NYC Meetup? July 26, 2002 8:57 AM   Subscribe

NYC Meetup? I guess we agreed on Aug 6th, but do we have a location yet? I realize that all the ones that meetup.com suggested kinda sucked.
But I do wanna have another get together of the NYC MeFi MoFo Mafia and at this point, I don't care if we meet at Gray's Papaya, but let's pick someplace.

BTW, pips is coming this time too.

I would be interested in said meeting. Some of us have not yet made visual contact with this MeFi MoFo Mafia...

Somebody suggested Double Happiness in the last thread on this topic, another suggested Sweet and Vicious, I would be up for either or could make further suggestions if necessary.

I don't care where it is, so long as there is some sort of obvious notification.
posted by adampsyche at 9:34 AM on July 26, 2002

Whats the time? Seeing as how its a tuesday, Sweet and vicious gets a pretty hefty post-work crowd, but it also has a nice garden. Double Happiness is underground and usually doesn't start picking up a crowd until after 10 (but can end up seriously packed, even on a tuesday).

Could go for something a little less popular (altho' im not sure how welcome a big group would be at lolita).

I don't care where it is as long as we decide soon so that everyone knows where it is.

Double Happiness? They serve food The Mefi Mofo Mob can scare away the regulars. What would Evanizer do is the question.

double happiness:

From speakeasy to mob-run gay bar to its present incarnation as Asian theme bar, Double’s has quite a history. A dank hideout with low ceilings, hidden nooks and a dark, seductive vibe, it’s tastefully hand-decorated and ideal for intimacy or action. Try the Green Tea Martini’s, the favoured infusion of the hip Japanese and Friends-types currently coming in to see-and-be-seen.

"intimacy" and "action"? what kind of mefi party is this?

When I think of Double Happiness, I have flashbacks of the Happyland fire. For god's sake, won't someone think of the fire codes?

I recently went to a bar called Nooblu, on Ave. C btwn. 5th and 6th. It had a lovely, decent-sized outdoor area that overlooks one of the nicer community gardens and they serve sandwiches. The drawbacks are that they serve only beer and wine and the seating, while plentiful, is a bit strange-- anyone remember those giant bouncy balls from childhood? Yeah, those.

I can't find it listed anywhere, though. I wonder if I hallucinated it.

cowboy sally's place sounds kinda cool.

I mean the bar she mentioned, not her apartment or anything.

Shecky's has a listing for Nublu:
Nublu
62 Ave. C
(4th & 5th Sts.)
East Village

Review in progress.

Ah, yes. That's the place, andrewraff. I guess it just opened in May.

(And for the record, jonmc has not been in my apt. Unless he was hiding, or something, which would just be weird.)

Perhaps the flannel acted as camoflage and you didn't see him, cowboy_sally...

"Would you like to play with fire, little boy? Would you like to play with Bob? Would you like to play with Bob?"

Heh... So, where's this meetup going to be? How will we make a decision? Someone needs to be the alpha human here...
posted by evanizer at 12:18 PM on July 26, 2002

I love those bouncy balls! lets go there!

Who needs liquor - certainly not us. (I'll bring a flask in case anyone goes into shock...)
posted by goneill at 12:18 PM on July 26, 2002

What would evanizer do?
Why, he would go to cowboy_sally's place, I'm sure.
posted by goneill at 12:19 PM on July 26, 2002

Seeing as it's a new enough bar to not have yet been reviewed in the usual places... that's a good thing if we're looking to avoid too much of a crowd (besides ourselves, of course).

So yeah -- I'll vote for that!

Hmm, evanizer, you may be right. I had a lucid dream the other night with jonmc in it and he told me the gum I like is going to come back in style.

I thought Nublu was pretty cool, but it's geographically remote for a lot of people. (I like Sweet and Viscous [sic] when it's empty. Maybe a few of us can get there early and scare the magazine interns away from the back patio.) Also, I have no idea if it will still be open. Things I like get discontinued a lot (like The Secret Lives of Men and Dentaguard toothpaste).

How do these meetups work? Do we wear dorky nametags with our MeFi nicknames on them, or what? "Hi, I'm Tin Man." "Hi, I'm Cold Chef." And then the employees all give us weird looks.
posted by Tin Man at 12:42 PM on July 26, 2002

it's geographically remote for a lot of people.

Nublu (Yahoo Map) is just about as far as you can get from any subway line (L, JMZ, 4/5/6). While it sounds great, is there any chance that this can get scooched a little closer to the MTA?

are the meetup police going to come after us?
posted by witchstone at 12:58 PM on July 26, 2002

screw meetup. who want's to "meetup" anyway? We've met up already, we seem to enjoy each other, now lets just get down and party.

mr. meetup man - you'd better listen to your users...

tin man. I assure you that you will have no problem finding this group.

I assure you that you will have no problem finding this group.

