What's there not to love, and envy and desire?

Funny how making it to a MeFi meet-up has suddenly become one of my life projects.

And thanks - aw! - for that shout-out. A bit of alright, that bartender. Though not a patch on you guys and gals!

*renews whole love affair with MetaFilter*

Just one query: who the living fuck is that "rushmc"? ;)

taxi's pictures, he is still waiting to join MeFi, he's been on #mefi a while. A really nice guy and fun to hang out with.
posted by riffola at 2:15 PM on June 7, 2003

Matt, why isn't AttackTheTaxi a member? For that matter, why isn't Bongy a member? Anyone who spends as much time lurking, going to #mefi and even attending MeetUps should be all rights be a member; Surely two additional users wouldn't break the system!

Miguel: We could have one in Toronto. With all the SARS hysteria, we could probably convince the government to fly you here gratis if you promise to provide a boost to the tourism industry.
posted by Fabulon7 at 2:39 PM on June 7, 2003

Yeah, Matt - let them in, please. They're both witty and original and MetaFilter would be much the better for their contributions.

This campaign will not cease - you might as well give in now. At least them be the first 2 of the first 10 when you open the door again. Or poster boys for the sponsored members idea. If you want a petition, we'll rattle up an impressive one too! :)
posted by MiguelCardoso at 2:42 PM on June 7, 2003

Fabulon 7 - done! Toronto it is! I must anyway try to counteract my cowardly prime minister's atrocious behaviour.

As long as you have some grilled sardines on Tuesday, that is! :)
posted by MiguelCardoso at 2:45 PM on June 7, 2003

because attackthetaxi and bongy did some pretty horrible things, i hear. sure they're funny, and smart, but since when does that mean you have the right to just do anything you want? you have to think of people's safety.

Don't forget q, I have your home address.

And, now that I think about it, what was that scratching at your window this morning?

so. fucking. bitter.

Y'all New Yorkers are pretty, pretty folks.

Patiently awaiting SF meetup. What, do I have to organize it myself?

(bear in mind that if I do, it will be someplace crappy)
posted by padraigin at 4:51 PM on June 7, 2003

Damn I should have gone. Next time. Is it by chance these reunions occur, or are they more or less a given annual gig, biannual, etc.

Last time we covered it at wnyc (93.9), next time I'll have it on all the local npr stations. Hell, we should do on-site interviews.

Are there are any seeds in the works about another nyc reunion for 2003?
posted by bluedaniel at 5:13 PM on June 7, 2003

They seem happen roughly quarterly, bluedaniel. No real schedule per se, though. (The Holiday Cocktail Lounge meetup was covered on WNYC???) Some of the monkeys get together a bit more frequently.

Quarterly? That's perfect! I'm going to be in NYC in September - maybe I can get in on the fall session?

Although I see no evidence of promised wonderchickensian shoutouts, I am, to be honest, uncertain as to what a shoutout actually is, and so am willing to forgive.

September is perfect! In fact I told chicobangs we should have one in Sept. just last night.
posted by riffola at 6:26 PM on June 7, 2003

Oh my head

Shameless, all this revelry while some of us are still fighting the good fight here in Portugal.
posted by MiguelCardoso at 6:26 PM on June 7, 2003

So, Migs, are you one of the "journalists, politicians, artists and others"? What do they call y'all, anyway? Naptivists?

Rhyax, this is no time for jokes. In case anyone thought he was speaking seriously.

I can't speak for the Holiday Meetup, but I was on the crew that arranged the Haughey interview last summer.

Many of (NPR) follow MeFi regularly, not for any need other than MeFi and its members are - without sounding patronizing or brown-nosing - fascinating. The influence it and the MeFites have is overhwelming. Then again, you know that.

My thinking is to do a follow-up story come time for another reunion as a piece for Weekend All Things Considered.

I need to check, but I believe there are at least 3 of us from NPR that are members. Let's get their feedback on such an idea?

of course i'm kidding. but bongy and taxi really are vampires.

Stavros, I'm pretty sure that you had a wondernapkinshoutout all to yourself when I was in New York a couple of weeks ago. I think we even wrote it before there had been far too much alcohol consumed, and we couldn't spell "Stavros" anymore.
posted by readymade at 8:52 PM on June 7, 2003

I tried to convince chicobangs to let me write a shout out to you on his bald head , but I didn't manage to pour enough booze down him...

I have failed you, stav.
posted by jonmc at 8:57 PM on June 7, 2003

Okay, I was correct about the shoutout, but "Stavros" was shortened to make it "hip" or "sassy" or some nonsense like that. You are also being worn like a pasty by chicobangs, but it's the thought that counts.
posted by readymade at 9:00 PM on June 7, 2003

That's really interesting, bluedaniel. (Major NPR fan here....was super-jazzed to share a pressroom with Peter Kenyon and David Welna once upon a time.) I didn't hear the Haughey intvu, but great to hear that NPR is following us. So the local stations can pitch stuff to NPR HQ in Washington?

MeFi sounds like it'd be a good story...but the meetups themselves would probably make a good setting for a radio piece but crummy radio in and of themselves. ;-)

Why is there a bizarre red thread going between amberglow's beer, and some dude's crotch in this picture? I was going to put it down to photographical oddity, until I noticed it disappears behind taxi's leg.. so something has to be going on.

This is as intriguing as the crazy guy in the Blogumentary.

I am now fully mollified, and feeling quite sassy. Thanks, swell intarweb pals! I missed the chicopasties first time 'round.

Next time, I swear I'm flying to NYC†.

You met Kenyon, eh? What was your impression? (not a loaded statement. he's great people actually. just curious to what you did!).

I can get a copy of the Haughey interview for you, but we may want to ask Matt if he's cool with it. Bottom line it's his gig I suppose.

Wow, SyndicataFilter.

I'm sorry, but I had to. You know this. You know this.

NPR in DC is comprised of all local NPR stations. Mind for the anchors, all the material is fed from the stations. We feed to them everyday. Just as we take in the final feed to b'cast.

Yea, I've done WLTC stories before, and think they would bite on this as a interest piece no doubt.

Cross fingers of course, but yes. This is why I'm racking my brain who the other NPR MeFi's are. I once knew their screenames. I'll recall soon enough. I'd be curious to their take on it.

Safety in numbers.

Shout-outs matter. Everything else is just surrogate bartending; vicarious bonhomie. [It says here.] :)

Vicarious bonhomie has suddenly manifested itself as a powerful thirst in yours truly. Off I go.

Shoutouts from hama6.

Why is there a bizarre red thread going between amberglow's beer, and some dude's crotch...

This is why amberglow is called amberglow... ability to create and direct aura trails at will when fueled by the amber elixer.

(Just one of the many mefites with supernatural skills, btw... would probably make a good NPR story.)

Wow, hama7 - thanks, old fruit! On top of it all, I love Stella Artois!

Give me a few months to get a digital camera so I can regale you with impeccable photographs of seafood and vinho verde in honour of your good self. :)

For Stavros' sake, I wish I had gotten drunker. But even my largish dome might not have had enough room to print all 23 letters of your full name across it.

Besides, how does one improve on paper pasties?

One thing: Siberia was apparently serious about their "no swearing, and no hitting on women" policy. Which put a serious crimp in witchstone's style.
