Moving Day!
This Saturday we are planning some downtime of about one hour some time around 10am Pacific. We'll put up a big banner across the top of the site tomorrow to give everyone an additional heads up and post updates to the status blog. [more inside]
Errors loading www.metafilter.com in the latest Google Chrome on OS X?
This is pretty strange and we've gotten 3-4 reports of members not being able to load anything on www.metafilter.com (ask, metatalk, everything else works) in just Google Chrome's latest version (Firefox/Safari work fine), on OSX. Anyone have any ideas what could be going on? [more inside]
DNS Trouble
Our DNS provider is having some problems right now so MetaFilter sites might be up and down for a bit. It seems to be hitting our static server hard, so you might get the sites loading without stylesheets or images until either we or they can work around this. Sorry about the hassle. [more inside]
COICA still alive
The "Combating Online Infringement and
Counterfeits Act" (COICA) is back on the Judiciary Committee's schedule. [more inside]
OpenDNS not properly resolving ask.mefi?
It's late and maybe I'm not thinking this one through enough but all of a sudden ask.metafilter.com redirects an ip that seems to be owned by opendns hosting a page that looks an awful lot like the google homepage:
PING metafilter.com (174.132.172.58): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 174.132.172.58: icmp_seq=0 ttl=111 time=81.331 ms

64 bytes from 208.69.36.231: icmp_seq=0 ttl=54 time=71.790 ms
Is this just me going crazy behind my gritty contacts or has anyone else had this problem tonight?

It's that new server smell everyone loves so much
The new server: you're soaking in it! We're on the new boxes now, post any bugs or weirdness you find here and we'll work on it as fast as we can.
Movin' on up...
Preparations are in order for the big move. [more inside]
Getting it from the horse's mouth.
This is why I still read MetaFilter.
MetaFilter DNS records goofy?
Are the metafilter.com DNS records configured properly? I'm having to do a DNS lookup of all mefi sites like once a minute, as if the expiration counters in the records are set way off. Even if you were planning a server move, that's way too tight. Seconds vs minutes error?

The scourge that is WebMarshal
Our employer gives us an allocated amount of personal browsing time every day, which is filtered by WebMarshall. Metafilter is normally my prefered surfing choice, but WM must have picked up an excessive number of references to s-ex, pr0n, and other filth on the blue, (and also the Human Relations category of AskMefi kicks up the "Blocked: Pr0nography" page as well.
Normally I'd just http://ip.address/ to work around that, but with metafilter that just redirects back to www.metafilter.com
Lynx via telnet/ssh is painful at best, especially for image heavy links.
Any functional suggestions? (asking the sysadmin to unblock a site flagged as pr0n is just tempting fate).
DNS/domain work arounds?
I'm prepared for all the "get back to work!" comments on this post too...
It seems that even mild references to human anatomy send WebMarshal into a furious rampage blocking even some news sites. :-(
DNS weirdness.
Metafilter's DNS is broken. (More inside.)
DNS wildcard and google crawler
It's possible that DNS wildcards on metafilter.com are causing problems for the Google crawler. I suggest deleting the redundant DNS entries, and using a 301 redirect for http://metafilter.com/ to go to http://www.metafilter.com/
DNS Issues?
It looks like your DNS server is failing. Metafilter is hosted by eod.com, and they aren't answering for anything in metafilter.com. I'm trying to get this posted quickly before my caches expire... I already can't reach ask.metafilter.com
Eod has only one IP address for their 'two' nameservers, 72.36.180.243. It pings, but doesn't answer name service requests.
You might want to consider hosting your domain with someone with enough money to put two servers on the net. :(

"Net Timeout" Error Loading Mefi in Firefox -- IE Fine
I can't load metafilter in Firefox. Internet Explorer loads it fine. Non-tabbed browsing is killing me. Help! (more inside)
metafilter.com Domain Name not Resolving
The metafilter.com domain name seems to be dying. It resolves if I access the internet one way, but not if I use my other connection. Here's proof it's not just me.
New webserver at 70.86.84.162
The new webserver is up and ready to go. It's at 70.86.84.162 and I'd like a few folks to test it out before moving the DNS over. To hit this server instead of the current one, for now you need to edit your hosts file, adding www.metafilter.com, metatalk.metafilter, and ask.metafilter.com mappings to the new IP. It runs off the same exact database server which is separate, so test comments will be seen on both the new web server and the old one. So far in testing the new server is going smoking fast.
Is the DNS for metafilter.com down?
Is the DNS for metafilter.com down? I can't reach ns1.turlyming.com or ns2.turlyming.com. This might not be causing problems for everyone yet as DNS lookups get cached on local nameservers, but still needs fixing quickly.
touchstevesnuts.metafilter.com?
I used the Google Search and it returned all these weird metafilter variants instead of the post I was looking for. bukake.metafilter.com? touchstevesnuts.metafilter.com?
Why does talespin.net have the same DNS as MetaFilter?
talespin.net = MetaFilter? Weird.
How many subdomains are there?
Sat bored at my compressor, tapped in my Mefi username to Google, as you do, and discovered a host of mefi sub-domains!
bushfilter.metafilter.com,
where.the.fuck.is.metafilter.com,
www.iamnotaddictedto.metafilter.com,
www.betterthanapokeintheeyewithasharpstick.metafilter.com,
a-list.metafilter.com,
cheesemakesmynipplessing.metafilter.com,
wilwheatonseemslikeanokguytome.metafilter.com,
kottke-is-my-hero.metafilter.com,
2nd.birthday.for.metafilter.com,
plushcthulhu.metafilter.com,
mattisaciaagent.metafilter.com,
furbo.metafilter.com,
mobile.metafilter.com.
Now, my [niaive?] questions are:
- How many subdomains are there?
- How do my comments get assigned?
- I only post to Metafilter.com & metatalk.metafilter.com, so how did google find them & rank them?
- Looking at some of those site names, I have to ask: Does quonsar actually have admin rights here now?

#mefi has moved!
#mefi has moved!
To avoid prosecution For various reasons, #mefi has been forced to relocate moved to a new server. The DNS will propagate the domain name shortly but, if you are connecting using the IP address, you need to change it to 207.44.144.7
DAYS without metafilter; you guys?
This is the first time since the New Year that metafilter.com has actually resolved for me. At first I thought it was something to do with where I'm connecting, but neither the site that hosts my email (energis2) or demon or my ISP could resolve it either. When I finally get here I find tonnes of postings - so what happened? Did anyone else experience it?
turlyming drive failure
turlyming.com (metafilter.com's primary mx, primary/secondary ns, and #mefi host) suffered a drive failure yesterday. while matt has his bases covered, you may still experience minor delays in ns lookups for metafilter.com addresses and of course, the irc channel is unavailable until i can rebuild the box.
DNS issues
MeFi DNS woes?
Is MetaFilter/Turlyming DNS down? I only seem to be able to reach MeFi because Squid cached the address. NS1 and NS2.turlyming.com aren't answering queries. Anyone?
My br0wz0r is 0wnz0r3d
My br0wz0r is 0wnz0r3d. I can access Metafilter & Metatalk but nothing else. No yahoo, no google, etc. etc. etc., none of the links.

Blogger is experiencing DNS problems at the moment
I didn't think this was important enough to post on the main MeFi page, but thought I'd pass it along here...
According to evhead.com, Blogger is experiencing DNS problems at the moment. If you just can't live without it, try going to http://64.41.146.214/.

DNS issues related to server switch
There were DNS issues today, there might be more soon, as I switch to new servers. Beware.
