While 4chan is a nasty place it deserves more respect then mefi gives it in general. The pure content creation of 4chan is something to be admired. To know the current memes is kinda cool. Its about 2 years after 4chan creates it that The New York Times picks it up.
And yes these memes are a bit thin for a fpp.

I'm not sure business cat originated with 4chan. They do crank out some memes, but the advice animals have taken on a life of their own. If anything I'd say Reddit has picked up the ball with these lately.

No restrictions, you just forgot to put the "http://" in front of your original link. Without the http you link gets interpreted by the site as a "relative" link and the mefi URL is appended to the front.

This call-out needs a call-out.
You can flag something, you can use the contact form, but you went for the meta call-out with an in thread link in a thread that wasn't going badly.
I'm all for taking derails to meta, but using meta preemptively seems like some serious thread-shitting.
If you all you can contribute to a thread is commentary about how said thread shouldn't exist, then don't.

these are not new memes, and it feels a bit thin for a MeFi post. Apologies if I should've just flagged and moved on.
Flagging and moving on is generally the way to go if there isn't something really notably weird or problematic about a post—it sends a signal that someone thinks the post isn't great, and if a lot of people do that we take a hard look at whether the post sticks around.
In this case, yeah, I think there's not really an extraordinary angle to the post; I dig that you don't think it's great and why, and that's a totally valid way to feel, but flagging is about all it needed.
As far as motivation, "feels a bit thin" is a pretty good reason for you to flag; if you think it's thin, that's fair, totally flag it. We as mods might well agree, a whole of other users might agree, who knows.
On the other hand, "these are not new memes" not so much, because if there's not something specifically sort of notably time-sensitive about the content of a post it's not usually a real big deal when it gets posted. A meme doesn't have to be new this week to make for a good post, and to some extent I think it having been around for a while longer and gotten its footing actually makes a better post for mefi since there's some more substantial web history and content built up as the thing matures and develops submemes and reactions.
And I feel like that might be a bit of a culture clash thing; I get the impression that on e.g. Reddit there's a sort of expectation toward timeliness and currency, that something being a week or a month behind the curve of initial meme propagation is likely to be derided for being "old" or "slow" or whatever. But mefi has a smaller posting volume, somewhat meatier posts in general, and an expectation that people will often take their time to get a post right for the front page instead of just blasting something they're amused by up without pause. So, different ways to do things but what makes a post not great for one site may not be an issue for another.
Personally, I like meme roundups in general, so long as it doesn't become a thing where everybody is posting updates or also-rans in multiple posts. The biggest problem with a post about a meme or some memes being "old" here is if its literally been done before—a double post to mefi itself is far more proscribed here than a post about something that was posted elsewhere on the internet a month or six months ago.
apparently the mods have restrictions with link-shorteners, as well.
Not what happened there, as davey_darling explained; there's no automated block on link shorteners here (as much as anything because automating it would be a pain in the ass). But we do generally prefer folks not to use shortened urls on the site and will change them in place when we see them, generally speaking, because there's essentially no benefit on mefi for a shortened link (no premium on space here, especially in the internal content of a tag) and there are a number of drawbacks (relying on third party for url servicing, scummy tracking/redirect/iframing policies of some of those third parties, obfuscation of url means readers can't guess where they're headed, etc).
