All y'all Brooklynites looking for something to do - the Steam Whistles at Pratt University in Clinton Hill will apparently be sounding off for the last year ever.

(I may or may not go - I'm a short walk from there, but I am nursing some kind of "I spent time hanging out with a preschooler" bug and may need the sleep.)

“The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective.”
― G.K. Chesterton

"We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential."

I'd love to say that 2015 couldn't possibly be worse than 2014, but history/the fates/the furies/my own horrific luck have a pretty solid stretch of making me look like an idiot when I say things like that. So, uh, happy new year, all. Spend it with people who matter, and spend less time in the company of those who care less about you than you deserve.

On New Year's Day
by Marge Piercy
(an old favorite in the gudrun household)

Bless this house under the pitch pines
where the cardinal flashes and the kestrels hover
crying, where I live and work with my lover
Woody and my cats, where the birds gather
in winter to be fed and the squirrel dines
from the squirrel-proof feeder. Keep our water
bubbling up clear. Protect us from the fire's
long teeth and the lashing of the hurricanes
and the government. Please, no foreign wars.
Keep this house from termites and the bane
of quarreling past what can be sweetly healed.
Keep our cats from hunters and savage dogs.
Watch with care over Woody splitting logs
and mostly keep us from our sharpening fear
as we skate over the ice of the new year.

Am currently sitting directly next to a vaporizer trying to recover from working in a hideously dry office. I may summon the balls to walk over to the steam whistles tonight after all (at about 11:30, that way I only have to stand around in the cold for less than a half hour).

My New Years' have been getting more contemplative as I get older; I'm looking ahead more to tomorrow, which will be a solo retreat-ish sort of day. Plus I always make Hoppin' John and greens.

Although, towards that end, a quick story - I made that for New Years' Day when I first moved into this place. I got in on this apartment when a college friend I knew, then lost touch with, then regained contact with, needed a roommate at the same time I was giving up an apartment. So we knew each other, but were still discovering things. Like - I knew she was from Atlanta, and she knew I was from New England, but we were still learning about each others' cooking habits.

Anyway - I said I was going to make hoppin' john and greens for dinner that day, and offered her some to share when it was done. Sure, she said. So I went into the kitchen, and started at it. And after only a half hour, I announced that the food was ready.

"....Already?" she asked, dubiously.

"Uh...yeah. That's what the recipe I have says."

She stared a moment, then came into the kitchen and tasted the greens. Paused. Then took the spoon out of my hand and gently pushed me out of the kitchen. "You're from New England," she said, turning to the stove. "You wouldn't know. Don't worry, I'll fix this."

Had a nice dinner at the restaurant around the corner and are getting ready to go over the the neighbors' place for a party. They have this big space in an old flashlight factory that they're sort of camped out in and invited the whole neighborhood for a BYOB party. We'll be some of the youngest folks there, most of our neighbors are in their sixties and seventies and can drink two drinks to my one; not sure how that works. Maybe years of practice.

Anyway, happy new year mefites. It's been over ten years since I was a $5 newb here and has been worth every penny.

One of the great pleasures of being in a managerial/supervisory role nowadays is that, on deadly-slow tedious afternoons before holidays, I can send all my staff home early, and stay on solo til 5 to handle any unlikely late-breaking problems that might arise. One of my own previous supervisors used to do this for me and my co-workers, and I feel very happy and fortunate that I can pay it forward.

It was slow and tedious enough today that I ended up spending a lot of the afternoon reading through a bunch of hilarious, inflammatory, wacky, ridiculous old MeTa threads from eight or nine years ago, and realizing anew that this place and its denizens have become such an important--sometimes infuriating, sometimes heartwarming and loveable--part of my life.

Happy new year, everyone. I just got back home from a nice turkey dinner with a friend of mine, his girlfriend, and his dad. We had Crimean/Ukrainian/Disputed wine, which my friend got the cork out of just a few seconds before midnight struck, and it was really good. Hope you all have a good 2015!

