MetaFilterMusic: new challenges! January 28, 2019 12:43 PM   Subscribe

Back after a break! New challengers welcome. Choose your weapon: righting a wrong song, or a Kate Bush tribute.

After a bit of a hiatus due to a life event, the MeFiMusic Challenge returns, and it's twice as exciting because we're running two consecutively.

Choose the Regular-size challenge if you want to try a quick do-over of a tune that you feel needs a tweak of some kind.

Choose the XL challenge to contribute to an anthology of Kate Bush covers, celebrating her weird genius. In the past, we've done this focusing on one particular album of an artist, but because it's impossible to choose a favourite KB album (or at least controversial) we're just gonna go to town on her whole back catalogue.

Haven't participated before? Come and join the party! Those of us who regularly hang out over there are all across the spectrum of pro to super amateur, so nothing is too rough and ready. Don't want to participate? Feel free to enjoy the results as they come in and do comment, because every time you comment on a music post a musician gets their wings.

Thanks to all of our regular contributors, and a big welcome to any newcomers!

Of course I wanna do Wuthering Heights but would that be too hot, too greedy?

greenish, so good to see you back. :)

billiebee - well now that you've said it, I will request it!

I'm not too familiar with Kate Bush's entire work outside of Hounds of Love - open to hearing people's personal favorites.

Looking forward to folks participating! Let me know if you need backing vox.

This is great. I'm tempted by Army Dreamers.

Cloudbusting is really catchy too.

I would love to do a ukulele cover of The Man with the Child in His Eyes.

somebody please for the love of God change up some of Leonard Cohen's catchy but problematic songs to be less sexist/shitty. I'm happy to record a beautiful version of your work should you be afraid to sing. Sadly i am not a songwriter.

For instance, Everybody Knows really needs a re-do.

Started this thread for the music but, for the record, 100% here for the KB puns

In fact, I'll be running up that hill for the KB puns

Given that I am both unfamiliar with most of Kate Bush's music and not particular talented or skilled at making music (my main instrument is the computer and I play it with more enthusiasm than talent), I'm kind of interested in trying this in the hope that I might produce some good cool interesting outsider art.

If anyone here would like to enable my bad behavior, please suggest a song I haven't heard (basically, anything that's not a hit) and point me at a relatively uninteresting cover of it. And as a bonus, this will allow you to steer me away from ruining one of her classics.

I'm planning on leaning in to the whole ignorance thing and rather than covering Ms Bush herself, covering some other cover, preferably something bland that strips away all the power and nuance of the original and just replicates the melody and lyrics. An acapella version would probably work, or a chiptune version or maybe a quick-and-dirty acoustic guitar cover. Something different and not terrible but also not brilliant.
