Pony request! IRL photos in the sidebar.

Cortex mentioned the age-old tradition of shout-outs the other day and at last night's meetup we all bemoaned their passing. The Chicago Cabal* thinks a big part of that is due to the fact that photos only show up in the particular event that spawned them, so it's unlikely people will browse photos from other meetups. How about a little box in the sidebar of the last five photo links across all meetups?

Not even close.

I should add that we're aware photo links show up next to city names, but those fall off quickly and there's rarely more than one or two on-screen at any given moment. A separate box would encourage more pics, I think.

Demerits for Tears for Fears earworm, but yeah I think this is a good idea.

I was extremely pleased that Morning Edition's fluff on Jesus Christ Superstar outearwormed the Thompson Twins for me this morning.

I support this party pony. but not because there's a Cabal or anything. TINCC

FYI, we got shout-outs y'all're missing. (Not as much as we're missing y'all, but there it is).

And one more paragraph, for good measure.

To my everlasting shame, I can't figure out how to view the Holy Sidebar that you speak of here. I read the wiki, I searched the google, to no avail. A little help, please?

Go to the front page of MetaTalk and look to the righthand side? What do you see on the righthand side of the front page of MetaTalk?

Lynsey, eamondaly is talking about the sidebar on the front page of MetaTalk, here. Above the sidebar is a Deck Ad, and then below that is a list of Meetups: Proposed, Upcoming, and Recent. The list of Recent meetups includes city names and a photos icon if the meetup has photos. You can click that icon to see the list of photo links that have been posted for that meetup.

Aha, as usual, I was Doing It All Wrong. Got it now. Thank you Jess and PB.

This is a good idea.

Also, it's way more fun if people take a moment to caption their pictures if the meef are comfortable with that.

I like Tears for Fears.

Let it all out!

Aww, you guys. I'll be back next month. By then I should've settled into my new diet/exercise plan and can afford to shuffle my gym schedule around a bit and play with my eating schedule.

Fucking schedules for everything.

Shout outs are fun but I worry about people who never get shouted out to.

We should create a QR code that, when viewed on MetaFilter, gets replaced with the currently logged-in username. Just include one photo of that code in each set, and no one gets their feelings hurt!

I worry about people who never get shouted out to. (the young rope-rider)

Anecdotally, I don't think I've ever been shouted out to, but I still always enjoyed looking through shoutout photos. I agree that there seem to be many fewer meetup photos lately, and I miss them. I like putting faces to usernames.

Shoutouts too often felt like popularity contests in either the creating or the posting thereof, and the insistence on meetup photos always made me anxious - I dislike having my picture taken, but I don't like feeling like a party-pooper or left out either. Frankly, I have been not very sad to see both practices decline; I found them more alienating than fun. I would rather not encourage either to make a comeback by highlighting it or what have you - it has been a lot more relaxing to be able to simply enjoy a meetup for the event itself.

It's totally okay to go to a meetup and tell people that you do not want your picture taken. I've been to many meetups where people have asked to not be in any photos and people were always gracious about that. Yes there have been hashed-out-in-MeTa exceptions but they are very rare. We want to highlight the community aspects of MetaFilter and people getting together in real life is part of that. Shoutouts seem to be limited to much older school members and seem to be limited to a really small set of meetups.

MeFiChi--at least--is great about not-photoing people who don't want to be photo'd. I would hope folks at other meet-ups would be similarly kind.

But there are usually funny or interesting moments (where is the origami army, bevosangryghost?!) that are great to see and share. I think it really helps the tone around here, having a chance to see everyone, laughing and hanging out, as people not as usernames. Every time I post in IRL and I see the little "remember, you're going to see these people in real life." I think that's a pretty good point and meet-up photos remind me of that!

Not true! I have a MeetUp poster on the wall next to my desk AS WE SPEAK that has a shoutout to you from brujita at a meetup at my house here in Asheville back in....2009?

I like looking at meetup pictures, but almost no one includes comments or at the very least labels the people. So I might as well be looking at a random picture of strangers. That's not near as fun.

I try to go through and add names where I know them. There are also people who don't want their real name and MeFi handle mixed up or especially attached to their photo, so there are a lot of things to think about.
