New comment count doesn't seem accurate January 31, 2001 8:37 AM   Subscribe

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but when I'm coasting through MeFi, the number of new comments is no longer accurate. In fact, if there are 50 comments on a topic, I'm told that there are 50 new, everytime I come back to the Home page, no matter if I refresh or use my back button, no matter how many times I've read through or even posted comments to a thread. I haven't changed any of my settings and this is on three different computers (all PCs, all using IE 5.0) so I don't think it's a cookie problem, or is it?

Well, it should only update when your session times out, or you close your browser, then return to MetaFilter. I don't keep track of every thread you've read and not read, so don't expect a new comments indicator to change within a single visit.

That said, I'm reworking all the session code now.

I've had the same problem now that there is sorting by new comments. I've tried logging out, waiting so many hours, etc. and every time I come back I am told there are 20 some odd new posts on a thread in which I've read all 20 some odd posts to begin with. Frustrating! :)

This happens to me, too, regardless of whether I close my browser or not. In fact, I can reboot, and MeFi still shows me as being logged in. (shrug)

um, not sure if there's any point in saying this, but ditto what palegirl said. a minute ago i got annoyed with the "719 comments posted" text and finally discovered that by switching the sort to Date then it reset everything. so can it be changed to recognize our activities when in other sorting methods?
