Bloggies 2003 nominations January 22, 2003 4:06 PM   Subscribe

Time to stuff the Ballot for the 2003 bloggies and get Matt some tickets to SXSW. At the very least, let's get him a Lifetime Achievement Award over Kottke and Anil. On a related note, I've been wondering what your "Best of 2003" for Metafilter would be? Your favorite/most memorable thread, and who would be your pick for the coveted Poster of the Year kudos? Worst meme and injoke this year? Dumbest metatalk thread? (other than this one)

Stan I think you mean "Best of 2002" not 2003.

Ok I voted for Matt and Dean Allen.

Matt got my vote straight away. And not just because I haven't heard of any of the other people...

No! Kottke in 2003! Kottke in 2003!

I've got a line on free sxsw tickets until the heat death of the universe.

Kottke in 2003!

Goddamnit Matt, just give your tickets to Kottke after you win them.

Anyway, I'll throw some out. These selections were done with no research and "off the top of my head" so don't be offended if I missed something. I'll probably add some later when I have time to mull over it.

Most Memorable Thread: Miguel's 9/11 anniversary link-a-thon... gonna have to think a bit more on this one for my favorite 'regular' post.

Dumbest Metatalks: I'm going to nominate mostly all of Miguel's.

The "Hey, at least you Tried" award: Webmutant's rating system and also Frykitty's FAQ

Worst meme: Vibrating. Honestly, it wasn't that funny the first time.

Overall poster: Madamjujujive

More as I come up with them later.
posted by Stan Chin at 4:27 PM on January 22, 2003

I already voted for mefi, matt, and stavrosthewonderchicken.

Worst meme and injoke this year?

All of them.

Poster of the Year?

The Reservoir Dogs poster on the wall behind my computer.

Oh, that kind of poster? I definitely have a favorite but I would never reveal his/her name. They probably know who they are.

Maybe you could put them up as a prize for a "MeFite of the Year" competition or something. After you win, of course :-)

I already voted for mefi, matt, and stavrosthewonderchicken
Me too, iconomy - and I plan to do so many more times.

Best thread - definitely Miguel's 9/11 anniversary one
Worst in-joke - buffed, muffed, cuffed, stuffed (total flop)
Dumbest MeTa thread - both of mine
Poster of the Year - probably Stan Chin (or stanchin, I can never decide which)
posted by dg at 5:42 PM on January 22, 2003

favorite thread - the MeFi cliche thread that languagehat called out
dumbest meta thread - miguel's "do I moderate my own posts too much" thread
worst in-joke - all of them, although now that I know about Yelling At Nothing's user page, I can at least appreciate them more
favorite poster - Stan Chin. Interesting FPPs, funny commentary, makes mefi a better place.

...all of them are ass!

*cries*

Seriously, I'm a little freaked out at this nomination thing - it's nice, like having your bobo honked, but unpleasant, like having your eyes poked out at the same time. Given that Wil Wheaton and Fark swept the bloody things last year, I find it hard to take very seriously.

I say you're determined to vote, though, you should vote in my (asian blogs) category for our very own lia (who doesn't come round much these days, but c'est la etc etc) of cheesedip fame. She rocks! And is at least 37% less assy than me, I reckon.

You could of course vote for our very own BWG, too, who may or may not be assier than me (I'm a little vague on the International Assiness Scale™), but is a groovy fella nonetheless, and deserving of your kisses and hugs.

By saying I "looked" at "all" of them, what I meant was I looked at three of them and made some sweeping generalizations. For the record, I just wanted to use the word ass as an adjective. I should have learned my lesson when they fired me from my gig as a film reviewer (although The Mothman Chronicles was a little ass, admit it).

I think that it's more than a little sad that all 5 nominees for the 'lifetime achievement award' are in their 30's. Sort of makes the rest of your life kind of anti-climactic, don't you think?

That said, Heather Champ deserves your vote.
posted by crunchland at 8:24 PM on January 22, 2003

all 5 nominees for the 'lifetime achievement award' are in their 30's.

Jason's still 29 and Anil's a baby (25 I think).

But you're right, after an accolade like "lifetime achievement in the field of blogging" everything else is downhill.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 8:30 PM on January 22, 2003

In other award events, the lifetime achievement award always goes to the old codgers who pretty much don't stand a chance of ever winning another award, and, in the case of the Oscars, were generally overlooked in past years, and the lifetime achievement award is sort of a booby-prize.

A lifetime achievement award for a 25 year old? That's just downright perverse.

But they're rigged?

I'm glad you posted that, mcwetboy (although I can't say if you did so in sincerity or in jest). I thought it was a well written essay and brings up a lot of good points. Most of those I know don't take the bloggies to seriously, but there are a few that take it a little to the extreme. Completely ironic case in point.

To say the least. I've been a good ballot-stuffing MeFi citizen and voted Matt for everything, but are we really sure that these awards are something to be _real_ proud of? I think that the best award for this site's creator is an interesting thread with well-researched links, and the appreciation of the thousands of users of MeFi.
Remember that James L. Brooks kicked Ingmar Bergman's ass at the Oscars, that Henry Kissinger is a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
If Fark wins an award and we don't , does it mean that their site is really better than MetaFilter?

Worst meme, or the one I'm sickest of, would be the whole p*nc**e o**rl**d thing - I can't even say it, let alone write it.

Worst MeTa thread - so many come to mind, but the ones I truly hate involve name calling and cuss words.

In almost precisely the same way that MetaTalk is a weblog about Miguel, I think.

Now go vote in the Bloggies for the much-loved (and sometimes reviled) Mr Kottke (although I must admit I voted for our fearless Meta-leader), and someone other than the much-reviled Mr Chicken, or I'll spank you until your bottom is blue.

Nice to know one person here thinks I'm really an OK guy.

Of course I'd be remiss in pointing out your site's inherent coolness.

The funny thing is, my site barely qualifies for the nomination. If I'd yanked the dates from the bottom of my Daily BWG posts, they'd say it's not a blog. I no longer consider it a blog, though most do.

I don't care if I win or not, but if I don't, I hope you do.
