Use IRC? Come join the #metafilter channel on Efnet, to chat with your fellow Metafolks. You'll need an IRC client, if you don't already have one.

Or, at least, you can chat with me.

I've been idling there since I created this topic, and only Aaaugh! and Lirp showed up. Are you sure you were you on Efnet? If I'm not there, you're not in the right channel. (Or maybe Efnet is in split mode.)

Anyone know of a web-based IRC client? Something that'll talk through port 80? Because I don't have enough ways to not get my work done during the day.

Oh, yeah. You showed up too. I forgot. Sorry! As far as web-based access to Efnet, I don't know of anything reliable. Efnet itself is falling apart. Maybe I should just run my own IRC server for the weblog community...

Some people have been running a #blogirc on a private server for a year now. it was originally started by metajohn. it did start on EFnet but that didn't last very long. because EFnet stinx0rz.

I haven't been in months now, but I imagine it's still going. Last I checked it was irc.turlyming.net , Wednesday nights. My apologies if they've all disbanded or moved again since last I was up to speed... this might be old info.

Nikolai has made mention of it in the Bloggie (or whatever) awards bit (which has been up for at least a few hours and still no MeFi link. I'm kind of suprised, really. I guess my reasons for not linking it are shared by quite a few people) so I'm guessing it's still up.

Though I've tried in the past to connect to it one a wednesday night and been rejected by the server or found empty channels. <shrug> YMMV.

If the #metafilter channel is up 24/7 it would probably be the preferred place for MetaFilistines, especially since I doubt everyone on #blogirc gives a damn about MetaFilter topics, and vice versa.

Is anyone having trouble getting to Efnet? Any other recommendations for IRC networks? Undernet? Dalnet? Chatnet? I've never really used anything besides Efnet, but I'm getting pretty sick of the netsplits.

a channel i frequent recently moved from Efnet to newnet. i know the operators considered the decision carefully, but i don't know enough about irc to say anything more about it.

Well, I'm in here now. I'm not idling. Come say hi.

I am hereby abandoning the Metafilter IRC channel for lack of interest. Maybe we can do a weekly get-together for a couple hours on a particular night, if anyone's interested.

I joined the IRC channel a couple of times over the past week, and yeah, dead is a generous description. :-)

I'd be in for a given night though. Just say when and where.

(wednesday's probably bad, 'cause #blogirc meets then, and if there's crossover we don't want to make people choose.)

Despite a previous quick attempt at setting up an IRC server, and the occasional lurking in a channel or two, I'm not very knolwedgeable of it.

If I were to go to an EFNet server, and /join #metafilter, even though no one's set up such a channel, it creates that channel for me, right?

I like the idea of a Metafilter IRC chat, though obviously I'm one of the few :-), and have since Waxpancake stopped keeping the channel static, occasionally gone in and joined it anyway.

So if you're ever bored and looking for what's likely to be a good place to find people to chat with, I think you should just hop on EFNet and /join #metafilter. Who knows what may happen. :-)
