Can't favorite on AskMe November 11, 2011 9:39 AM   Subscribe

Can't favorite anything on AskMe. Clicking a + takes me to the top of the page and does not add a favorite. No problems on MetaTalk or the blue.

I am using Firefox 3.6.17 (I do not want to upgrade). Javascript is on (I tried toggling it), tried disabling AdBlockPlus, still no good.

Have you tried running through the steps here? That's a good starting point.

It sounds like maybe a JavaScript library isn't loading for you. Take a look at this thread from a couple days ago and try running through the steps I mention in the first couple comments.

I'll try that, thanks. Just confusing to me why the problem would exist on ask but not metatalk or the blue.

I checked the thread you mentioned, and when I click on this link you suggested, I see text written out of the source of the page, even when disabling AdBlockPlus on it.

Wait, try clicking the [+] under my name. Actually everyone try that and see what happens.

Yeah, I'm not sure why offhand. In the last thread a browser extension was the culprit. If you're running anything beyond AddBlock like Greasemonkey or NoScript you could try disabling them—maybe there's an Ask-specific setting lurking in something there.

I see text written out of the source of the page, even when disabling AdBlockPlus on it.

That's a good thing. That means you can reach the necessary JavaScript library. Now try this one. You should see more JavaScript. That means you're all set to go. Now clear your cache. That should force your browser to grab new versions of those files.

Sometimes if you have a network problem the browser can't grab some of the background files and it stops trying. Verifying that you can reach the files means it's not a permanent network problem. And forcing a refresh will usually clear things up.

The [+] under your name works, 2bucksplus. And since you're so concerned with site testing, you'll be pleased to learn so does [-] as well.

The problem marble is describing happens to me ALL the time. I think it is a bandwidth problem on my side. It happens when my connection slows down. I reload the page and the problem goes away. I also have a problem where I'm logged into Metafilter, and I open a MeFi link in another tab and it opens the tab, but it logs me out in the new tab. Again, this happens when my connection slows down.

I wish these quirks didn't happen, but I've assumed that it's my problem on my end and not something that pb can do anything about.

marsha56, you're not running the MetaFilter Scroll Tag Greasemonkey script by chance are you? We recently tracked down some intermittent logging-out problems to that script.

So sorry pb for not coming back here sooner. Yes, you're right, I'm using the Scroll Tag script. That must be the source of the problem then. Thanks for the fyi!
