DONATION STATION December 3, 2012 2:19 PM   Subscribe

Child's Play Charity collects money, toys, and video games to improve the lives of the young patients in children's hospitals across the world. Over at MefightClub we've just started our third annual annual donation drive. [previously] [previouslier] If you'd like to donate too, we'd love for you to do so under the MefightClub as MeFi-offshoot banner, but donation any which way would be a fine thing for you to do. It is a Good Cause.

Two years ago, we donated $4155.00, and last year we made i to $4444.44. We're going for one gazillion dollars this time -- we shall see if we make our target! Please consider joining us in helping sick kids, whether you're an MFC member or not. [MefightClub thread is here]

Woo Child's Play! Check out this touching moment from one of the PAX Q & A panels if you'd like to hear a personal account of how the charity helps people. Get some tissues handy in case you're allergic to Youtube.

But is it annual?

Bi-annual, it would seem.

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. I think we (being MefightClub) did it first two years ago around Christmas time, then again last year, and this would be our third time.

Child's Play itself is an ongoing charity organization that takes donations at any time.

Many of our members have donated privately -- several times in many cases -- throughout the year, but this is just a Thing we have come to like doing as a group, because, you know, the kids and Christmas (or your favorite other- or non-denominational holiday) and stuff.

Like I said, if this post gets people to donate in their own name, that's great, and if they want to join us in giving a nice big lump sum to Child's Play, that'd be super cool, too.

They're just joking because you typed annual twice in a row by accident.

Go MeFightClub!

Whoops. I posted that this morning with my coffee before running out the door. Morning coffee makes me repeat things. Also, morning coffee makes me repeat things.

$4444.44.

That's like death, six times!

Given the context, I think you can be fairly certain that the tricky gamester who topped it up to that exact number at the last moment wasn't trying to make that particular allusion, there.

These are the dickwolves guys, right?

Correct. Make sure that's the deciding factor when considering whether or not you'd like to help kids in hospitals get a little joy.

I remember it the other way around. Many people cited Child's Play as a mitigating factor to excuse Mike's terrible behavior.

Anyway, just thought I'd mention it, in case some people didn't want their donation to lend credibility to these guys. There are lots of children's charities out there.

Fair enough. Nothing wrong with full disclosure. For what it's worth, my understanding of the situation is that while the charity was very much a PA-conceived endeavor, and Mike and Jerry still use their celebrity to promote it, it's a pretty separate entity these days.

Further disclosure: I once applied for a PM job there and got past the initial screening but then bombed the Excel test because I was hell of nervous *grumble grumble*

There's more than one way to do that, though. But yeah, I think the horribleness of someone should be at least one of the factors people can and should consider when they choose what charity they choose to donate to.

I'm glad they do good, but it doesn't excuse their unapologetic bad.

Maybe I'm way off in my thinking here, but haven't most men perpetuated rape culture and been assholes about it if and when they're called out on it? Unfortunately, I know I have (and here on MetaFilter no less). It seems to me that you'd be hard pressed to find a charitable organisation that doesn't have some problematic founders or major proponents. Kind of like Matt's recent Tshirt dilemma.

Not that I'm trying to excuse that whole thing, mind you.

I can't and won't speak for most men. I can only say that the whole thing left me with a bad taste in my mouth (along with their boorish behavior on and after their aborted appearance on "Jordan, Jesse Go!".

Of course nobody's perfect, but they're just on my very short shit-list.

Oh sure, yeah, that's completely understandable. A couple of things from their web series made it pretty clear to me that I'd probably not enjoy hanging out with them.

I don't think they directly benefit from Child's Play (God, I hope they don't get speaking fees or anything) and I feel it's a good cause, so that outweighs it for me. I misunderstood your point, I think, so apologies.

I should mention that a group of friends and I are also doing an event for Childs Play this month, a live-streamed 24-hour Smash Bros. Marathon Dec. 15-16. You can check us out here.

Honestly, for my part at least, I don't have any great liking for the PA guys or investment in that community. I don't even read their comic.

This quite literally has nothing to do with that. This is about giving money to get games to sick kids in hospitals at Christmastime, nothing else.

If you're uncomfortable with donating to the Child's Play charity, but still want to help, find your local hospital's Child Life program and donate directly to them.
