In which MeFi Mag works on their issues July 10, 2011 9:25 AM   Subscribe

MeFi Mag is back again with a new issue on jobs and work! The print copies are available here, and the pdf is available for free here!

There's no Mag Cloud .pdf because we went a little wild this time and Brandon's interview with iamkimiam has sound!

Kim won't let us tell you what the proper way to say MeFi is, but now that we know it, it confirms we were right all along!

Also in the issue: Daoist comedians, man-boob-jobs, sex chairs (and my just realized regret over not making a NSFW pun in a title), astronauts and more!

COMING IN AUGUST:

Cool. Whether temperature or temperament, we want your coolest work to beat the summer heat. What does being cool mean to you? Ever try too hard to be cool? How's cool constructed? What's the uncoolest thing you ever did? How do you keep cool? Got any cool recipes?

Shoot for a July 16th deadline!

COMING IN SEPTEMBER:

Games. Improv games, word games, emotional games, Chris Isaac games… Whatever the pastime, MeFi Mag wants it. Expect lengthy digressions on two-square and palindromes!

I hope so. Otherwise the story about turning into a pelican from last issue would be pretty improbable.

From "Working with the M-Set":

There’s going to be a MetaFilter panel at the Association of Internet Researchers Conference this October. DiscourseMarker and her colleague will be presenting research on discourse strategies surrounding conflict in the November Favorites thread .... moderator cortex will be data sharing with a behind-the-scenes look at MetaFilter, lewistate with more research on ethos and identity, and I’ll talk about negotiating social meaning online through the pronunciation of the M-Set.

Please, please, please tell me there is going to be audio of this. Please. Please, please, please. Please?

There will be audio, but ironically the entire panel will be mimed.

Or should that be 'the entire panel be mimed ironically'?

Very cool. I missed earlier posts on these, so I didn't know MeFi Mag existed!

iamkimiam, I really liked reading about your research! What a fascinating topic. I appreciated reading about pronunciation inconsistencies within a single individual -- I thought I was the only one! I weirded myself out the other day when I realized that I think [mɛfi], but say [mɛɪfi].

Because it's unofficial, there's only so much promotion we can do here without becoming jerks. So we're counting on the content being good enough that people will find out about it.

What program you are using for the layout of the magazine?

Various versions of Indesign, but the choice of software has zero to do with the layout.

For some reason, the .pdf page starts out all black, quickly becomes all white and there's nothing on the page.

What, specifically, do you mean by ".pdf page"? The PDF linked in the post is 36 pages and has opened fine on Mac and Windows systems. Do you know what browser and it's version that you're using? Are you readying it in the browser or downloading it? If downloading, do you know what version of Adobe Reader you're using?

First thing I'd try is clicking on the link, see if the problem occurs again. Let me know if it does.

So why is this thing "unofficial," and what would it take to become "official?" It's really pretty good.
posted by crunchland at 3:24 PM on July 10, 2011

Unofficial means Matt has nothing to do with the mag. Zip, nada, zero. He, and the mods, find out what's in each issue when it's released.

To be official, that would to change and I don't think anyone is interested in that. Seriously, klang isn't housebroken and I play with matches, it's a bad meetup.

"So why is this thing "unofficial," and what would it take to become "official?" It's really pretty good."

It's unofficial because if Brandon and I fuck something up, it's on us. Putting it on the mods and Matt is a headache they don't need.

In order to become official, there'd have to be some embracing of a formal structure and while I certainly could be cajoled to do work like that for money (if anyone else wants snappy magazines for their official communities or anything really, feel free to talk to me), it basically opens up a lot of complications for MetaFilter. Plus, Matt'd have to be interested in making that happen. Instead, right now it's just the world's best website fanzine (better than the 4Chan Free Press and SA Sentinel, though I hear the Reddit Review is doing excellent work).

I have just read the interview with iamkimiam by Brandon.
Fascinating. Totally nerdy but very lively and funny.
I was first interested in the nerdy part but I realized this is all about communication and community, my turf. Surprisingly yummy.
I was surprised that Brandon did this on Skype and not through email (because it would have been a lot easier) but it was worth it. Great job.

Just a note: "p21 continued on p32" is very "print" and seems misplaced on a screen.

Are you saying jumps pages seem awkward on screen?

Yes.

This not an "issue" nor a "mistake", just an observation related to my personal interests.
I suppose that reading about iamkimiam's work made me observe how a content feature is related to the medium.
The Web is changing our usual formats. It is a huge issue in journalism these days. People are exploring how some features are inherited from other media and are not necessarily useful on the Web. See for example Jeff Jarvis' The article and the future of print.
I was a magazine guy for a long time and jump pages are useful for printed magazine reading. You want readers who are not interested in a topic to be able to see that there is other stuff to discover.
On a screen, there is no page to turn, nothing is "hidden" beneath. You can just click or scroll.

So your solution here would be to have a jump, just have the user scroll? Or would you not do jump pages at all?

Just out of curiosity, how many downloads are you guys clocking?

Don't know exactly, maybe ya'll can help us figure it out.

The first two issues were under Josh's personal Magcloud account, which I of course don't have access to. He mentioned the numbers, but I've forgotten.

For the third issue, we created a new Magcloud account, which we share. So for that issue, the travel one, 115 copies and 88 were downloaded, but not sure how many were downloaded as part of the print sales or by themselves.

Then there's the matter of us hosting a PDF on the website. For that June issue, according to Urchin 6, there were 379 entrance points for the issue, but 181 bounces, so that means...198? but there where 384 exits from that page, yet 436 visits to that "page".

Also, most of you are using Firefox 4 on Windows and wearing no pants. Except that that one guy in Bolivia.

Jharris: Yes!

I loved Gradius, even though it was one of the most constant sources of frustration when we were playing it with friends. We'd trade off the controller, and the inevitable deaths just made the whole room mad.

Sean: Awesome!
posted by klangklangston at 7:22 PM on July 18, 2011

Gradius is good (in fact a large part of the article would be about the Vic Viper spaceship in the game, which has a larger cultural reach than you might think), and has the advantage of being something I can mostly write from memory.

The Avalon Hill article, though, I think could be deeply interesting, hindered by the fact that I'll have to research almost all of it. Until recently AH to me was just that company that used to make all those crazy wargames, I had no idea how wonderful they were. We really need a new Avalon Hill. (Unfortunately the Avalon Hill of today has fallen all the way down to the center of board game gravity, i.e. Hasbro, and the escape velocity from that gigantic planet is formidable.)

What is the policy with submissions? Do they/should they/can they be things that have been posted in Metafilter before? Because I'd really like to post about these topics, and would hate if submitting to MeFi the magazine meant I couldn't post them on MeFi the site.
posted by JHarris at 3:13 AM on July 19, 2011

In fact, now that I think about it, I could probably fill all 32 pages of a Games issue by myself. I'm working on a second 20 Real World Games article for Gamasutra, and I might have some excess material.
