Postcards Are Great March 24, 2011 12:06 PM   Subscribe

Do you like to get mail (that's not a bill)? Do you like postcards? Do you like weird/funny/interesting/unusual postcards from another country?

I'll be in Morocco during most of the month of April for my research project (see this AskMe). I always seem to find interesting postcards that I'd like to send to people, but my list of snail mail associates is small. Instead of watching TV, that's what I usually do with my downtime at night there - write in my journal, write some postcards, and then to bed.

So I thought, why not ask the people here at MeFi, I'll bet they'd like to get a postcard. Jessamyn gave her stamp of approval to post this in MeTa, and she's the first entry on my "Postcard Recipient!" list.

If *you* would like a postcard, just memail me your snailmail address.

Or, actually, you could post it here if you'd like. I'll have internet access there, too.

I know this is the second postcard-related MeTa in this 24 hour day but I guess this is a bully pulpit sort of situation and for that I beg all of your forgiveness. I just really like postcards.

Two things I forgot to mention:

1. You don't have to send me a postcard in return (unless you feel like it!)

2. Requests are allowed - I just had one asking for some kind of postcard that is "dusty" (picture, theme, or even physically), which I think is pretty awesome

I collect postcards that picture nudity. Or death. Death or Nudity. (which I think is a Depeche Mode album title)

Postcards! Yay!

I like postcards!

MeCha does a voluntary holiday card exchange every December. Maybe there could be a MetaFilter postcard exchange. Or a list somewhere of people willing to receive postcards....? Trying to figure out how to manage this without plastering addresses all over the intarwebs.

Hey, I'd love a postcard from Morocco! I can send you one in return, from my odd assortment of postcards from Eastern Europe that keep finding their way to me even though I don't really want 'em.

Burhanistan, I could dip it in some kind of kif extract and you could smoke the postcard.

I'd love a post card from Morocco. With a picture of someone wearing a fez.

I want one! All that ever comes in the mail for me is bills and advertisements. A postcard would be a great change of pace!

Sorry. I'll lay off the exclamation points. I'm just excited at the prospect of getting my first non-dental postcard ever.

"EVERYONE SEND JESSAMYN A POSTCARD" project?

My post office already thinks I'm some type of celebrity they've never seen before because I got an awful lot of mail from very very random places. "How do you know someone in Antarctica?" they'll ask. I say that I am a very popular probation officer.

All you postcard-lovers know about Postcrossing, right? My wife has 4 big bins full of postcards *to send*. I have no idea how many she's received.

Not to hijack, but I guess I'm the only person with an inner 12 year old that loves stickers. If you'd like to trade stickers let me know. The Rock Art Brewery sticker that cjorgensen sent me has a place of honor on my beer fridge and yours could join it. MeMail.

You won't find what you're looking for until you name that street. Post office won't deliver with or without your signature.

I joined Postcrossing after seeing it mentioned in a previous thread here and can vouch for its awesomeness! I'm even meeting 2 Postcrossers next weekend & bringing one home with me (for 2 days, not for keeping).

I also "owe" Coldchef a postcard after getting one from him via Twitter request, so will keep my eyes open for death & nudity (I actually collect death/morbid cards myself so have a few, but alas they're not blank).

If you're serious, I can send you a "saucy" British seaside postcard from my British seaside city. That goes for anyone else who wants a postcard from Brighton too (or instead of "saucy" you can opt for, uh, "non-saucy" I guess). MeMail me if you're interested.

I will send TWO postcards to anybody who sends me a card showing civilian airliners or airports, any country, any era (no military aircraft or bases). I have a friend who's a retired airline employee who collects these, and I'd love to get some to forward on to him. Anybody got such a thing?

I have a thing about postcards that 'feature' a really boring thing like a bad street view or a telecom tower or something equally yawnworthy. I suspect a boring postcard from Morocco would be somewhat of a challenge though? (Luckily I live in a town that provides ample opportunity for boring postcards, if that is your thing, I can return the favour)

I'm into postcards from camps - military, recreational, church, youth, whatever. Also seaside resorts.

Miko and honey-barbara, MeMail me your addresses. I can definitely supply seaside resort, and will do my best at a boring scene.

Said this in the other postcard thread, but anyone who wants postcards from my random collection (I always buy more then I end up sending, and bring the rest home with me) , MeMail me!

Ooh, a postcard from Morocco. It's on my list of "places I will visit someday." I'm in, and thanks for the offer!

Miko, if Lackland AFB is close enough, I have a card for you.

Honey-Barbera and Doublehappy, a dismal view of a dismal street in Ufa, capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan (Russia), will go to whoever sounds most convincing in their love for gloomy underexposed sunset shots. The runner-up will get a card from Nassenheide, a tiny town in Kreis Oberhavel (Brandenburg, Germany), that's so yawnworthy it doesn't even have a Wikipedia entry.

I would like a postcard from Morocco reporting on the state of the resistance against the French, sent by the wife of a one legged veteran named René. It does not matter too much what is on the front. Thank you.

To the three people who MeMailed me - your postcards have been purchased and will be on their way soon.
posted by EndsOfInvention at 1:22 AM on March 28, 2011

Hello everyone, and thanks for all the responses - your addresses have been carefully written down, along with any special requests.

I had several offers to help pay for postage, which is a lovely thought, thank you - but I think I'm OK on that front. :)

Lots of people asked for my address in return, and instead of sending out a bazillion memail replies, I thought I'd just include it on the postcards somewhere. Any suggestions on where to place it so the various post offices don't mistake it for the "To" address and I end up getting lots of postcards sent to myself?
posted by HopperFan at 10:32 AM on March 28, 2011

Doublehappy, if you MeMail your address to me the card from Ufa is yours. You can hold it over your head to block those UV rays - no scalp cancer for you, nossir.

Hopperfan, I think if you write your address in tiny letters under your signature (on the left half of the card) and the recipient's address in big letters on the right half, the various postal agencies will figure it out OK.
posted by Quietgal at 12:47 PM on March 28, 2011

I work in a bunch of places where post cards don't really exist. Hard to believe, right? There's simply no market for them, as there's almost no tourism. Case in point: Niamey, Niger - haven't seen any here but I'll have a bit more of a look around this week, whilst trying to avoid kidnap. Also Lubumbashi, in the DR of Congo - I scoured that town and never found a single one.

If you want postcards from somewhere south of the Sahara, memail me and I can promise I will take months to get around to it, and the post service will likely take months on its own, but at some point you'll get a random postcard from some crazy country.
