The annual Metafilter Holiday Cookie Swap: signups have begun!

Welcome to the 2014 Metafilter Cookie Swap! This year we will follow a similar process as the past few years, and all of us will eat our fill of delicious baked goods. Here we go!

To sign up, please send an email containing the following information to meficookieswap@gmail.com by Wednesday, November 19th:

1) Metafilter handle
2) Mailing address
3) Do you have any allergies?
4) Are you ok with booze in your baked goods?

I will arrange bakers into geographically-based swap groups of ~4 and then send the assignments out to everyone. You will then be tasked with sending 6 cookies to each of your group's MetaBakers. While this means you are on the hook for 18 cookies, you should probably do the sensible thing and bake enough extra to feed members of your household and yourself.

To make sure swap groups send out and receive cookies before holiday travel ruins everything, the mailing deadline for this year's swap is Friday, December 5th.

Let the baking begin!

Oh! This is so exciting! I'm one of those "yes to cooking no to baking" type people, but in the past year I've made batches of cookies to much surprise and deliciousness. What better way to celebrate the merriment of the season than with MeFites?! I'm SO in.

IN.

And yes, last year at least non-cookies were acceptable. That is to say, I think I did little loaves of gingerbread and caramels and I don't think I had complaints.

So sad about this - we're currently on a no-sugar diet, and I think I'm skipping cookies this year. but the cookie swap last year was so fun! Everyone eat some cookies for me!

Would someone who doesn't eat chocolate be welcome in the cookie swap?

FWIW, if there was a request for a non-chocolate group in my area I'd be totally fine with it. This year I don't think I'll be making cookies with chocolate, and last year I got some amazing dulce de leche cookies that had no chocolate.

I would be in but I think I'd have to limit myself to Canadian MeFites as the shipping deadlines to the US are super tight up here.
posted by Kitteh at 10:40 AM on November 12, 2014

20 people so far! Keep those signups coming, everyone.

If enough people specify "no chocolate" or "no fruit" (that was a popular option last year), I can definitely arrange swap groups along those lines.

While this is technically a cookie swap, delicious bars or fudge or candy of a festive nature will also be permitted. Variety is the spice of Metafilter Cookie Swap, etc.

No, no, no. They are not the same cause they aren't made with love and Metafilter goodness.

I am so stoked for this.

The sugar cookie was first introduced to America by German settlers in the little town of Nazareth, Pennsylvania (my home town) in the mid-1700s, so whoever gets me is getting really bawse sugar cookies.

No, no, no. They are not the same cause they aren't made with love and Metafilter goodness.

Yeah, seriously. I paid $5 for the love and Metafilter goodness, now I want to pay for cookies!

I would seriously think about contributing, but I really only make one kind of cookie (no-bakes) and they are chocolate and peanut butter and they have a short shelf-life so they kill too many people, arrive stale, and some people don't like chocolate (I didn't believe this at first either!). I also make krumkake cookie, but these are so incredibly labor intensive and difficult (and often don't turn out) that I seldom feel brave enough to try. They also don't ship well.

Quandaries!

Re: allergies - the form asks for them, so I think if your group has a peanut-free person (or other allergy of common baking ingredients), then you'll be informed and be able to bake accordingly and/or be able to contact the person in question to determine how severe the allergy is!

(For example, casa del Frito y Techno y Typechip have 1/3rd of a cinnamon allergy, but since only 1 of us is allergic, cinnamon is noted on the form but we'll happily accept baked goods with cinnamon and I and babby Typechip will devour them, and Techno can look upon us sadly)

FritoKAL has it—I'll note all allergies within a group when I send the assignments, and I'll try to put similar allergies together (get ready for fun, No Mango No Onion No Cinnamon No Citrus group!).

CathyG, 6 is the suggested number per swapper, but it will be looked upon as a holiday bonus if you happen to send a bunch of additional cookies :)

I have received several compliments on my chocolate chip recipe and it is the one from the bcak of the Ghiradelli chip bags with slight adaptations. It is only coincidentally the one from that bag - I use the recipe from the first edition of Best Recipes. So the back of the bag recipe is good enough for the Cooks Illustrated folks.

Mailing advice from last year:

It works very well to wrap cookies in one long sheet of clingfilm (wrap one end-over-end a few times, place the next one a few inches further up the line, wrap that one the same way, etc.) and then wrap that whole stack in aluminum foil. It's probably a wasteful practice, but it gets everything wrapped up securely enough to ship. Tubes are great for cookie-shaped items you've managed to stack, as is crumpled-up parchment paper in a Tupperware container to keep things from floating around and becoming crumbs. I like to shove a hunk of bread in with the cookies to keep them fresh, but that may be more superstition than science. Then your recipients also get a bonus chunk of bread!
posted by ausdemfenster at 9:25 AM on November 18, 2014 [3 favorites]

chococat: I have successfully mailed extremely fragile cookies by layering them with a lot of wax paper within cookie tins, then putting the tins in shipping boxes with some bubble wrap. No breakage.

Craft stores like Michael's typically have inexpensive cookie tins. They also have "treat" boxes which might be less expensive to ship than tins. I think it's the layering with the wax paper and the bubble wrap within the shipping box that does the trick.

