a) I am DELIGHTED that Jessamyn also says people are "a pip." People look at me weird when I say that BUT IT'S A GREAT TERM. My daughter is 100% a pip, I know no other word to describe her!

b) Delighted you mentioned me in the On Eagles' Wings thing b/c WOW IS IT WEIRD when my specific masters degree focus (i.e., Christian liturgy) comes up on MetaFilter! Also my Facebook feed, which is full of theologians and liturgists of all stripes, COMPLETELY LOST ITS MIND.

c) Jessamyn, re: English-language hymns, they grow out of first Christmas carols, which are vulgar-language, popular alternatives to boring churchy Latin hymns. But probably HALF of the English-language hymnal originates with Charles Wesley (the less-appreciated brother of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church), who wrote SIXTY-FIVE HUNDRED (6500) hymns in English, with amazing scansion and he was AMAZING at making theological terms rhyme. They are very good in that they scan, they rhyme, and they're theologically correct. THAT IS DAMN-ASS RARE, most modern Christian music is hot garbage theologically. (And I will 100% have this conversation! I love it! I got a degree in it! I have so many thoughts! Most of which are "Can't you see, you're not making Christianity better? You're just making Rock 'n' Roll worse!")

Two of my favorites include of the oldest: Veni Veni Emanuel (8th or 9th Century) [O Come O Come Emanuel], and the lyrics for Adeste Fideles [Oh Come All Ye Faithful] probably go back many centuries. Their english translations do help a lot with keeping them popular, but I do love both of those old carols. There aren't many that are that old, however.

Eyebrows and I have talked and I think I was confusing hymns with gospel (with cortex's caveats about blues/jazz, of course) maybe? I will try to recover whatever memory had confused me initially.

Well, and hymns are not necessarily carols. Like, All I Want For Christmas Is You (written by Mariah Carey, for anyone who didn't know that), is a carol, but is definitely not a hymn.

Thanks for the recruitment help! Nobody contacted me about the doll glasses, so I'm improvising my own solution. I crocheted some thin little cords in all the right sizes (just last night) and sometime soon (probably Friday) I will lay the pieces out in the appropriate shape and cover them in sugar water and then let they dry stiff. Hopefully that will work and they will be well-received in the stocking on Christmas morning.

As far as Sandi Tokvig's alleged lack of flatulence is concerned, I can assure you her claim wasn't a joke of any kind. I've seen her and other comedians do jokes (even deadpan ones) and that's not what this was.

I suppose what I was hoping for from the thread was someone medically qualified who could tell me whether it's even physically possible to live as long as she has without at least the occasional anal gas discharge. Personally, I'm betting not.

The hymn talk reminds me that for some inexplicable reason, Swedish newspapers refer to Thanksgiving in the US as a "religious holiday" and ... the only thing I miss about the Southern Baptist church is the singing. I really enjoyed many of the hymns.

I love that bit of parody (does it qualify as parody or is it something else?) so much. Thanks for the podcast, jesstex!

While I don't believe a person can NOT fart, ever. I am intrigued. As a non-burper (really a very rare burper), I feel some connection here. I did not successfully learn how to burp.

Apropos of very little, my favorite That's Amore parody is:

And you mispronounce trees
Sycamore.
