It seems like others can get to the site fine, but I've been getting this same error for a few days now when trying to access MetaFilter:

The value "" cannot be converted to a number

The error occurred in C:\metafilter sites\www.metafilter.com\header.cfm: line 166
Called from C:\metafilter sites\www.metafilter.com\index.mefi: line 178

I remember a similar error message. Deleting the MeFi cookie from the browser worked for me.

I'm thinking that in order to post to "bugs" there should be a standard "Have you tried deleting the MeFi/MeTa cookies?" prompt.

Sorry to have inconvenienced you terribly by asking for help with a problem. I'll know better next time.

tomorama,

you didn't inconvenience me, I didn't mean to be non-helpful above, only that:

a. most of these 'bugs' turn out to be "cookie issues"
b. it would have been appropriate to include OS and browser version

if you've deleted your MeFi cookies and are still having problems post here again.

But I must admit Tomorama helped me; I've had the same error message on my computer at work for a week now. I wouldn't necessarily have known to delete the cookie.

I have been remarkably productive at work this week, though. Metafilter - good for your brain, bad for your work.