Just look for the group that dosen't look like it belongs together.
posted by jonmc at 1:17 PM on July 26, 2002

don't even look, just walk where your instinct tells you to. you might luck out...
posted by goneill at 1:21 PM on July 26, 2002

There were nametags at the last one. I wasn't there, nor was Jason Kotke for that matter.

I would venture a guess that if you scrolled through some of the busier MeTi threads, memorized them and then just walked through the bar muttering them about, the group would find you. Strange science of some sort.

posted by lampshade at 1:26 PM on July 26, 2002

Or just get really drunk first and run around the place saying MeTi instead of MeFi and someone take pity on you.

posted by lampshade at 1:28 PM on July 26, 2002

MeFi sounds a lot like Mai Tai. If you are drunk. my favorite old school net-to-real-life-meet term is Fleshmeet.

a special metafilter drink needs to be created, so when one goes into the right bar and asks the bartender for said special drink they will do that wink-shrug-nod thing and direct you to the Others. I'm so jealous of mefi infested urban areas, you have no idea.

MeFi nametags?

"a special metafilter drink needs to be created,..."

The blue sky martini fits the color requirements.

I'll probably be there again... even tho I didn't know a lot of the personalities before the last one it was a good time. only a potential camping trip in the works would keep me away from another one.

So it's official then?
posted by jonmc at 2:52 PM on July 26, 2002

Let's do it.

And Nublu sounds fine if that is the concensus. What's a couple of blocks to walk?

What time?
posted by lampshade at 3:22 PM on July 26, 2002

whaddaya say guys, do we have a consensus?

posted by jonmc at 8:02 PM on July 26, 2002

I hate the East Village, but I have no other suggestions and I seem overruled.

Not many people seem to care about this one, as we have few suggestions and I recall another thread on this topic that hardly got a post. Is everyone in the NYC area away, or have Metafilter Gatherings worn out their novelty? What's wrong?

I actually think the inscrutable nature of MeetUp really delated everyone's balloon and they just gave up.

C'mon people!

I'm in! :)
posted by metrocake at 8:20 PM on July 26, 2002

I think a lot of us are away (I am but I'll be back), and yes, it didn't feel like real Metafilter-get-together planning on MeetUp since that always happens here.

I got in a brutal street-fight in front of Sweet & Vicious a year ago, and I'm not going near the place.

Nublu sounds cool. Beer's fine (but I might have a bottle of Irish ratholed).
posted by nicwolff at 9:35 PM on July 26, 2002

In, but agree with lampshade -- since I'll already be making the commute in from Jersey (bridge and tunnel krew represent!), the last thing I want to do is walk to Avenue C. But then, I'm a wimp.

B Bar, Double Happiness, and Remote Lounge are hold-overs from previous Manhattan meetup threads. Can we just choose one of them, instead of picking a new venue everytime a new thread is posted?
posted by dogmatic at 9:35 PM on July 26, 2002

ps This is the type of thread that it will really suck to have rollover after another five are posted. Wasn't there talk of an events page? Did anything ever come of it?

I'm in wherever we go, but just let me know and announce it or something, ok?

Once we agree on a site/time can someone who knows the Meetup people inform them of the new time/place?

posted by gen at 8:52 AM on July 27, 2002

(late as usual)
Alright, I voted for Double Happiness, even though I suggested Nublu, b/c the latter is really too much of a shlep for 7/8s of us. Fire hazards be damned, and maybe some of us can trek up to Nublu later on.

I would have voted for B Bar, since I work near there, but I can't go back there, ever-- I once announced to the entire bar that one of the waitresses had herpes. (She did, but that's neither here nor there.)

I, too, voted for Double Happiness. Sounds bodacious, ya know.

Is everyone in the NYC area away, or have Metafilter Gatherings worn out their novelty? What's wrong?

Alot of people are away, at least I would surmise so. That is, if the subway commute is any indication. I think the heat has got people hunkering down close to home too. The poll has nearly 30 votes though.

From NY Mag....
Double Happiness - Subterranean mafia den turned hipster hotspot turned shark pit of scotch-fueled, exotica-seeking weekend warriors.

Now that's a mouthful. Given that it is the weekend, does this mean that I cannot seek exotica or should I lay off the scotch or both?

Either is fine for me. DH seems to be the more popular choice in the poll though. As long as the AC works or if they have an area outdoors.

posted by lampshade at 11:35 AM on July 29, 2002

So should I email the Meetup people and tell them it's going to be at Double Happiness? Or do we assume that people in the know will know and others (like anyone who checks Meetup) are SOL?
posted by gen at 3:51 PM on July 29, 2002

so it looks like double happiness. anyone have the email list from last time?
posted by witchstone at 2:04 PM on July 30, 2002

Well I did email the Meetup people and referenced this thread but now their site is claiming that the meetup will be at a different location. Those of you who've signed up with Meetup should go to metafilter.meetup.com and edit your profiles where you can put in a note pointing people to Double Happiness instead of that place that they're recommending.
