. Even though the latter is more people (more individuals and more people congregating in aggregate), by this definition, the former is more popular.

We could weight meetups based on the number of users, and then weight users based on their favorites. And then Anonymous shows up and it's all over.

Come on Melbourne, let's accept this challenge!!

Aren't favorites enough of a popularity contest?

No! They're bookmarks!

Hell I'm married to a Mefite and we are in an ongoing committed meetup. Sad to say though that as I age events become less frequent.

Hey, as I said, I'm not complaining! Thanks all for satisfying my curiosity.

Well, ah, yeah - it sorta happens that way...

I am going to have a meetup at home every evening for the next 90 days at 6:00. Noone except my wife, Son, and our dogs are invited. Metrowest Boston is about to become more popular than NYC and San Francisco combined...

...or not...

We let the database decide. I didn't specify a way to sort once it's past the number of events for a particular city so the db puts them in whatever order it sees fit. Usually that's by an internal ID number of some kind, but sometimes sorts can change from one running of the query to the next.

I'm pretty sure the basic qualifying definition of a meetup is that advance notice is given and any mefite is invited.

"Most popular cities" doesn't seem quite the right description, incidentally - it's not like people decide to have a meetup and then go : "Ooh, shall we make it Auckland this time? Or Chicago again? Actually Rome's my real fave."

"Most events" or something like that might be more accurate?

We could also go with "happenin'".

I don't want to pave irl.metafilter.com so let this post serve the above.
Meetup at our place: Bring a dessert on any day (We'll take care of dinner or lunch) and maybe also a decent beer or vodka on non work days (The Dept. of Immigration currently requires that I don't work). Don't be allergic to cats. There is a pool on the roof for when the warm comes.
Offer is valid except for 3/10, 4/17 (god I hope I got that right) and 11/12.

SF is going to have the most epic meetup this weekend. With scotch.

The rest of you should pack up and go home now.

pb: Can you just type "San Francisco" in that box? No need to query the database or anything.

Or change the term 'meetup' to 'happening'.

That would most certainly harsh my mellow.

None of the rest of your barbarian shanties and hovels can compete with the cosmological alignments of the great imperial capital, popularity contests be damned.

pompomtom, no time like the present to start.
