metafilter nominated for wizbangblog's "best group blog" [via monkeyfilter].

considering the competition, this should be a slam dunk considering it is a popularity contest. mefi is in 8th place behind 7 sites i've never heard of.
posted by birdherder at 5:23 PM on December 5, 2003

Most of the sites are ones I have never heard of.
posted by rhapsodie at 5:43 PM on December 5, 2003

And as these sites we've never heard of are presently above metafilter, it stands to reason some sort of organizational voting has taken place, and therefore we shouldn't feel bad about doing the same thing.

path, on monkeyfilter, wishes to point out to us that MeFi is "eighth in ALPHABETIC ORDER, not in order of preference." Those damn monkeys are smarter than we are. Time to nip this menace in the bud...

Path is talking about the list that you see before you vote. birdherder was talking about the list you see after you vote, in which metafilter was in 8th place. Now we're in 7th place. Go us.

On preview: What riffola said.

I'm sad to see LGF leading the 'best weblog' category... But them again I am a damned crazy commie liberal.
posted by kaibutsu at 7:31 PM on December 5, 2003

kottke has passed Instapundit and is bearing down on LGF. Go undesign!!! (Even though he is a self-exiled MeFite, at least he's better than Lileks or DenBeste)

I don't read weblogs, present company excluded.

the edge of englands sword - eh ?

sounds like a manowar album title.

ah. after poking around the site, I had a few questions. most of them are answered here. fwiw, I don't think MF will fare well considering the relatively conservative traffic Kevin gets. can't win 'em all.

You've never heard of The Volokh Conspiracy? I find it contains very interesting analysis of current legal issues from some top legal minds, but with a certain political spin.

In other news, I've nominated myself for King of The Fucking Universe, and the polls (given that I am the only voter) are leaning overwhelmingly in my favour.

Or, more succinctly : bah!

a vote for none of the above is a vote for Fark

Y'know, whether or not we win this whizbang thing...I just want to say that I really love you guys.

Is Kuro5hin really a weblog?
posted by Yelling At Nothing at 10:31 PM on December 5, 2003

No, really

Once again I am not nominated for ANYTHING!!!

This is just like the Oscars and the AAA Best Mechanic in America Award... A POPULARITY CONTEST!!!
posted by Hildago at 11:54 PM on December 5, 2003

Aww, Hildago. If it makes you feel any better, I think your blog is just spiffy.

These awards don't mean anything, anyways. Except the Oscars, which help you live longer. But who needs a long life? Feh. Useless.
posted by Salmonberry at 1:47 AM on December 6, 2003

Hildago's user profile is very amusing. I don't know why I haven't seen it before.

(Some day I'm going to sit down with a tureen-sized cut-glass bowl of benzedrine caps and a few bottles of good scotch, read each and every user profile, in order, and write the Great Metafilter Novel (I imagine a community weblog Gravity's Rainbow, as I am one to aim high, me) out of the results.)

(So who's gonna send me the bennies?)

Is wizbangblog something special?
posted by mischief at 5:09 AM on December 6, 2003

it has awards.

We have cameras....
posted by dash_slot- at 8:15 AM on December 6, 2003

webloggers sure do seem to need a lot of affirmation, pats on the back, etc. i guess deep down they realize blogging isn't really anything that special, but have difficulty reconciling that fact with how much time they spend blithering into the cybervoid. hence all these meaningless awards.

i voted like nuts on things i never heard of.
posted by dabitch at 11:44 AM on December 6, 2003

Okay, I nominated my own blog (in my "Ecosystem category"; it was too late for the REAL categories) and got ignored for the final voting. I hereby declare this competition irrelevant.
(But, hey, kottke's pulled ahead of the Little Green Fartballs and The Scripting Winer's moved into third ahead of InstaPoop!)
posted by wendell at 12:24 PM on December 6, 2003

Dave Winer just edged past Kottke and LGF.
posted by waxpancake at 12:38 PM on December 6, 2003

See? Now if the "Userlanders" can organize well enough to beat this poll, why can't we?
posted by wendell at 1:28 PM on December 6, 2003

And somebody's gotta keep the WSJ from running away with the "Media Blog" award... Not a great field to choose from, but at least I voted for Gillmor.
posted by wendell at 1:31 PM on December 6, 2003

And here comes Lawrence Lessig from out of nowhere! This poll is starting to get fun!

A truly disturbing state of affairs... I just voted for Dave Winer (I already hit jkottke twice and wanted to spread, anybody but LGF and Instapundit). It says something about the competition that I prefer Dave to the bulk of them -- I don't know what, but something.

Remember, just like the Windy City, vote early and vote often.
posted by cedar at 3:17 PM on December 6, 2003

um, why vote at all?
posted by quonsar at 5:32 PM on December 6, 2003

That was kinda my point.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 7:26 PM on December 6, 2003

Note: Totals are adjusted due to cheating. You are not doing your favorite site a favor by voting multiple times. I will find you and ban you.

You may only vote once every 12 hours in each poll.

Umm, what? Numbers adjusted due to cheating, but you can vote at least twice a day until December 14?

MeFi's now #6, BTW.