She insisted on us waking her up at midnight. We did. The ball dropped. Turned around for a second, and then turned back around to this. At least Cookie's still awake and says "mearrow", which is "Happy New Year Metafilter" in the American Midwestern dialect of Cat Language.

No matter how terrible the years have been, with someone like this in your life you can't help but feel some small shred of hope and an enormous happiness.

Happy New Year, everyone! My lovely fellow Athens mefite called a little after midnight here to wish us a happy New Year, at which point I was already in bed, having managed to stay upright just long enough to see the fireworks while shivering in the rain on our neighbors' balcony.

But we had a lovely New Year's Eve day yesterday, drinking and cooking and being generally sillier than strictly required. Now it's New Year's day here, and I don't even have a hangover, despite the very bad German champagne (don't ask. Next year I intend to rectify this error by buying French beer)... so – so far, so good for 2015! Hugs to all my MetaPeeps!

However pleasantly symmetrical this course of action may appear, I think we both know this is a chimaera that must be destroyed, not indulged. Lives depend upon it.

Happy happy happy 2015!

In the spirit of Anne Shirley, what a nice thing to have a brand new year with no mistakes in it yet - like the quiet peacefulness after a fresh snow, before all the sand and grime make it dirtier than the Charles river.

Upon preview: my personal 2014 was nice too, bearwife, so there are at least two of us! May next year be lovely for everyone personally, and may newsworthy events be at least a little brighter than last year.

Time between the ball dropping and filing a police report about a person in a full-body Gumby outfit pounding on my door only to hand me a piece of paper with a creepy semi-coherent and sexually explicit message: 2 hours.

Hello 2015, you've already smashed all previous records in *one* respect.

I was going to go to the gym today. Really. However, through some combination of an ultra-dry workplace sending my sinuses into hyperdrive, and my being around an adorable little three-year-old disease vector last week (in the form of my nephew), I am a phlegmy mess and am instead probably just going to putter around doing some closet-cleaning-out and pausing at some point to make Hoppin' John and greens.

(Although I'm upping the ante on the luck and using yellow-eye peas instead - it's what I had, and I realized that the gold color more directly manifests the luck I'm hoping for.)

We had a pretty fun time in the chat room party last night, counting down to midnight in the various time zones, sharing cat pictures and music, and having an impromptu group watch of Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog in between Central's midnight and Mountain's midnight.

So thanks, MetaFilter, for setting up that chat room and giving those of us who were homebound last night a virtual space in which to party. :)

My neighbor likes to ignite balloons filled with oxygen and acetylene on New Year's Eve and the 4th of July. I mentioned it here. Last night an incredibly loud explosion went off a couple of minutes after midnight. My neighbor blew a hole in his house. Today there is a large blue tarp covering the damage.

Happy New Year everyone!

It snowed just a tiny tiny bit at midnight in Phoenix last night as we all drank champagne and watched the dogs romp. I hope the whole year is as magical as that moment.

Welp, at least I'm not the only family member who's sick -apparently PaterCallipygos has also had a nasty cough for the past few days, and they had to stay close to home too. And on Sunday my brother said that my nephew had a cough and a fever, so the kid seems to be Patient Zero.

Eh, it gave me an excuse not to go to the gym today and to sit around watching the TWILIGHT ZONE marathon instead.

There's a much safer way to make a really loud boom with carbide. Take an empty liter, or larger if you like, plastic coke bottle, drop a few rocks of carbide into the last sip of coke, screw the cap on tight, swish it around, toss & wait. Eventually, the pressure of the acetylene buildup causes the bottle to fail catastrophically, making a VERY loud noise, no flame required.

I suspect the flame may be a feature, not a bug.
posted by arcticseal at 8:45 PM on January 1, 2015 [4 favorites]

Yeah, a very loud bang is much more fun when accompanied by a ball of flame! (no, not sarcasm)

One New Years in Norway, someone tried to use up an expired marine emergency flare as a firework. Landed on a house and successfully burnt out down, so I can understand your concern.

Is anyone else a little disappointed with the hoverboards? It's like, if you're over 60kg you can barely get the things up to walking pace. And the batteries give out after 30 minutes.
