Is the MeFi IRC chat still in use at all? (server: irc.metafilter.com, #mefi)

I've checked that and the old EFnet #metafilter channel a few times over the past week and no one seems to be hanging out in either.

yah, it is. we're not usually very active and we're mostly shy around new people, but otherwise we're still around. (excusing gym visits, that could probably apply to me as well.) last night everyone's attention was mostly fixed upon #blogirc, which is hosted every wednesday night.

I was in yesterday. I read about it in a recent thread and was all what the hell let's fire up chatzilla.

There's never been a critical mass of people there. I think the record attendance has been six or nine.

Well, it's no skin off my back to idle there and see if anyone shows up.

No, I'm not net.dead, don't kick me! ;P

for anyone interested in stopping by the channel, the host of the server has in the past asked us not to idle in the channel all day (we weren't at the time, but). out of courtesy to him i'd ask people not to do so... (unless he notices this thread and says it's ok now). thanks...

Well if we can't idle, would it make sense to set up specific times when people should go there? Can there be one time each week announced somehow? That time could be decided as an attempt for all MeFi IRC users to at least make an attempt to show up. Like a virtual coffee klatch.

that's a nice idea, for those people who aren't in the cities that get togethar all the time *sniff*

sorry, zach. there actually is a specific time, about 10pm CST, which i should have mentioned. not everyone's free at that time, though, so sometimes chats get pushed back later by virtue of the fact that if no one else shows up, you are likely to leave, and then the next person shows up and then they leave, etc... you almost have to luck into more than one person being there at the same time.

Wow... I never kept track of what happened with #blogirc after I accidentally stopped hosting it due to server woes. It's very cool to see that the Wednesday tradition lives on!
