So what does a guy have to do to get a listening room rockin' around here? I'd like to revive memebake's listening room for MeFites if anyone else is interested.

It was announced here in May, and hit Projects in June. It was pretty rockin' for a while, and I hung out there when I could.

But it's dried up now. Maybe people don't know that there's a keen GreaseMonkey script that tells you how many people are in the room from the MeFi main page, but maybe that's the problem: nobody wants to join an empty room, so nobody's clickin' the link.

I loved it, during the times it had 5-6 people in the room, taking turns queuing up music and discussing it. Found a few great new artists that way. What would it take to convince some fellow MeFites to make this their listening option of choice, or at least to keep it open in a tab?

Maybe the Cabal has a listening room that everyone else is hangin' out in and nobody has told me, but I kind of liked this when it was semi-popular. Anyone else want to try to get a regular userbase going?

To piggyback: anybody like turntable.fm?

We really just need an alert system. Tell people to flock, they'll flock. How to make that happen is its own question.

We're very sorry, but while we would love to let you in and rock out with us, we need to currently restrict turntable access to only the United States due to licensing constraints.

We are working very hard to try and get you in as soon as possible.

No way anyone from inside the U.S. would know this, but my issue with turntable.fm is that it excludes a lot of people (including me!) from participating for (understandable, but regrettable) licensing reasons.

If there's a subset of people who'd be into turntable.fm, count me in. It's unfortunately restricted outside of the US (and requires Facebook access), but those of us who can use it have been thrilled. I hang out in an unlisted room with friends every day while I'm at work, and it's a pretty solid way to chat and listen to tunes. And they just released an iPhone app yesterday!

The problem with these things is that it winds up being 20 people all uploading their three remixes of Hit Me Baby One More Time and I just can't sit through all that for one little spin of my precious obscure future blog post track.

This is a kind of thing MetaChat is good at. We used to do it all the time with MeCha Radio. We've also been having some fun with public Google+ hangouts lately.
posted by Eideteker at 11:06 AM on September 14, 2011

Oh, I agree, carsonb (rhymes! ha!). I much prefer the radio format, where everyone takes a turn DJing for a block of time. You soon learn who has the same musical tastes you have, and who has the musical tastes you want to have. 'S pretty cool.
posted by Eideteker at 11:07 AM on September 14, 2011

Well, these (this, mixparty, I assume turntable) also have removal functions, so.. it's not like you're forced to listen to all those remixes if everyone agrees that they'd rather listen to something good.

Or you can take the source code and spin off your own server for more civilized folk.

Also people who upload multiple songs in a row, ugh. So crass. *scoff*
posted by carsonb at 11:13 AM on September 14, 2011

=p (and then someone just broke the red/color theme, so oh well)

I like the voting structure for song removal in this goodlistenr, as it seems to be silent; if enough people vote to remove it, it's done, as opposed to one person broadcasting their loathing of your choice. On the other hand, you have no idea who uploaded what, or how long the queue is.
posted by curious nu at 11:17 AM on September 14, 2011

Try mousing over the songs in the queue. The pop-up bubble gives their length and who uploaded the brack.

Fancy!

Someone just tell me if we end up moving this to a new place. mefites in IRC is weird . . .

It's only weird if you don't feel dirty about it.

Its fun to have it busy again! for people who want to know when the room is busy, there are also Feeds (rss, atom) that report the number of people in the room (when it changes, at 10 min intervals). Or there's the greasemonkey script to stick the number on the mefi homepage, as posted at the top of thread.

doublehappy: narwhal bacon put one together a little while ago: mixparty.org; but I'm not sure anyone goes there any more, which is sad, because I enjoyed it when I wasn't on dialup."

Mix Party has been pretty dead, except for a couple regulars that pop in and out to check it (seemingly whenever I'm not on). I sat idle all day for a few weeks and didn't see anyone. I'd love to have another group show up and spin some tunes. Maybe someone can do a post to the blue that highlights both projects, so we both get exposure?

If you haven't been on since I first announced it, there have been a lot of changes.

Rats, I missed it!

Well, I tend to be in the mefi listening room pretty much every Saturday from 11am to 3pm EST while at work, streaming old school hip hop from my home computer. Come join me, so I can spend less time browsing for songs to play and more time working!

http://turntable.fm/metafilter

I made a turntable room. You need at least 2 people in the room to play music, so if someone wants to try it out MefiMail me and I'll stop by. I hang out in various Turntable rooms often. Honestly the taking turns and points accumulation aspect makes it a lot better for me than the homemade sites by Mefites, sorry y'all!

I'm a little AFK right now, but I can certainly stick my avatar's butt in one of those DJ chairs for the moment. So if you're on turntable, feel free to pop in.

That was really fun, you guys.

There are some other sites I've experimented with that seemed decent, some more or less laggy or glitchy than others.

I have to say, and I'm kind of in the minority in that I don't like Turntable very much. I find the design really busy and annoying, and I'm not a fan of the whole avatar scheme. I had the same problems with uploading and lag (in fact, it felt like I had more) and I had to watch those stupid raver avatars just sort of bobbling around while my tunes were stuck in limbo. It was like they were mocking me. Jerks.

I also don't like that I can't play with people on the other side of the world. Come on. That's why the internet is cool.

I'm back and I am working a double overnight shift. Oh yeah.
posted by louche mustachio at 5:49 PM on September 17, 2011

Currently a few people in there.
I've tweaked the site slightly so that rooms stay open for a bit after the last person leaves - that makes it a bit easier for people to find each other in there.
Hope to add ogg support soon.
