posted by amberglow at 1:23 PM on November 18, 2003 [1 favorite]

the first rule is that you aren't to talk of file pile, but since new accounts have been dissabled, there is no real point to protecting the secret.

OK, I don't get it. What is FilePile, why aren't we allowed to talk about it, what is the "secret," and why when I click on the link in the deleted post do I get a blank page with links at the top (About, FAQ, etc.) that lead to identical blank pages? Spare me the wink-wink nudge-nudge and spread that good, good information.
posted by languagehat at 1:44 PM on November 18, 2003

It's a running joke that you're not supposed to talk about it. I thought the post made little sense to 99% of metafilter users, so I nixed it (sorta like posting "the old mill in paducah, kentucky just opened everyone!").
posted by mathowie (staff) at 1:47 PM on November 18, 2003

FilePile is a website where you can post and download files. The clever and funny Andre Torrez is the webmaster, and new signups are disabled and have been for a while, I think because of bandwidth issues. That's all. Apparently it was down for a bit, and now it's back up. But only for those with logins, which makes the post here seem kind of redundant.

Granted, I don't know how many people are members of FilePile, but I know that the vast majority of people viewing MetaFilter are not members, so "let[ting] people with accounts know that its back up" is a poor post. Somehow I doubt that Kuro5hin or Plastic posted similar messages when MetaFilter went down for nearly a week.
posted by me3dia at 3:02 PM on November 18, 2003

valium - nice of you delineate what metafilter is and isn't.

Isn't that what metatalk was originally for? If you can't handle Prince Valium's very mild criticism, I don't know why you asked the bleeping question in the first place.

I'll admit to initially accepting your ?gratitude? to PV at face value, though. I'm still not sure what you actually meant.
posted by attackthetaxi at 3:11 PM on November 18, 2003

whining - perhaps. I was unclear why it was deleted, so i was asking, in light of other similiar posts not being deleted. The fact that the most mefites wouldn't know what filepile was hand't occurred to me - blame that on tunnel vision i suppose.

i still don't approve of a single person (who is not matt) attempting to set bounds on what metafilter should and should not be. However, PV seems to speak with the majority so ill pipe down about it.
posted by Tryptophan-5ht at 3:18 PM on November 18, 2003

He does have a point - Matt's reason was fairly cryptic, if also really funny. Had it been me, I'd have wanted some follow-up as well. Of course, I might just have emailed Matt, but giving Our Leader a chance to let everyone know why it was deleted is a public service, in the long run.

"i still don't approve of a single person (who is not matt) attempting to set bounds on what metafilter should and should not be."

Tryptophan-5ht - You say you're new here, so maybe you have missed one of the bedrocks of MetaFilter. Which is easy to do BTW. Not your fault. Here's the deal: Matt does not set bounds on what MetaFilter should or should not be. That's sort of the point. There are no hard rules. Even double posts and self posts will get by in very rare cases. He leaves what MetaFilter should be up to the community at large.

Which brings us to this thread. This is how the question of "what MetaFilter should and should not be" gets decided. It's rude. It's humbling (some would say humiliating). And it's cat herding. Which, though it's rarely said openly, is what works best. Strange but true.

Still confused/annoyed? Here's the accepted behavior: A question is posted, everyone yells for a bit, we all get a sense of the prevailing sentiment on the issue, and it's done. Then there is a lot of pointless babbling.

In this case your question is sort of a no-brainer for the community - This is not a link most members will be interested in. So "prevailing sentiment" is decided rather quickly and then we move on to the traditional (though repeatedly discouraged by Matt) pointless babbling phase.

As someone who has been 'round the block here afew times I'll offer this advice: Stay away from the pointless babbling at the end of MetaTalk threads. It will fuck you up for life.

"my issue was with one person speaking for the community at large."

Yep. That's the tricky part. We are all suppose to assert our own opinion as if it was read verbatim from the guidelines. Seriously. That's the only way things get done around here. If it gets too silly Matt will jump in and give us his opinion, but we usually ignore him.

jonson (who I loath for no good reason) had the definitive take on your question up towards the top. After that things were pretty much settled. So we moved on to attacking you. Not very nice, but there it is. This is what we do.

Rather than kicking sand at PrinceValium you should have made some sort of juvenile and non-responsive sexual reference, or linked to a picture of a kitten (for no reason at all), or something silly. I know it's hard to understand. Trust me when I tell you it's even harder to justify.

Best to just avoid anything past the 10th comment all together. It will have been settled by then and people will have already started bringing out their best grade school shenanigans.

latin swear words don't turn any heads here. Why? they are just sounds.

the thing that seems to slip past most people is that ALL words are just sounds. You choose to be upset and offended by them.

Letting a single word get your riled up is silly and gives more power to that word.

everytime you shush a moron saying 'filepile' you give more impact to the next moron who says it.

If there are any fans of The Fall here (apart from Sarge) they might like to know (thanks to filepile) that there are 9 Fall albums now available in mp3. Including what I think is probably Mark E.Smith's best song ever - "Bill is Dead".

Let me never hear filepile maligned again! Are you listening, quonsar? ;)

In case the lyrics weren't readily apparent, here they are:

"Last week after "Dynasty"
I had crows feet under my eyes,
Paid two days for getting high.

Freezing,
Wheezing
Got pasted in a bar,
I hope I've got the number.

These are finest times of my life,
This is the greatest time of my life,
This is the greatest time of my life,
These are the biggest times of my life.

But just lately, seeing you,
I rise a.m. off pink sheets,
I am renewed,
I am aglow,
Red brick and green is the streets,
You dressed today as if for riding school,
Your legs are so cool.
Came twice,
You thrice,
These are the greatest times of my life."

Just be grateful I didn't print it out in the Mark E. Smith font!

Saw The Fall at the Knitting Factory this summer. MES kept messing with the bass player's amp. Of course it seemed as though they were just warming up when the show ended. Some things never change. It was a good set, very "rock," but nothing even close to the drama of their show in NYC a few years back when MES (MES on the LES) was arrested and purportedly ejected from the US.
posted by anathema at 1:16 PM on November 19, 2003

Anathema: that messing with the amp is a standard feature of Fall performances, from the first time I saw them, I and twelve other bored Manchester University students in the summer of 1978, back before they'd recorded even "Rowche Rumble" up till last year here in Lisbon. Along with the on-stage heckling and berating, it's attention-getting at its very best.

The Fall just get better and better - back catalogue included.
