Listen Up! March 3, 2011 1:26 PM   Subscribe

The Listening Room -- which drew a lot of interest from Mefites on its initial appearance back in late January -- is back up.

I've restored the Mefi room and would love to see the music community that coalesced there come back. I know that some other Mefites were working on a clone, and that's awesome, but this one is up and hosted. If the clone is up somewhere, that'd be a great addition to this thread.

I hope to see you all there!

(I'd have posted this in the original thread, but it's closed now.)

I should note; it's not 100% yet; clearly, it's still being worked on (audio playback has been sporadic, at best) so expect glitches.

Woohoo! I was going to post about this but I'm not sure it's ready yet... still a closed-ish beta and pretty buggy at that. I can't hear any music. Still worth keeping an eye on as things pick up.

Yeah, music is sort of in and out, and I'm not clear on whether the interface is intentionally trying to keep me from uploading more than one track in a short period or just plain hella breaking.

Lack of any clear upcoming tracklist in this reincarnated version may be an attempt to conform to internet radio constraints, I guess? I seem to recall something about Not Broadcasting Your Playlist Ahead Of Time or some such.

Goodbye, remove button, we will think fondly of you in your absence. Or at least fondly of your being absent.

Gack; And, now it's down again.

I understand that the remove button was used for causing grief, but doesn't the absence of it inspire a certain kind of grief as well? Can someone queue up a bunch of unremovable noise?

Apparently you need to register for a private beta before you sign in with a Twitter id as the above link directs you to do.

I'll wait til it's working properly and doesn't need all these steps to just try out.
posted by philipy at 3:38 PM on March 3, 2011

Huh. I used the link earlier, logged in through twitter, and got right into the MeFi room. Now, though, it's asking me to register for a private beta. No fair changing the rules!

Wow, he managed to make it even buggier than it was before.
posted by empath at 4:36 PM on March 3, 2011

According to his twitter, i don't think it's officially relaunched yet.

Yeah, I think we jumped the gun on this. I mean, Abe probably should've put up a "coming soon" page to keep the riffraff out until it was ready. Hopefully all the bugs will be squashed by the time it actually launches.

Glad people are still excited about it though. I was afraid I'd be the only one in our room when it came back.
posted by The Winsome Parker Lewis at 6:23 PM on March 3, 2011

I dont have high hopes for how it will be when it comes back, but hopefully its cool. Seems to me its going to go the way of Muxtape though. I think any working version of this will be from mefi people who find a way to make it for logged in mefi users.

I think I broke it, it's stuck on a song but it's not playing it. It obviously doesn't like funk.
posted by Memo at 9:27 PM on March 3, 2011

I must be a masochist... I keep going back and trying to make it work, even though it is profoundly broken. It keeps giving little glimmers of false hope when, out of nowhere, a song will play in its beautiful entirety. And then, silence returns and you can't queue anything else up, and the chat disappears, and you're all alone on a dead page again. Terribly frustrating.

Abe keeps tweeting that he's getting close to a launch, but he also keeps missing the deadlines he's announced. Not that he has any obligation to us, but it's a bit annoying for those of us who are waiting with bated breath for Listening Room's return.

I have code that is working, but no real bandwidth (or money, for that matter) to host a permanent site. It's more like the original LR and less like the heaping pile of beta that LR is currently.

I can't promise this will be up for long, but I'll try to at least leave it up over the weekend for fun and feedback. Collaborative Jukebox is the place.

I hope to see some of you there (although I don't know how much time I'll actually have since I'm helping a friend move this weekend).

Nice, narwhal bacon. I showed up and successfully

- changed my name
- said "butts" in chat
- uploaded a song
- listened to that song

I suppose it'll be more fun with other people around, but as a dry run I am pleased.

I'm going to hang around in there, too, as offby1. I wonder how many users it can support?

I'm in there now. Seems stable and the interface is nice too.

Narwhal's thing looks pretty good! Let's use that instead.

I only had a little time to test Collaborative Jukebox.
I showed up and successfully

- changed my name
- said "butts" in chat
- uploaded a song
- listened to that song
But it looks like both of the important features are working!

I mentioned this in chat there, but I'd like to bring the discussion into MeTa: How would the moddership look upon bringing this project under the Metafilter umbrella? Perhaps as an adjunct to Mefi Music, tied to Metafilter accounts.

Seems to be doing the core things well.

I've only tried it for a few mins so far though.

Ten people in the room right now and no glitches. This is great! Somebody get this guy some bandwidth!

This is great! Much less glitchy than Listening Room was.

I'm excited for this to get going again.

I was also helping Abe out with the turntable graphics for the current beta. Abe liked this Rega tonearm, so I did a simplified version, and added a bit of woodgrain texture to the table border, and some re-coloring of the parts. Not a huge change from before (since Abe already liked the minimal geometric stylized thing he has going on), but I'm pretty happy with the new one.

