MeFi Holiday Card Exchange Planning November 8, 2018 7:25 AM   Subscribe

Who's up for sending more cards for the holidays? (Or receiving!) I plan on coordinating another card exchange this year, if there is interest - I enjoyed receiving cards from MeFites so much last year!

I plan on using Google Forms this year, for ease of compiling data. If you really really hate Google Forms and want to memail me, let me know.

Groups of 10 seemed to work well last year - I will revise it so that you are truly sending to 10 this year, instead of yourself plus 9.

If anyone for sure wants to send to more than that, let me know - I could add you to more than one group, so you can choose 10 or 20.

I plan on doing US Only and International groups again.

Also, if anyone is interested in simply receiving a holiday card but doesn't have the energy/time/whatever to join a group and send some out, feel free to send me a memail with name and address, and I will happily send you a holiday card.

I can open up the Google Forms link November 14th, and leave it open until end of day on US Thanksgiving (11/22), and then will send out card groups by end of day on the 25th, if that works for everyone. (Again, if you want to join and that doesn't work for you, memail me, and I'll work something out.)

Yeah!

I'd also be happy to send some to people who don't have energy/time/whatever to send some out.

I still have last year's cards pinned up on a bulletin board next to my desk - they are cheery

I'm in! (It's okay to send just plain old cards, right? They don't need to be handmade and glorious? Quantity, not quality?)

Box cards are also glorious! It feels so nice to sit down with a cup of tea and a pen and crack open a pristine box of holiday cards. I'm going to find some with glitter on them.

needlegrrl, you're such a star for doing this for us again! Thank you!

The corpse in the libary, yes, box cards are perfectly fine! I think I received a mix last year of handmade, photo, and box cards - I loved them all!

Hooray I will happily do this. I'm wavering on having enough energy for Quonsmas this year but... cards I can handle.

Yes! This was so much fun for Valentine's Day, and while life intervenes too much for me to participate in the regular card club, I'd love to be a part of a one-time holiday card thing. Please count me in!

I am sitting on a pile of cheezy Australian Christmas cards. They need to be exiled from this shore so others may experience very bad Photoshopping. I am in for this mission.

I would like to be in a US group! I can also send cards to people who just want to receive. I think I might even already have cards, because I never send them. But I buy them! I also owe the stationery store a visit, so I should be covered either way.

I would like to do this again. One request - where it matters for addresses, could people indicate with some punctuation mark where the address lines end? I'm looking at addresses for the monthly card club and I'm not sure where the lines begin and end - or whether it matters at all, apart from the logistics of fitting it on the envelope.
posted by paduasoy at 12:00 PM on November 12, 2018 [1 favorite]

paduasoy -- the Card Club addresses are something I can fix. I've just been copy/pasting them as people have entered them, but that does vary (based on a Google forms quirk that I haven't tried fixing). I'll do some editing to make it more clear on the next assignments I send out.

If you want to sign up before then, here is the link!

Hey, this sounds fun, but I've never really done holiday cards. (I don't celebrate Thanksgiving.) Could anyone give a quick summary of how this works? I tried googling it, but it sounds like practices vary *a lot*.
posted by meaty shoe puppet at 6:06 AM on November 15, 2018

meaty shoe puppet - here is the process -
-sign up at the google form, and choose us-only or international and how many cards you want to send
-receive list of addresses through email
-send cards - last year I received a mix of storebought holiday specific cards, non-holiday specific cards, photo cards with family pictures, postcards, handmade cards, etc. I even got one card with a tea bag in it!

I know that my goal with this is not "Everyone send a super specific card from a store that celebrates #holiday" but simply to send and receive mail to other MeFites around the holidays. I don't list a specific date to send by, and try to keep it pretty low stress. I think I sent a mix of Christmas cards and Solstice cards last year, and I think most of my cards this year are Christmas/winter holiday storebought, although I hope to get a little creative with my envelopes.

I'm happy to answer additional questions here or through memail if you have any!
