FanFare talk page? July 12, 2014 5:42 PM Subscribe
Does FanFare need its own talk page, like Music? It seems like there have been enough Fanfare planning posts here lately to make a new space for them, and to keep MetaTalk more MetaFilter related.
It's not like MetaTalk is so busy that posts are being pushed off the front page, but I thought I'd see what everyone else thinks anyway.

Awesome, LM. I think this is a capital idea.

I don't understand why HBO bought the rights to the books and wants to change everything now.

Thanks, that's how you get ants. I've been noticing this, too, but I couldn't think of how to be constructive about it.

Perversely, Metatalk has become my favourite part of this website. I've been seething of late as my attempts to find my usual fix of drama and tantrums gets cluttered up with people planning their next bout of Dr. Who or torture porn consumption.
Looking forward to their eventual banishment to the wilderness.

Since I assume a lot of Fanfare users will see this, I just wanted to shamelessly plug my dark user style for Fanfare again, probably for the last time in MeTa proper. You can get it here. There's another one by someone else (which I've never used) here if you don't like mine.

It's kind of interesting that FanFare turns out to have as much value for corraling smart people to rewatch and discuss older stuff as it does as an outlet for discussing the latest movies and shows.

Why is that interesting? I mean, how is it different from what you expected?

McDermott sort of nails it - perhaps a subsite where we can discuss metatalk might be the best all round solution.

Funny, my FanFare has a professional white background, just like the rest of the site.

because it meant there wasn't a new Game of Thrones FPP every week during the series, but anything that separates it all off and means I don't have to look at it is a good thing.
I'm fairly sure there will continue to be GoT posts on the front page from time to time regardless of the existence of FanFare. I would say likely at the same rate we've ever seen them. Fanfare just deals with a particular episode right after it airs.

I agree - as someone who finds even the mere mention of these torture-porn films upsetting
Please note that the horror club has so far featured a single film that could be called "torture porn," and that's only if you paint with a broad brush and eschew nuance. Even in that case, the description of the film did not in any way include graphic content, and warned sensitive folks away. So it's not like there has been an eruption of blood and guts or descriptions of violence on the MeTa front page.
I'm not going to try to talk anyone out of an aversion to horror. I just sort of rankle at the idea that we're bringing unseemly things into a shared space. We are absolutely keeping the horror stuff in the prescribed spaces. And we're a pretty diverse group of nice people watching films in a variety of subgenres in a variety of languages from a variety of eras. So far, we've had a snarky meta horror comedy, two ghost stories (one of which featured zero violence and was resolutely feminist), a conceptual piece based on a novel and stage play, and a critically acclaimed French film that yes, contains a good deal of graphic violence (though we went out of our way to warn people about that).
TL;DR: no one's asking anyone to like horror movies. But it'd be cool not to be treated like a turd in the punch bowl.

The horror club is not a bunch of creeps discussing torture on the front page, we're scary movie fans watching and having intelligent conversations about a bunch of stuff and convening in MeTa to discuss what/when we're watching.
It's entirely understandable to want the tv/film watching stuff moved elsewhere, as that's not what MeTa is for. I feel the same way.

Is it ok for me to add a tiny pony request to this thread... a my little pony if you please?
Anyway, if professional white background is turned on, can the rewatch and first watch icons be more subtle? Maybe just black text on a white background for example?