Wondering if you guys have any advice/opinions to change it further? Big stylistic changes probably won't happen, but regarding colors, extra drop shadow, etc.. ?

Hey, this is brilliant, narwhal bacon. I'm just terrified that I'm going to bump my touchpad and accidentally remove somebody's song and then be totally mortified for the rest of my life because I'd never do something so unspeakably rude on purpose.

Is there a "Are you sure you really, seriously want to remove this song, you self-absorbed jughead? Y/N" failsafe on the Remove thingie? If not, could there be?
posted by FelliniBlank at 4:19 PM on March 4, 2011

yes Narwhal's version asks you to confirm before removing a track. Today everyone's been very good anyway and so there havent been any removal wars
posted by memebake at 4:21 PM on March 4, 2011

Oh - and huge props to narwhal bacon for getting a working version going for the mefites!

Bummer; everyone seems to have vanished. CJB is very, very quiet right now.

I totally do random shit on weekends that keeps me from being at the computer steadily, is my deal. I'm likely to be a faithful M-F person, but Saturday and Sunday not so much.
posted by cortex (staff) at 11:21 PM on March 5, 2011

Today is the last day it'll be up until I figure out how to get it fully hosted and paid for, without costing me a lot of money or alerting the RIAA. Since yesterday wasn't as active as I thought it might be, I've bumped the transcoding from 56kbit to 128kbit to see if that makes any difference in audio quality.

got a few tracks queued at the moment ... come and join us

I see that narwhal bacon's occupation is: Computer Thaumaturgist.

Very apt sir.

The silence makes me sad. CJB really needs a good long-term plan!
posted by The Winsome Parker Lewis at 7:30 AM on March 7, 2011

Oh no! What happened? CJB is down! Of course, this now gives narwhal bacon the chance to host it at cjb.cjb.net ....

narwhal bacon, if you want to pursue the S3 idea as an experiment, I'd gladly kick some cash into funding a month or so of operation to see how it goes.

Oh damn, I'm blind.
posted by cashman at 8:12 AM on March 7, 2011

So here is my plan:
  1. Finish polishing the code and make it available for everyone on github. I feel you should be able to run your own site if you're so inclined to do so. Also, if something should happen to me (I get bored, I go broke, the RIAA kicks down my door, etc.), someone else can easily take up the reins.
  2. Look at what it would take to host on Amazon, along with how to cover costs.
  3. Announce my site to you fine folks via Projects.
  4. ???
  5. Profit
The first step shouldn't take me too long, but I have no idea how long #2 will take. Abe did some work on LR over the weekend, and it's not nearly as bad as it was Thursday night. I'm hoping it will actually be somewhat functional this week so we can all meet there in the mean time.

If this thread isn't open in the future, I'd love a MeMail notification when you've got this ready. Or maybe a new MeTa thread, if it's deemed appropriate.

Ditto.

And I imagine I speak for most of the people in the thread there.

Abe tweeted that LR is now live. I can't get in, so the masses must be crushing it.
posted by narwhal bacon at 3:19 PM on March 8, 2011

I got in. When I arrived, I had three tracks already queued up that I had added the other day, before Abe officially opened the thing. Looks like it retained the metadata for those songs, but no actual audio. Apparently when I showed up, that corrupted stuff broke the room. Sorry to empath (the only other person in there at the time).

Anyway, I cleared out the junk and the room started working again now. Please come join me if you're bored! Seems considerably less buggy now than during my last experience with it.
posted by The Winsome Parker Lewis at 5:48 PM on March 8, 2011

I saw this URL in another LR channel http://getsatisfaction.com/listeningroom and thought others might want to know about it, too.

Audio problems continue, so you'll need to be paying attention if you're queuing music. A bad upload stops the fun for everyone, and only you can remove your own songs from the queue. :(
posted by narwhal bacon at 11:38 AM on March 9, 2011

Just had a quick gander at the listening room beta. Its a little confusing: tracks that have already played are displayed down the page, the queue of tracks waiting to play is in the left sidebar, and is 'secret' - this is to comply with the radio license. When you chat your chat is attached to the currently playing song and then follows it down the page. Seems a little less buggy. Not being able to see whats coming up fundamentally changes the feel of it, but its still quite fun watching your record spin round.
posted by memebake at 3:26 PM on March 9, 2011

Seeing how the mefi LR beta room has been rather dead this past week, I went ahead and released my code and also set up a website for us.

I'll be following Abe's site to see how it progresses, but it's just too buggy to be fun at the moment.
posted by narwhal bacon at 9:27 AM on March 15, 2011

I can't get to the site.

Please keep trying; some of it may be that the magic may not have fully propagated yet.
