We lose a mod, but gain more comments! May 29, 2014 10:32 AM   Subscribe

Today is Jessamyn's last day as a mod.

I know we always haven't been on the same side of almost any given issue, but I have sincerely appreciated you here.

I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors...including the loads and loads of comments you'll be posting on here.

I'm not really big on metatalk love threads. But it would be a goodgoddamn shame if Jessamyn didn't get this thread to let her know that we all consider her departure to be a loss to the community.

Take care and thanks for being a nice person.

I'm here to thank Jessamyn for her help and guidance with the bad things that happened to my Russian friends. That was tremendous, thanks. Hard to believe that was already four years and eight days ago.

I'm also here to thank Jessamyn for being one of my (numerous) internet role models. By that, I mean that I watched a number of really interesting people with interesting ideas consistently write and share and speak, long-form, about those ideas and act in compelling ways. I saw those people build lives and careers out of their interests and I saw the online world/discourse change in a positive way out of what they were doing. When I was starting out, those people were my (perhaps unintentional) examples of ways to have an awesome life that was otherwise impossible to imagine from the isolated and alienating place that I came from.

After years of work, I feel that I have a meaningful life engaged with meaningful problems in part because I had good examples.

Thanks.

Before I joined Metafilter, I posted one answer to AskMe from my husband's account; there was some question like "why do the lights keep going off in my house when there's a storm?" or "what's up with the power?" or something and I answered "Have you considered ghosts? It's probably ghosts."

To my utter shock, this was deleted and I spent a while being like "Jessamyn has no sense of humor blah blah I am so funny WTF I am the greatest SILENCED ALL MY LIFE &c &c." (I was also like twenty-two at the time so maybe cut me some slack?). Eventually I realized what an AMAZING resource AskMe is and how it would not be nearly so helpful or amazing without people like Jessamyn in general and Jessamyn herself in particular setting the tone. There would be a bunch of people like me assuming our HILARIOUS answers deserved to be heard and just a lot less signal and a lot more noise.

There are so many awesome, awesome things Jessamyn has done (including not saying "WTF shut up" when I email her comments instead of posting them in threads), and the legacy of AskMe as a really helpful and amazing community resources is, I hope, an appropriate tribute and I hope Jessamyn feels super proud and knows that we are all very, very grateful.

And now I know she does have a sense of humor, just also a sense of boundaries, which I really appreciate.

I'm pretty damn sure that the calm and even jessamyn we see as a mod is the real jessamyn. But I so want for her last mod post or her first non-mod post to be a total "I've been holding this in for 10 years" freakout of either foul mouthed obscenity or loathsome bigotry, just for the sheer stuntiness of it. But she won't, and that's a lot of the reason why we will miss her being a mod so much.

I was once taking on all comers in a completely pointless Metatalk thread, and I got a message from jessamyn that was equal parts "knock it off!" and "things are getting nasty, are you okay?"

It was the only message I've ever gotten from her, and I still really appreciate both parts of that message as an exemplar of how she has defined moderation here, that it is about making the community the best it can be and that all of us are the community, even when we're being jerks.

Dear Hive Mind: a person I admire greatly is stepping down from her position in a community where we are both active. I have been racking my brains for a week to figure out how to properly express my respect, gratitude, and fondness for her. [More inside]

I have seen her handle difficult situations with grace, clarity and aplomb. I have also gone to a strip club with her, and she (and many other members of our community) were there for me when I really needed support. I haz a sad, Hive Mind, and I just want to know: how do I cope? And should I eat the shrimp salad that's been sitting out on my counter since last night?

One of the nicer aspects of mathowie's "promote from within" policy has been that the people whom many of us probably already respected and liked were given the keys to the kingdom -- and then proved their value by being kind, helpful, patient (ye gods, y'all are PATIENT) and refusing to abuse their newfound powers even in the face of strong temptation. ;)

I am currently phasing out of my place of employment and heading on to newer better things, and I have to say, leaving a place in a controlled exit that's actually exuberant and hopeful and wistful and genuine instead of a slow seething stew of resentment and passive aggression looks like a pretty sweet deal from this vantage point.

Kudos to all the MeFi staff for making this such an obviously awesome place to work and be. Just the fact that this can happen is a testament to how amazing this place is.

