Moving Day! March 13, 2014 1:53 PM   Subscribe

This Saturday we are planning some downtime of about one hour some time around 10am Pacific. We'll put up a big banner across the top of the site tomorrow to give everyone an additional heads up and post updates to the status blog.

We are moving web hosts and we've conducted most of the move already. The last step will be to take Saturday morning's last few posts and comments and sync them to the new server, and update the DNS to point you at the new box. In testing this has only taken about 20-30min total, but we're budgeting an hour just in case there are any delays. The site should come back up on the new hardware in the new location for everyone later Saturday morning, and we'll squash any bugs we didn't catch in previous testing through the day.

I hear there will be customizable user pages and <img> tags as far as the eye can see once we get to the new box everyone, so don't panic. Just be patient while we shut down the site for a little while, and then everything... will... be... OK...

Hey, I've gone ahead and put together a temporary replacement site with, um, most of the main site functionality implemented, which everyone's welcome to use if the downtime on Saturday gets hard to endure.

Yeah, strangely, the last time we did a major server move, we put up a temp "sorry we'll be back soon" catch-all page for the server but it turned into a nightmare where apache and browsers were caching the page for literally weeks for some people, and you had to do a force-refresh to get the actual new site.

So instead, we're going to just shut the servers down for a few minutes, move the DNS, then bring up the new instance in the new location.

In summary, the future holds many possibilities. Now everyone get under your desks.

GuyZero's comment made me think of this, and it seems like as good a place as any to ask as any, but is there still ColdFusion lurking in the backend of Metafilter, or has that all been supplanted by other languages?

The only reference in the wiki to the engine also mentions GPLing the code in July 2003, so I don't think it is necessarily the most up-to-date.

grandsham, it's not just lurking in the backend. MetaFilter is all ColdFusion all the time. The MetaFilter code hasn't been GPLd. I'm not sure what that was about on the wiki.

Oh, 2003 was a different era for Metafilter. mathowie was running the site by himself, at his own expense, and he was burned out: he casually mentioned the possibility of open sourcing the Metafilter server code in 2003, along with options like "close the site, sell it, or throw an essay contest to give it away." Soon after, Google TextAds were introduced on the site, Metafilter made steps toward being self-sustaining, and mathowie felt optimism about the site again.

Title:
The End [more inside]
Question:
My favorite place on the Interet will be out for an entire hour in the middle of my night in a few day's time. This has caused my anxiety to spike, as well as my preemptive chocolate chip cookie intake. I also have stocked up on beans (and plates), but to no avail. My therapist - well *chuckle* my therapist.

My friends tell me to start a life, and quit whining, but I will make work of it and detach myself from my friends.
Dear mefites I need a reality check here. Can this even be? How do I keep my head above water during this difficult time? What cookies do you recommend? How to I handle the adrenaline rush when [favorite site] goes online again? And will it be safe to eat after all that time?

The real question here is: who can we trust as supreme ruler of the vacuum where MetaFilter doesn't exist for about one hour some time around 10am Pacific Time on Saturday? I say we hold a vote for overlordship of that particular empty space. I saw The Neverending Story as a young child, and I firmly believe that when "the nothing is coming" you need a strong leader in charge - you can't just pin your hopes on an introverted little kid with a weird thing for Luck Dragons. Also "Bastian" isn't even a REAL NAME. So vote #1 "the quidnunc kid" for chief Gmork.

You get your first look at this "six foot turkey" as you enter a clearing. He moves like a bird, lightly, bobbing his head. And you keep still because you think that maybe his visual acuity is based on movement in the flag queue– he'll lose you if you don't move on. But no, not Velocimoderator. You stare at him, and he just stares right back. And that's when the banhammer comes. Not from the front, but from the side, from the other two mods you didn't even know were there. Because Velocimoderator's a pack hunter, you see, he uses coordinated deletion reasons and he is out in force today.

Unfortunately, the actual "moderaptor" or "Moderate Raptor" (Velociraptor moderatos) was only about the size of a small turkey. The Vermont Raptor (also known as the "Deinomoderus" (Deinomoderus vermontensis) was much larger and apparently had a terrible banhammer on each hide leg. You have to do a little more research than just watching Jurassic Weblog again (or worse, simply listening to the synopsis on the podcast We Have Such Blogs to Read to You)....

As the MeFites wait, all expressing certainty or uncertainty in their own peculiar ways, the fact remains -- they have put their faith in the predictable order of the site, the progression of FFPs and questions and MeTas, followed by comments helpful and combative, drive-by one-liners and walls of text, punctuated by mod interventions and advice, but they have refused to accept the glaring fact that it is all merely invisible electrons whirling under the auspices of soulless machines, and, in the end, MetaFilter is only a thin veneer stretched over the boundless chaos below. Whatever meaning MeFites have attached to this artifact of civilization, soon they must accept the proof that Nature and Chaos underlie all, and the server migration is merely a dress rehearsal for the greater void of death.
