Happy Moderator's Day! June 13, 2013 5:24 AM   Subscribe

Five years ago I put forth a humble suggestion that June 13th be celebrated each year as Moderator's Day. We've celebrated it more or less enthusiastically over the years, and I just wanted to take this opportunity to specifically thank mathowie, jessamyn, cortex, vacapinta, restless_nomad, taz, LobsterMitten, goodnewsfortheinsane, and pb for their hard work and dedication. Thanks, guys. You can take the rest of the day off. We'll be good, I promise.

If you enjoy a good flameout MeTa, the thread my original suggestion was in sure was a doozy. I re-read it in preparing this post and boy howdy does it get rough in there.

This is a great idea for a thread, and I agree that the moderators of this website truly deserve our sincere thanks for their unwavering professionalism and their endless work.

Unfortunately, that work will, I fear, inevitably lead to the destruction of our society.

Let's be honest: why does MetaFilter exist? MetaFilter exists to filter the "best of the web". Most people think this happens by filtering out particles of web-bestness and displaying them on the frontpage. But in fact, MetaFilter works by filtering from the otherwise cool, pure waters of internet its most horrifying and poisonous pollutants, and trapping them all on a damp barrier of scunge. The terrorsome and hateful particulates I am talking about are - of course! - all of us, the users of MeFi. By captivating assholes like us and making us waste all our time here, the rest of the web is free to go about its business, without any fear of snark-bite, cyber-attack or porn-infection.

In that context, the great work that the mods are doing in promoting sensible, on-topic discussion and a respectful environment for discovery and dialectic can only end in disaster. Because, as anyone familiar with the laws of assholedynamics knows, it is impossible to lower the assholery of a system without a consequent increase in the assholishness of the environment. Thus the endless work of the mods to create a paradise for us is slowly destroying the entire world.

Climate change, 9/11, the less-than-great Season 4 of Community - all these horrors shook the globe since the mods have been doing their wonderful work for us. I say: let's give something back to planet Earth by immediately sacking the mods and voting #1 quidnunc kid. By the way I have a computer program that writes all these predictable and pointless fucking comments for me now, so I can devote my time to studying for the Turing Test. Here's hoping I get a pass! Happy Moderator's Day everyone.

Thank you, Mods! Whether you have on your official mod-hats or are goofing off with the rest of us, you're an asset to the community. But it's clearly the hard and often-thankless work you do to keep it a community that so clearly proves how much we need you.

The consistent quality and vibe of MF over the years - even though both of those things have had somewhat different shapes depending on which year - wouldn't have been possible without your careful consideration, attentiveness, responsiveness, and BRUTAL FASCIST REPRESSION! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

...I mean, diligent decisiveness in support of community well-being and enjoyment.

Seriously, though, I know y'all get a lot of abuse heaped on you and are almost constantly questioned for nearly every move you make. I'm glad you've all stuck around and that each expansion of the ranks simply increases the number of good people trying to keep things cool around here.

Thank you.

Puddling is what happens when I'm bringing the dehumidifier tank up from the basement, and my cat lunges for the door in a desperate attempt to sneak downstairs so she can eat insulation, but instead slams into the tank and careens backwards while water sloshes out all over the place. Mods, you're some wonderful moderators,
So gentle, yet so strong.
The many ways you show you care
Always make us feel like we belong.
You're patient when we're foolish;
You give guidance when we ask;
It seems you can do most anything;
You're the masters of every task.
You're a dependable source of comfort;
You're our cushion when we fall.
You help in times of trouble;
You support us whenever we call.
We love you more than you may know;
You have our total respect.
If I had my choice of moderators,

I will probably be forever unqualified for any job that includes moderation duties, because I have a pretty over-active adrenal response to even minor conflict situations. I've gotten pretty good at mental techniques to suppress my inner rage guy, which has made me a lot happier on the road in particular,* but I'm pretty sure all that training would go out the window if I had to drink from the firehose of rage that is moderating a discussion website. So yeah, consider me pretty impressed with the general tenor of level-headedness that y'all manage.

If you enjoy a good flameout MeTa, the thread my original suggestion was in sure was a doozy.

That is something. Fear of overmoderation is a theme there, before I registered, and I've seen it as far back as 2004. A lot of this probably comes from how people are accustomed to moderation being on other parts of the internet. Even some of my favorite sites have fairly unilateral moderation. The moderation here, like MeTa in the best of times, is a decidedly more a community process. And it's appreciated.
