I'll come out of my lurker state (though i used to be more active on this site) to say this.

Walk away from an attack. Ignore the person who is attacking you. Talk over them, around them, whatever. Dont let them drag you down.

To those of us who hang around this site frequently, we know who the good guys are and the bad guys are. We have learned to filter the signal from the noise.

You dont need to point out the assholes. I know who they are and most frequent visitors do too.

This is not a courtroom. Pointing them out repeatedly only makes you look almost as bad. And its exactly what they want you to do - they thrive on the attention.

Take the high road.

That was not exactly my point, vacapinta, as it is a given. I linked to a part of a conversation with dhoyt about how easy it can be to take offense, how easy it can be to misconstrue, intentionally or unconsciously, someone's words or intentions, a conversation which began with his explosion at me as a cae in point. I thought I was talking about my experience of having a short fused temper, about the the nature of character and the effort it takes to change. You, in plural, made it out to be about jonson but he doesn't need my bad press. That he handled on his own.

On harassment and baiting, I will say this on a related topic: I like quonsar a lot. But what he did to son_of_minya was cruel and wrong, and he got rightly banned for his part. He then came back and pasted an email from s_o_m in pride in a thread totallly unrelated, which incited a spate of s_o_m bashing, and possibly incited s_o_m, as he reads MetaFilter. s_o_m had escalated to really murderous threats by this time.

I couldn't understand why quonsar would taunt a person still, after all that had happened, after he had already been banned, a person who was mentally unstable, especially when running a risk of depriving his future grandchildren from the pleasure of his company by pursuing the pleasure of tormenting s_o_m. Apart from the risk, it was like making fun of a person with cerebral palsy for the way they talk or walk. Matt wisely scrubbed all this. I lost some respect for quonsar for continuing his feud after all that happened--hell, for pursuing it at all. I didn't care for s_o_m but what quonsar, and accomplices, did was wrong and cruel.

You may party on now.

Actually, if you go back and re-read, the conversation began with your explosion at him. dhoyt posted an innocuous photo with no accompanying text, and you flipped out, saying

I think y2karl is making a grab for Miguel's mantle. Not only is he making a patented Cardoso Pointless Self-Referential MeTa Post, he's closing in on what one would have thought was Miguel's unassailably high Contribution Index. Of course, Miguel seems to be cooperating by keeping his posting to a minimum, so maybe the fix is in. Anyway, I await developments with bated breath.
