Server's back up. Not all the updates are done, but the server should be exactly the same as before.

Incidentally, though the site was a bit silly for a while when it was down, the same standards hold for mefi proper now that it's back up. Seeing how quickly things can devolve gives me a new appreciation for all the work Matt does every day. So thanks again, Matt.

(This is just a status thread, so I don't mean to prompt for silly chatter or backslapping. Discussion about the downtime, though, is still on-topic.)

Wow! Is this why there are no posts today? I've never seen that happen.

metafilter: god forbid anybody should have some fun.

Not to be chatty, but can I go back to not having a life? Or do I have to find one again?

That downtime space-thread was fantastic.

(Especially Litterbox; I'm still laughing.)

Please do let us know if that fantastic downtime space-thread was archived and, if so, where.

Completely OT, but the girl below me practised her recorder for like half an hour. Now's she's got the Macarena on repeat.

Just wanted to get that out. Oh, and thanks for getting mefi back up.

Seeing how quickly things can devolve

I posted an actual link, about this New Yorker review of Samuel Fuller's autobiography

You guys just made fun of Miguel and poor Stan Chin, instead

I'll tell mathowie about it. I got all your names and stuff

uhh...now I feel really chagrined because I contributed to the silliness. Figured the normal rules didn't apply because the site was down. Evidently that was incorrect...and apologies to Matt, Anil, and anyone else who deserves one. Glad the site is back up, and your work is appreciated.

Seeing how quickly things can devolve

It was like coming across a dark back alley in an otherwise familiar city. Everybody thought the cops weren't around, anarchy ensued...I was entertained. And now that the cops are watching, I'm sure everybody will once again obey the law.

It was outrageous. I was never so humiliated in my entire life. Stan Chin and I will be forming a victims' party. None of you ('cept Matteo) may attend. ;)

Better the rule of One, whom all obey,
Than to let clamorous demagogues betray
Our freedom with the kiss of anarchy.

Actually, I'm not certain what you were doing to it, nor if it is connected to the maintenance, but the site seems to be working significantly faster tonight.

Ok, I don't know if I'm just contributing to a Bad Thing by acknowledging this, but I did save a copy of that thread from within 3-4 minutes of it being taken down. I'd be happy to email it to anyone else who would like to host it for pubic access.

Errr... never mind. It definately ain't there.

host it for pubic access

Yeah, that's basically what it looked like to me, as well.

I hope somebody has a copy. Tears were rolling down my face, I tells ya. And there were at least six different Miguels.

Sorry, wasn't trying to sound like a scolding schoolmarm. The original thread is archived, I'll post a link when I get a chance to put it back up somewhere.

I will say, however, that apparently a few people took exception to the "Evil Mathowie's" rant, without realizing that it came, almost verbatim, from William Shatner's mocking of Trekkies from a now infamous sketch on Saturday Night Live.

I do not blame myself. Those persons need to watch more television in order to catch all my pop culture references (which, now that I think about it, come almost exclusively from SNL or the Simpsons).

Also, Miguel really is just a pretty little girl.

not to be a nit-picker, but I've noticed that my username in the upper right hand side of the filter home page is in all lowercase now that the the upgrade has been installed, as is the 'posted by' in the preview screen, but not in the post itself.
anyone else, or is or is this too neurotic a point to post.

I think it's mathowie's way of letting you know you should have picked a user name with lowercase letters like all the cool people.
