Books in Fanfare August 3, 2016 12:43 PM Subscribe
Since the rollout of Books in Fanfare roughly nine months ago, only about ten people or so have had permission to post them; when is the site looking to roll out the Fanfare Book posting-privilege to the entire userbase?
This post was deleted for the following reason: Poster's Request -- frimble
It should work basically like posting a movie to Fanfare. Once you select 'Books' from the category menu and type in the title, the book information is pulled from Amazon, and it does the same kind of "which book did you mean" disambiguation as would be done with a movie.
As far as I know, at this point, things work as expected, but if there are problems, bugs, suggestions or questions, this thread is definitely the right place for them.

In light of that, I'm inclined to just say, yep, let's throw the doors wide on book posting at this point and turn over some of the experimenting with how it can work to the userbase.
You guys are the best. Thank you.

Once you eat your personal pan Pizza from Pizza Hut, it will run through you faster than you can stop it, also.

I think you have to ask yourself, would a face dancer so obviously have a bunch of sockpuppets? Of course not: they wouldn't want to be so obvious about being a face dancer. However, the Tleilaxu of course know this, so what better way to disguise a face dancer than in plain sight, where anyone without Bene Gesserit training will dismiss them as obviously not a face dancer because they act too much like one.
Since the problem is unsolvable without accepting the Reverend Mothers' diktats, we Ixians have come up with a device, which we are currently testing in our embassies on Arrakis, Giedi Prime and Salusa Secondus to great success, which can detect the subtle signs that someone is a face dancer. We will be sure to let you know once it is ready for sale.

Here in The House of Black and White, the Faceless Men make sockpuppets of the Tleilaxu for the Many-Faced God. A face dancer is no one.

Some discussion maybe on a guideline on releasing series?
The Dresden files and October Daye series have both had their first book posted now and (I'm assuming) the plan is for subsequent books to follow semi regularly. On the other hand all three books of the Lord of the Rings were posted simultaneously.
I think book series on FanFare should be paced to at least give someone who would like to read them and discuss them contemporaneously with everyone else while the post is still on the first page. I know that a FanFare post can be the impetus to finally consume a piece of media. Also allows people who may have read the book in the past to read it again. Both of these things should make for better discussion.

Which is to say: we've had a lot less bandwidth and opportunity to work on FanFare development than I'd hoped around the start of the year, and it'll probably be slow going for a while yet too. In light of that, I'm inclined to just say, yep, let's throw the doors wide on book posting at this point and turn over some of the experimenting with how it can work to the userbase.
I have concerns about discoverability of posts that informed the slow roll-out, and those haven't changed, but they're applicable pan-media to FanFare as it currently works; the long-term plan is still to work on that and make it easier to find/track new posts you might be interested in.
But for now: get your book on, we'll see how it goes.