What boggles my mind is how anyone in their right mind could perceive what he said as a threat. I feel I treated LobsterMitten and GoodNewsFortheInsane a bit shabbily. I've not interacted with them much, I tend to read more than post and usernames don't usually stick unless I've had a particular interaction in person or online.

Since hearing the news of cut backs I've started to look out for their names and read more of their decrees. I can see what a loss it will to not have them around either. Not just beloved Jessamyn.

So, in short, everyone here has brought something special and losing your modliness will be felt by all. What I love is the genuine regret your boss shows about losing you. It means he realises how great you are too. And that's not as common in bosses as it should be.

So...travel well all three of you and please be in our lives here as contributors forever, if that's what you'd like. Because I think that's what we'd all like, possums. Xx

With one simple email, Jessamyn guided me into becoming a more thoughtful Metafilter and Internet citizen.

Years ago, I had responded to a question and started getting fighty with another member. She sent me a quick email saying she understood where I was coming from, but noticed that my posts had a tendency to attack and then become apologetic.

As self-aware as I wanted to think I was, I truly had no idea that was how I was behaving.

But it is how I was behaving.

And she called me out on it, in a thoughtful, respectful and intelligent way.

When people say that Metafilter is a special community, I know they're right. We are smart. We are kind. We are connected. And for me, it's because years ago, Jessamyn went out of her way to treat me with kindness while also saying that frankly, I was acting like a dick. She genuinely helped me change how I interact with people in all areas of my life, and helped me feel like part of the Metafilter family.

Thank you, Jessamyn.

Do the departing mods get a day of grace when they first appear as normal users? I think they've more than earned a 24-hour window for unlimited snarking, odd derails, edit window abuse, replying @people, and all that fun stuff.

You know, I was thinking exactly that - either that or the opposite - for the first day everything they post is deleted with a stern but vague warning in square brackets ([Don't do this, please], [You need to not do this], [We can be better than this, and if you can't be, we will help], [Just... no]).

how about, Mod Emeritus!

I also wanted to suggest "emeritus" as maybe being snazzier than "retired."

And that way we could argue about whether everyone is "emeritus" or we should make the distinction between a "mod emeritus" and a "mod emerita" or whether we should let the mod in question determine how they want to be emerited.

Jessamyn, have you (specifically) ever banned me?

Twice! Just little bans though, really.....

I'm not sure I've said enough good things about gnfti and LobsterMitten here. It may not be well-known but gnfti besides being a terrific musician, affable mod, and all around mensch, lives in the Netherlands from which he sent me a delightful bag of licorice, stroopwaffels and a little magnetic pin that says "Staff" My return package to him is woefully late. He is, I think, the most conscientious of all of us.

LobsterMitten is the only mod I have never actually seen (r_n has met her, I know she is real) and that's weird because she's the one who lives closest to me and is, I believe, the closest to me demographically (age, gender, education, number of living parents). She took to the FAQ like a duck to water and has made a lot of the user-facing verbiage clearer and more concise and probably friendlier.

When I was at the local public library this week, the librarian asked me "But what about LobsterMitten?" and I was completely freaked out that maybe she'd been following me online but no, she had just read my note on Facebook and thought the username was hilarious and wanted to make a joke about it. This is a librarian not known for jokes and now I have one with her and this makes me happy.

I went out for ice cream last night with some local friends & planning to work on my MeFi Mix today and read this little stack of postcards and mail I've gotten from people. Tomorrow I'm heading to Board Game Night in MA (if anyone else is in that area, come on by) and I may briefly Facetime in to a London meetup earlier in the day. My inbox was weirdly quiet this morning but I think it's a thing I can get used to. Thanks again everyone, this is super sweet.

I've been thinking about that kung fu a lot lately actually as when I was explaining to non-Mefites what mods actually do, it was suggested that I'd be good at it. I argued vehemently that I would not. They argued why not; I know what does and doesn't derail a conversation. I argued that I don't the temperament or patience or the delicate touch.

I also know what it looks like when a guy has a good hair cut. That doesn't mean I can cut my own hair.

