No Tweets? June 13, 2013 8:03 AM   Subscribe

I've recently noticed that my most recent Tweet is no longer showing-up on my profile page. Checking around, it seems others' profiles are similarly affected. Is Twitter blocking access?

I was just looking at this. Twitter disabled the widget we were using on profile pages. The new widget that they offer doesn't fit in with the way we're showing widgets. It's too wide and includes three tweets. They don't offer a way to customize the look that I've found yet.

So I'm going to disable Twitter widgets on profile pages. I'll take a look today and see if there's any way we can customize the existing widget so that it'll fit in with our widget area on profile pages.

Thanks for the info.
Twitter really seem hell-bent on being dicks, don't they?

They want more control over how tweets are displayed. I think they'd prefer everyone visit twitter.com to consume them.

Understandable, but too bad for us!

As I look at this more I'm pretty sure we won't be able to have Twitter widgets on profiles anymore. Each widget now has a unique ID associated with each unique username—I can't simply swap in a Twitter username to have it work. Sorry about this.

Dear twitter:

This is why we can't have nice things.

Can I piggy-back? Is the LibraryThing widget working? Mine shows three "recent" books which happen to be the first three I added to LibraryThing back in 2005 and those haven't changed as far as I can tell.
posted by Jahaza at 8:17 AM on June 13, 2013

The LibraryThing widget shows books categorized as "Currently Reading". So you might log into LibraryThing and see what you have on that list.
posted by pb (staff) at 8:19 AM on June 13, 2013

Ah... I didn't have any books in currently reading (I don't generally use that feature there). When I add one it shows that book, but without any it shows the three oldest (in date added) books in my library.

I'd say that the real tragedy here is that every minute this isn't working is another minute you all are being deprived of my razor wit and brilliant insights.

But the fact is, I've been slipping in ancient Enochian phrases in here and there designed, when strung together, to open a portal to the dungeon dimensions where I can finally get rid of some of this yard waste that my garbage company refuses to take.

What? Not all my portals have to have an evil purpose do they?

Just the same, it's probably for the best that no one recites them, because the demons are getting pretty pissed about all the pine branches and whirligig seeds I've been sending through.

Jahaza, ah ok. Good to know that's what it falls back to. That's happening on LibraryThing's end.

My LT widget is working (and I highly recommend the Abulafia book to anyone interested in the history of the Mediterranean).

They did the same thing with a website I run a while ago, fucking annoying.

Oh goddammit. I just started getting active on Twitter and I was getting a nice little rush of self-regard whenever I'd see my inane observations framed on my profile page. It was such a nice-looking widget.

I don't even use Twitter anymore but man, what a dickish thing to do. Why? What's the point of doing this?

This is because Twitter switched off API v1 yesterday. A bunch of older Twitter apps are now broken as a result.

Booooooo. Why, Twitter, WHY?

Eh.

I'm already over it.

No problem, I can just e-mail you a photo of whatever record I'm currently listening to and you can tape it to the bottom left of your screen. Problem solved.

Man I just started tweeting again too!
posted by Mister_A at 10:17 AM on June 13, 2013

Why? What's the point of doing this?

They want to control how Tweets look. You can read more about it in Changes coming in Version 1.1 of the Twitter API: "To ensure that Twitter users have a consistent experience wherever they see and interact with Tweets, in v1.1 of the Twitter API we will shift from providing Display Guidelines to Display Requirements..."

I spent a little more time getting to know the new Twitter widget and I think it'll work ok. They're more strict about how tweets are displayed but I think it'll work for profiles. They should be showing up for everyone now.

The "retirement" of the original API also kills all support for RSS syndication of Twitter feeds, and hence any possibility of transferring my dozens of subscriptions into Feedly/Newsblur/whatever. It's like July 1st came early this year!

It works on my profile, but shows a random couple of books with no rhyme or reason.

If you log into LibraryThing and set some books as "Currently Reading" you can control what shows up there.

(Also, the new widget is kinda ... ugly. But not pb's fault!)
posted by jillithd at 12:20 PM on June 13, 2013

Quite honestly, I fine it amazingly admirable how quickly pb can find, analyse and solve the various bugs and beetles that constantly assail this website. But on the other hand, won't this particular fix lead inevitably to the destruction of our society?

Now we know that the US government is trying to hack everything we do, the policy of painless cross-facility interface is just playing into their hands. Right now, Obama is obviously chillin' in the Oval Office, knockin' back some Ovaltine and ogling all our precious data. Do we really want to assist his pan-national violation of our privates?

I say we vote that every tweet carry the hash tag #1quidnunckid and thusly flood the NSA's lidless eyeballs with a symbol of our permanent protest. Only by this distributed denial of sensibleness attack (DDOS) can we fight the power. Also let's secrete our precious mods in Hong Kong or hide them in a cupboard in the Embassy of Ecuador - I'll tell them when it's safe to come out, I promise.

It works on my profile, but shows a random couple of books with no rhyme or reason.

I haven't updated LibraryThing in way too long, but this describes the way I read perfectly, so I guess I'm fine with whatever it displays. Thanks to dancestoblue, my "to be read" pile just overflowed its shelf. The wife looked funny when I walked in with that armload, but what are you gonna do except cook her dinner and let her shrug and sigh. Glad she loves me and all my random books any old way.

Hey guys, how are you doing, anyway? Squirrel!

I just quit coffee, and man, it's getting weird in my brain. Sorry about the twitter outage, i'm having a shortage of pithy 140-character thoughts due to cafienne withdrawl. pb is the best.

Cafienne sounds like a feminine version of caffeine, like comedienne. I like it. I'm awarding it Typo of the Day.

Rhaomi: "The "retirement" of the original API also kills all support for RSS syndication of Twitter feeds, and hence any possibility of transferring my dozens of subscriptions into Feedly/Newsblur/whatever. It's like July 1st came early this year!"

Rhaomi, keep an eye on IFTTT. While Twitter killed off triggers for IFTTT a while ago, maybe someone will find a workaround.

Can I just reiterate that Google Reader is shutting down on my birthday and it's the worst present I've ever gotten?

Aw, it sounds like I'm too late to offer one of those developer pieces of advice about how we* should solve the problem now that we have an opportunity to rebuild the Twitter widget on the profiles. I had a real easy way for you to turn the whole site into a social network we** could monetize.

* "we" in developer-speak usually being the non-Royal we meaning "here's what you should do with your free time".
** That's the Royal "we".

We use MODX for all of our CMS projects and ran into the same issue. This is MODX specific but might offer some insight into customization.

Ah, I was wondering why Reader had stopped updating those.

twitter-rss seems to be filling the gap as a twitter-to-RSS bridge. But as it's third-party who knows how long it'll last?

twitter-rss now seems to be periodically bunging spammy ads instead of tweets into its generated feeds. Ho-hum.
