Forthcoming Cult Film Club films July 9, 2014 11:09 AM   Subscribe

The next one is The Big Lebowski, which I will post Monday June 14. It's widely available to watch online, or you can simply replay the whole film in your mind, as can everybody in our generation. And then, alternating between old and new:

June 21: The Warriors
June 28: Road House
August 4: Eraserhead
August 11: The Room
August 18: Pink Flamingos
August 25: Zoolander

See you Monday!

For "June" read "July" in every instance, right?

No, I will expect you to go back in time and good lord how did I get that wrong?

Turturro has apparently been pitching a Jesus movie to the Coens. Maybe now that Fargo was a success, we can have a tv show in which Jesus and Liam fight crime.

Excellent selections -- they're really going to tie this summer together.

So are those due dates and we discuss them on those dates, or is it a "watch and chat simultaneously live" thing?
posted by Celsius1414 at 1:38 PM on July 9, 2014

Due dates, and there will be a pop quiz.

There actually should be a pop quiz.

I'll just be over here reciting the entire Eraserhead script.

That's cool, on July 5 my grandmother sent me an email titled "6/3/14 visit." So...clearly you're not the only one unstuck in time.

I'm really excited about this, but is Roadhouse really a cult film? In my mind it is the most popular movie of all time, across all demographics. Anyway, cult film or not I relish the chance to watch it...over and over and over again.

YES PINK FLAMINGOS!
That is literally the worst movie ever made. It was so bad, everybody should see it to know exactly what bad is. John Waters is nasty. Those people are nasty. I believe you actually are seeing what they say you are seeing. Nasty! All of it! You know what it-is!

Oh yes, it is! Between the excellent cast and the plot that leaves no buddy/action/homoerotic/revenge cliche left unexamined, Roadhouse occupies its rightful place in the Pantheon of really bad movies that people love. It's an Addam's Family deliberate train-wreck of a film that magically manages to keep itself on track.

Roadhouse is a bad, bad movie. But because the entire mess is delivered with such a bald-faced innocent tone, people like us just love it so.

I honestly never really thought of it as a mess. Granted I haven't seen it in a while, but I thought it was just a glorious film about a bouncer who has great hair and kicks people's asses. Oh...

I know hindsight is 20/20 and all that, but it would've been awesome to throw something like "Mask" in as well to get the Sam Elliott trifecta.
posted by Ufez Jones at 6:45 AM on July 10, 2014

Gosh, I don't know that Mask is a cult film, but I could easily have gone with Frogs or Tombstone. I will keep them in mind for later.

I am available by phone if you need someone to yell "LOOK AT MY KNEES" because that is inexplicably my favorite line

YES PINK FLAMINGOS!

I haven't seen it, but having just read the entry on Wikipedia, I am intrigued by the description of the Surfing Bird performance.

Tombstone isn't cult. Val Kilmer rocking it as the Doc, "I'm your Huckleberry..." Kurt Russell totally over acting as angry Wyatt Earp, and also, the unspoken director! Then again, if Lebowski is cult anymore, I reckon Tombstone is. Great cast in it, none the less!

These are GREAT choices! I'm excited for this film club.

Haha, yes. I watched it at the tender age of 15 with my uncle, who has pretty much made it his personal mission that I be steeped in gay culture since the day I was born. I probably don't need to watch it ever again (I'll watch it again).

shakespeherian: "I'll just be over here reciting the entire Eraserhead script."

It doesn't count unless you're actually humming (throat-singing?) the background industrial drone.
