Do we need a new sub-site for this? Meta-Subject perhaps? Wherein yet another subject of post clues in, joins up, community theoretically gets better. In this case, it's Matt Bird, whose blog Cockeyed Caravan (underrated movies + other stories) got FPP'ed by Iridic.

I don't think we need another subsection, but the call outs here are always awesome!

Maybe add a wiki page? (there probably already is..)

Or, how about a tag, like guestappearance or cameo?

How about if we just call the tag ScottAdams and be done with it.

We don't need a new subsite.

The place might feel roomier if we build a sub-basement for storage. I mean, honestly, Matt, your file cabinets alone take up an entire room, and you almost never use them. Let's move them out of sight, and when you need them, you can get them. It would also be a good place for Cortex's giant doughnut collection, which he doesn't seem like he is ever going to get around to eating.

No offense to Mr. Bird, but when the subject of the FPP is just some random blogger, it's not all that impressive. When Steve Wozniak joins, sure. I'm not sure this warrants a MeTa, let alone a subsite.

Any time a blogger who has produced significant and worthwhile content joins the site as a result of our linking out to him, it's worth noting.

Actually, I was kidding about that part -- more just pointing out that Mr. Bird had seen fit to throw in with us all here as we continue the hard work of whatever it is that we're all doing here when we could be otherwise watching TV, playing some first-person shooter, re-reading Moby Dick, getting stoned, pulling the wings of flies ... whatever

Astro Zombie: "Any time a blogger who has produced significant and worthwhile content joins the site as a result of our linking out to him, it's worth noting."

Considering how much stuff gets linked around here, actually no it's not.

I understand the impulse to point and gawk at bona-fide famous people popping up here, but I wish we could resist even that. Rolling out the red carpet for some users and not others is, I think, somewhat antithetical to the point of this community. Save for the mods, the only thing that sets one user apart from another is what they contribute here.
posted by mkultra at 2:48 PM on July 19, 2011

mkultra, I take your point and find that I tend to agree with you when it's with regard to some "notably famous" name. That is, I can find the gawk-factor rather embarrassing. But in a case like Matt Bird's here where it's someone I've never heard of putting together a darned fine blog which has obviously required an enormous amount of drive and commitment (and taste), well, why not acknowledge it?

Most people join MeFi because they've been drawn to it somehow (word of mouth, mucking around online chasing a few links). In this case, the opposite sort of happened. Metafilter was drawn to Cockeyed Caravan. That, for me, is notable.

I don't really get the impression that there's such a high hurdle for what warrants a MeTa that this doesn't meet the requirements. 2 entries down is a "Schmoopy Thanks" thread FFS. I think it's kind of neat when the subject of a post signs up. Except when they act all cray cray like Scott Adams. But either way I like having it pointed out.

royalsong: " Maybe add a wiki page? (there probably already is..)"

There wasn't one that I'm aware of.

There's the Famous page, and the Published Authors page.

So I just created a "Hey, That's Me!" page on the wiki. Will add Matt Bird and Rob Rummel-Hudson now, both of whom signed up today.

Please feel free to add to the page yourselves, too.

EmpressCallipygos is talking about Yoz Grahame, who appeared in the Starship Titanic thread.

If anyone gets bored, you can read through the Sideblog Archive. Many of the "Hey, that's me!" appeared there.

Also, Rachel Sussman came in and commented in the Oldest Living Things thread, where I liked to a bunch of the items that she covered on her blog/journeys.

OK, the page has been updated for all of 2011. I literally read back through dozens of pages to make sure I didn't miss anyone. Oh, and I added Woz and skipped Tao Lin. Will add Yoz and R Sussman tomorrow.

Will use the sidebar blog for the rest. Many thanks for the suggestion, filthy light thief!!

Interestingly enough, Yoz didn't join MeFi as the result of Rhaomi's beautiful, epic Starship Titanic post. He's been a member since Nov 22, 2005.

I could add him in and indicate that he was already a MeFite. But it adds a wrinkle: others would then qualify for inclusion including folks like Adam Savage and Charlie Stross.

I'd started writing one on Monday, just because it seemed like it should go on the timeline. I might keep it short, so I don't just start writing CWAA repeatedly.

Thank you! I was really dreading doing that one. ;)

At the time, it was an interesting to see how the mods handled him. And then how they spoke about him and his behavior to various websites and media outlets.

Yeah, about the time of the NPR interview I was thinking I should write that whole weird thing up on my blog, but then every time I thought about it I was like "is this how I want to spend the next two hours of my life, making notes and remembering all that in detail?" so I've just been playing Realm of the Mad God compulsively instead.

zarq - thanks for making and adding to this page! I added a few famous members who joined because they were mentioned in/the topic of the post. Sadly, they didn't stick around. At least robmanuel asked a question with his $5 entry fee.

You're welcome! I'm having fun with it. And thank you for adding people!

OLTW and CTORourke have both used AskMe since they joined! CTORourke even posted an "Should I Have Eaten This question?" :D

I was surprised to learn this morning that John Siracusa joined MeFi to comment the last time one of his comprehensive review articles at Ars Technica was FPP'd. And it appears he may have corrected his article because of something pointed out in that thread. Perhaps he'll show up in the current thread?