I would super duper extra LOVE to do this.....but I'm also a super duper extra annoying Vegan/GF person.

If there are enough similarly annoying folks to make a Vegan/GF cookie swap group, I'd be absolutely tickled pink to bake some tasty-vegan/GF-but-loaded-with-deliciousness-and-in-no-way-even-remotely-healthy cookies for my fellow dietary troublemakers!

If not, I'll cheer the rest of you on from the sidelines! Go cookies! Go bakers! Go devourers! Yay!
Or, if people don't mind receiving vegan/gf items, I will happily take part and have Mr. Dorinda (who will eat ANYTHING) devour the sweets that we receive?
posted by Dorinda at 6:57 AM on November 19, 2014

I wouldn't mind receiving tasty vegan/GF cookies! Especially if there's someone else in your household who won't mind receiving cookies with butter and wheat, since I think my chosen recipe is going to have those things.

Everyone who wrote in to sign up should now have a confirmation! If you didn't receive one, kindly MeMail me and we'll sort it out.

We managed a GF/vegan swap group last year, so if anyone would like to update their entry to note that they'd be happy to be in this swap group, get at me!

We are 80 entries strong right now, but if any additional Aussies, Canadians, or Kiwis would like to sign up, that would be a huge help. Tell your friends!

posted by ThatCanadianGirl at 8:19 AM on November 25, 2014

I haven't seen my assignment yet either (but I did get my confirmation email), and I'm US, so that means either I'm swapping with you Canadians or that all assignments didn't go out yet.
posted by Secretariat at 9:13 AM on November 26, 2014

Haven't received mine yet either; I'm hoping to get it soon as I was planning on baking on Friday and shipping either Friday or Saturday.

I'll let others engage in the mad rush; the only shopping I do on Black Friday is at the grocery, which isn't bad. (Although two years ago I waited until mid-afternoon on Black Friday to do my grocery shopping, and they were out of pecans! Not just their everyday supply of pecans, either, but a big display-thing in the produce section with a sign for pecans, completely barren when I got there. Had I been asked to think of things that stores sell out of on Black Friday, "pecans" would not have been one of them, but now I know better.)

Nice to see I'm not the only person who used an inside-out LCBO bag as packaging.

Hey group that I am in, cookies went out yesterday, and should arrive throughout the week.

Just nommed on Parasite Unseen's delicious cookies, which taste like Snickerdoodle shortbread. The best of both worlds! The timing has been perfect so far; if the last batch of cookies didn't arrive until next week I'd be fine with that.

drlith: I am actually kind of indifferent about baking, but I'm certainly able to do a tiny bit of it in order to get non-virtual cookies from the Internet.

Indifferent or not, these cookies are delicious! Texture's really nice too. Merry Quonscookiemas.

I know that two of my batches of goodies arrived, but the ones I sent to Montreal I don't know about. Did you get my goodies, Montreal Mefite?
Also, Vancouver Mefite, your sweets are "in transit" somewhere in the Greater Vancouver area. Soon! Soon!

This thread totally got edited to stay open. Yay!

I brought the popcorn cookies and some of the mint chocolate ones and a few of the little thin sugar-maybe-peanut-butter and the chocolate drops to bar trivia last night and shared them all around and they were seriously enjoyed.

It is not simply a FACT that cookies baked by the Internet are superior. it is a law of nature. My cookies from diablevert, casa jpdoane, and maryrussell are fantastic. Even the boxes in which the cookies were were great - drawings!

2014 holiday season: greatly improved. Thanks again to ausdemfenster for putting the event together this year.

My cookies finally went out on Friday. I had to stall because I knew my niece was coming to visit and she would get such a kick out of a mega-baking project. We had so much fun. So much butter!

Secretariat and Weeping_angel, your cookies/blondies were fantastic! I hope you receive mine soon.

More Christmas treats from the Internet! Frothy sponge toffee with chocolate, and wonderful fluffy pineapple coconut igloos (at least that's what they made me think of!) My family is loving all these random internet surprise packages. Thank you Freyja!

I received large and delicious cookies from funkiwan over the weekend! We have eaten them all. But before I ate the last one, I took a picture to document their size.

More Internet cookies in the mail! This time from my "extra" swap partner, just_ducky. Pretty and perfectly preserved through the post, chocolatey snowflakes of deliciousness to end all my internet mail for 2014. See you all back here next year!

Funiwan, secretariat, weeping_angel....I had no idea I could eat so many cookies. Seriously. I couldnt have made it through this last week without you.

I can vouch for Secretariat's photo. Funkiwan's cookies are approximately larger than Jupiter. (And delicious!)

Marinara, your cookies and an adorable loaf of something showed up today (wait, today? So I guess mail was delivered on Sunday?) and I'm trying to wait until after dinner to tear into them.

Marinara's cookies are delicious, as is the loaf of something. (What is the loaf? It's good, whatever it is...)

Its Portuguese whisky bread. One of my cookie exchangers gifted it to me last year and I've been making it ever since. :) I'm so happy you like the cookies.
