Sorry to hear he is battling Parkinson's disease :(

Thanks for pointing this out. Would have missed it otherwise.

How terrible that Mr. Moran is fighting Parkinson's though. :(

Oh man, that guy!

I mostly remember him because I'm a longtime Law and Order fan, and it always tweaks me to see the same actors play different roles on there, and he's played a bunch.

He's definitely a character actor who stands out.

I knew that thread was going to end up legendary. Sorry to hear about Parkinsons, wow. But I hope it gave him comfort to know that he was being thought of.

Oh hell yeah, he was in Sweet and Lowdown.

Definitely. I instantly knew his face when I saw the headshot, from Law and Order and Woody Allen films. It's heartbreaking to hear he's got Parkinson's.

Yes. He's the kinda guy you have to cast if you want an upper-echelon mobster or corrupt cop. Love his stuff.

Unfortunately, Mr. Moran, your response did not answer the question and will have to be deleted.

(this is why I'm not a mod)

That was awesome indeed, and I feel a bit sad now that I didn't know who this guy was until the question was solved. I'll keep in mind his acting credits and see if I can't pick any of them in the local video rentals shortly.

Wow! Thanks for posting this, or I would have missed it. I love Dan Moran and knew about the Parkinson's from back when I worked in casting. He's such an awesome actor, and I love that he's now "Metafilter's own."

'Are you that bald, beady-eyed, sandpaper-voiced, bad-complexioned, evil actor?'

Also known as the "clown guy" who got "waffled" on the first episode of Third Watch.

Wow, that's odd. He looks so much like my grandfather did, 30 years ago or so, and my grandfather also suffered from Parkinson's.

Five weeks from now, the MeFi Jr. Detective Squad will have to deal with budget cuts, and will grudgingly accept using the badges of another branch of the MeFi law enforcement unit.

What an awesome guy to be so gracious and friendly in a thread where he's been described as "bald, bad complexion, menacing, sandpaper voiced, beady-eyed". I would have been tempted to say something more along the lines of, "I bet you're no beauty queens, you little shits."

His own résumé describes his voice as "froggy." The job of acting requires knowing and accepting the qualities that make you unique and castable, even if they're not conventionally attractive.

Do you think Danny Trejo thinks he's a good-looking guy?

So I was joking that I would have deleted Dan's comment, but I probably would have deleted most of the ones following.

Is there some sort of guideline for when the "pretty much anything goes" switch is flipped in AskMe, because I can't figure it out. Maybe I'm just clueless when it comes to determining in which situations non-answer comments are acceptable, but I honestly don't know why most of them are still there.

Is it after it passes some sort of fuzzy notion of notability, kind of like art? You can't really define it, but you know it when you see it?

Not a firm one, no. Basically this almost never happens [like maybe a few times a year] where we don't delete off-topic comments usually because something totally notable happened [the kitty got better! she said "yes!" the famous person showed up in the thread!] and we look like bizarre meanies if we delete comments.

This is basically why we have guidelines and not hard and fast rules, so that we can make judgment calls like this to not delete the five comments that came in after the guy showed up. I know this makes some people who like hard and fast rules twitchy, but that's basically how we make the determination.

people who like hard and fast rules

Yeah, that's pretty much me. Thanks for the answer.

I just get weird when I see someone who's normally a pretty mindful person about site etiquette come out with something completely content-free like "Wow, great answer!" And it seems strange to me that this is left untouched in certain cases and it was kind of hard to figure out why.