Totally disagree with this MeTa post - which is, in my opinion, nothing but a deathly dagger plunged deep into the hitherto death-and-dagger-free midriff of MetaFilter.

I draw your attention to the fact that this thread began on 29 May, and states: Today is Jessamyn's last day as a mod. But is that not completely inconsistent with Matt "ironclad" Haughey's promise to us all that the mod-austerity package would be [s]tarting June 1st - ?

In other words: have we not been short-changed of TWO whole jessamyn-days, not to mention 48 gnfti-hours and 2,880 LobsterMinutes? This is just another example of the horrifying effects of "mathowienomics" on our market-place of ideas.

On that basis, I demand that MetaFilter compensate us all for the precise quantities of moderation excellence we have been denied. Vote #1 quidnunc kid as Chief Auditor of MetaFilter, and I will immediately conduct a thorough study into just how many additional cortex-weeks we should receive in just compensation for this outrage. I will also seek to recover late payment interest at the rate of five taz-points above the restless_nomad base rate. My fees are only 500 vacapintas per day plus 20% pb-tax, which I think you'll agree is very reasonable in the circumstances.

She will probably never see this, but I feel like the site could use as many shmoopy/happy vibes as possible, especially now.

I was really sad to hear that Mefi was having issues-there was an instant dread, like hearing someone you know is sick. (No, this is not a hyperbole). Then when I saw that Jessamyn was stepping down, I teared right the fuck up. I've been lurking on this site since I was 15 ish. I grew up in a conservative town, and all the grown-ups that have ever been in my life weren't really adults. I had next to no guidance on how to be anything other than what you'd assume you'd get if you let a 14 year old parent themselves.

The human relations section of AskMe taught me more about proper boundaries, relationships, conflict resolution, dealing with depression, and just in-general adultitude than any live human in my life.

I know it was hard on the Mods, but the long, fighty, sensitive posts about feminism and politics and touchy subjects shaped me to be who I am. If it wasn't for this place, I'd probably still be completely in the dark about a lot of things-trans issues, the prison/industrial complex, race, etc. It's been immeasurably valuable to hear the sides of so many people who otherwise I would not have encountered, growing up where I did.

I was, and am, sad that Jessamyn is stepping down. I'm glad that she will still be active on the site. She's tops on the long list of users that I thank silently for being themselves.

Forgiven! Thank you.

And an interesting story, now that we are at the bottom of this long thread. I've been volunteering at the Archive for a year now, only been made official just recently. Most of what I do is support and planning. Every so often the site, because a lot of it is an open wiki, gets someone who wants to mess around with it. Add porn shots instead of book covers, fuck with someone's author page, or generally add a zillion books that don't exist. There are back-end tools to shut this down and we (I) use them.

One user who was totally internet-anonymous to us--we had a gmail address but nothing else but an IP--decided he was sort of unhappy being denied access to this fertile playground and decided to take it up with me personally. He sent crappy and generally more and more aggrieved email to the contact form and eventually tracked down who I was personally and sent personal email that could be construed as death threats to me. Now, I did not think the guy (who was somewhere in Washington state) was going to come and find me because I had stopped him from vandalizing this community resource, but it was still pretty unsettling. So I reported it to the Internet Archive people and said I was done responding to this guy.

And they sprung into action. They took it seriously, they had a meeting, they banned the user, they blocked his IP, they totally supported my going no-contact with the guy and they sent him a "Do not contact Jessamyn again in any way or we will actually take legal action against you, this is totally unacceptable" email that was polite but totally firm and clear what the issue was and what needed to happen. In all my time in various kinds of work online and off, I have never felt so completely supported and felt like a nasty issue like this got so totally and completely handled as I did then. And this was for me, still at that time a volunteer, over an email that would have been pretty easy to sweep under the rug as "Eh it's just some angry internet dude, ignore him and he will probably go away." I was impressed and it takes a lot to impress me.

So, like a lot of things, the future is pretty uncertain but I hope a lot of people have seen me around these past few weeks and are more confident that I am, in fact, not really going anywhere. But I think I am in good hands at my new job.

I had been a bit worried that it was like the end of the yoga retreat glow when you all exchange emails and promise to stick together and five months later you see one of them in line at Krispy Kreme at 11pm and stare intently into your phone.
