Ooh, fun. "Still Alive" is actually by Jonathan Coulton, and I think it is on Spotify, if you want to add it.

That question is definitive chatfilter and should be deleted.

Of course I participated.

Joanna Newsom's "Cosmia"
Joanna Newsom "Only Skin"

Enjoy your twenty minutes of Joanna Newsom, everyone!

kdern: "EVERYTHING by the National"

I think he's referring to The National's entire discography, which is a sentiment that I wholeheartedly agree with.

I was surprised at how much is still not available on Spotify. (Although I have to admit I was not disappointed that Joanna Newsom was missing.)

Wait hang on I misread and now have to reformulate my joke:

"Enjoy your twenty minutes of not Joanna Newsom, everyone!"

DONE AND DONE

That question is definitive chatfilter and should be deleted.

I flagged it and moved on, per the protocol, but the post stayed up and I lost a valuable snark opportunity. The system doesn't work.

I eagerly await my impending trip to the reeducation facility where I will learn how "What songs do you like to listen to over and over again" is different from "What's your favorite song."

Did you remember to put "We Built This City" on there?

Admiral - I tried to word the question so that it wasn't chatfilter. I was asking for help finding more music (as the prior post was worded, 2 years ago), not just chatting about everyone's favorite song.

I do realize it's borderline though... perhaps the post survived because 75 people marked it as a favorite?
posted by kdern at 1:26 PM on January 18, 2012

If you posted "What are you eating for lunch today?" you'd get even more favorites and participation than that. Everybody is an expert on what they're having for lunch! And they're all fascinating.

Whatever the reason, I'm pretty sure that's not it.

For some reason those incredibly open ended song/band/tv show rec askmes drive me crazy. IT'S CHATFILTER! I proclaim, yet nobody in my office listens to me . . .

Even worse, it's: What songs do you like to listen to over and over again? Here are some examples!

I was asking for help finding more music (as the prior post was worded, 2 years ago),

I'm surprised the other thread stayed up, too. There's clearly nothing wrong with asking for new music recommendations, though it seems to veer into chatfilter when the prompt is "Give me recommendations based on your idiosyncratic preferences."

Obviously, the nature of recommendations will always inherently be imbued with the personal tastes of the respondents, even when you ask for something specific. But when you just leave it wide open as "What songs can you listen to repeatedly in any genre whatsoever, this is free form go nuts" that's as chatfiltery as they come.

The Mods work in mysterious ways.

That question is definitive chatfilter and should be deleted.

Every great once in a while we're horrible softies and let one go. Usually it's something in the vein of a list-making thing where the end result is not just folks having chatted but folks having compiled something collectively. It's not a formal thing, it's not something that we really do on purpose, but one of us ends up not deleting it and so does another and at the end of the day it ends up just not having been deleted.

There's no clearcut defense of it, it's just chatfilter that got a lucky shot at clemency. People seem to like it when that happens, even if other people (or even the same people in some cases) have serious understandable twitches about it still being up and undeleted. I am sympathetic, and twitch myself, but the world is mysterious and it's probably best to let these things just happen now and then.

Here's to the hope that your gooey, noughatty softiness doesn't mean we get inundated with "...but you let THIS stay up, why did you delete mine?!" metatalk posts.

Well, that's good. It's a mysterious universe and these things happen. I'm relieved to know that my chatfilterfilter doesn't need to be recalibrated.

One day I hope to post the chatfilteriest question in the history of AskMe and have it stand with hundreds of answers and favorites and everything.

I'm thinking "Can you tell me about your cat? I have a cat, and I'm not sure if he's normal. He's black and white and cat-shaped. I really like him because [long list of cute and entertaining things he does] but sometimes he's annoying because of [long list of annoying things he does]. Would I like other cats? Can you describe all the cats you know and post several pictures so I can see what other cats look like?"

I bet it'd be fine if you just started it out with "I'm writing a book."

Yeah, chatfilter... I posted a similar askme a while back, it got nuked from space... I can't argue with Cortex's "shit happens" response above, but, I've got to admit that I thought "WTF" when this stayed...

posting here shouldn't be about playing the lottery... just sayin'

Thanks for creating the playlist! Just to clarify, but I was the one that said EVERYTHING by The National and that was the fan girl in me that got excited and had to capitalize the word EVERYTHING. But, what I meant by that was put their entire discography on your list of new music to listen to because it's oh so good!

Well, if you can't find "Hands" by King Tuff, use Ruthie Ruthie instead.

Also: total chatfilter, A+ would post again.

My response to this thread:

Click link
"I wonder what Spotify is?"
Read features.
"It can't be free"
Read pricing structure.
"Wow, this is even BETTER than Pandora, which I haven't been able to use for the past few years since it was closed to everyone outside America."
Read small text at the top.
"Spotify is not available in Australia."
Sigh.

Lollusc, the similar Rdio is available in Australia. Never used it myself (as it's not available in the UK), and I don't know how much it costs, but it might be worth a look.

Bah. They may be chatfilter, but for someone like me who was raised by a pair of Top-40 loving parents and lived a Top-40 teenhood and still lives a Top-40 adulthood, threads like that are a gold mine.

BTW, Spotify "helpfully" uses your network connection and onsite cached music data to stream to other users. Keep an eye on your internet usage.

I'm still trying to figure out how to scrobble to last.fm...
posted by Karmakaze at 10:14 AM on January 19, 2012

As a Canadian listening to the Spotify playlist right now (and all day yesterday) I can recommend Unblock-us.com - you give them $5/month and they let you use their DNS service that proxies Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, BBC, etc through servers in the appropriate location. It's a Canadian company but I think is designed to work anywhere in the world.

I'm still trying to figure out how to scrobble to last.fm...

I did this awhile ago, and it was more of a pain than it needed to be. You need to have the App Finder in the sidebar, which I think I got by re-downloading (updating, not upgrading) the desktop program. You need the App Finder to get the Last.fm app that lets you scrobble.

That's odd, it never used to work that way (you could scrobble for a long time before they introduced the App Finder). Try Edit>Preferences>Scrobble to Last.fm. Works fine for me on my PC (and intermittently and seemingly at random from my phone).

Lollusc: they definitely want to expand, but licensing/dealing with the labels has been tough for them - they took years to get into the US. Hopefully they'll expand to other countries soon.

Oh, and thanks kdern. Up with this sort of thing.

A nice song or two in here from artists I know but songs I didn't - Florence & the Machine (Cosmic Love), the Ellie Goulding remix, 212 by Azealia Banks (I thought I was one of like 5 people who listened to her), and long distance runaround by Yes. Some great new songs I'd never heard - Strange Mercy by St. Vincent & These Moments by Antoine Dufour.

Thank you for the question and the meta and thank you Cortex and company for letting it stand. I'm giving up chocolate this year, so I need the music to help keep me from going slowly insane.

I hadn't planned on it being as fun as it was to look at each piece of artwork the various people and groups chose. It added to the mood. Beatles and dogs and city scenes, portraits or just funky fonts. I heard the instrumentals used for a few hip hop songs (Gangstarr's Beyond Comprehension being one). Also, confession - I listened to Joe Jackson's Steppin Out and grabbed a dress and twirled as I looked longingly at the ceiling. I still have 75 songs left or so.

For the playlist you may want to change the Active Child - Body Heat version - for some reason it's sped up at the beginning. Also, the Fight the Power from P.E. is a live version from Revolverloution, better to go with the one from Fear of a Black Planet.
