188: Big Stride Moonshot December 5, 2022 8:55 AM   Subscribe

Some difficulties hitting escape velocity with this one. We recorded it in October 5th and, well, here it is now.

This episode is functionally a magical time capsule: recorded the month before all the Twitter shit started being flung so forcefully at the fan. Enjoy the blissful peace of temporal dissonance, we'll probably both talk a LOT about all that next ep.

I am having trouble with playing the podcast from this page OR on iTunes. Is something wrong or is it me?

Maven: I was noticing some flakiness as well, but it's working for me now. The file is at https://podcast.mefi.us--s3v2.s3.amazonaws.com/188-Big-Stride-Moonshot.mp3 if you want to download it directly.

Podcast newbie here. Is it possible to listen using either Stitcher or Spotify?

Is it possible to listen using either Stitcher or Spotify?

Not yet. I've started the process of getting the podcast available on Spotify but the contact email address is Matt's so it may take a little doing. Medieval Maven, I updated the direct link to be the httpS version and that might help.

I'm also not able to download the file using the direct link to the mp3 due to an "unknown download error" in firefox and a "network error" in chrome.

Ditto on the no download problem.

I've got a note in to frimble trying to figure out what is up. In the meantime feel free to download here.

I've got a note in to frimble trying to figure out what is up.

If it helps, I think it's that something is horked with subdomains and certs. The file for this podcast is hosted at
https://podcast.mefi.us--s3v2.s3.amazonaws.com/
while previous podcasts files are at
https://mefipodcast--s3v2.s3.amazonaws.com/
Notice the extra periods (podcast.mefi.us--s3v2) in the first domain? s3 storage presents a wildcard SSL certificate that is valid for *.s3.amazonaws.com, which matches mefipodcast--s3v2.s3.amazonaws.com, but not podcast.mefi.us--s3v2.s3.amazonaws.com. Since the doesn't have a valid cert, various browsers will refuse to load it as untrusted.

Thank you, direct download link should be working now. Got the Spotify ownership stuff working correctly but Spotify's "add your podcast" option is currently borked so that might take some time.

Hooray!!! I thought the podcast might have gone for good and I'm so excited to see it hasn't.

Two months out I have no idea what I was even referring to with that.

Re the 'Proust' pronunciation -
The wikipedia IPA in the Proust article says /pruːst/ pronounced u as in cruel.
Monty Python's Summarize Proust competition sketch pronounced it the same way. (Cannot find usable link,)
Steve Martin, in the gag intro to Paul Simon's "Proof", also pronounced it the same way.

Cortex, you were referring to the 'know your meme' site. (In case you wanted to know.)

I've been living my whole life thinking that crystal is not glass. I blame the Waterford industrial complex and their constant lobbying.

I think this has been addressed up thread tangentially, but something is up with the certificate because Google podcasts app wouldn't let me download it and I had to play it in browser instead.

If anyone uses Castro podcast player it’s playing there! 20 minutes in.

I've been living my whole life thinking that crystal is not glass.

You're not the only one to be mistaken about what is and isn't crystal. As I mentioned in the original thread, research by the LoC and partners shows that the Laurent flutes are largely not even lead glass crystal- they're mostly potash glass. Of the 18 flutes they have, only two (the Madison flute and DCM 1051) are lead crystal.

Vaguely related, Facebook just threw my way a name which maybe 5% of current membership will recognize. But whether from algorithm or Metaversal cybertelepathy I know not -- I had thought of him recently but done no searches...

I posted a transcript from Otter, now including automated summary keywords. (Probably not helpful! But amusing to me!)
