Bankruptcy in Canada

Does anyone have any advice, resources or experience they can share on declaring bankruptcy, particularly in Canada?
This isn't for me, but for someone close to me, to whom I would like to offer as much assistance I can during a difficult time. I am not by any stretch of the imagination a lawyer, and know little to nothing of this sort of thing, but it is clear that this is the only course of action open to them right now.

My only advice is what I did. I had to declare bankruptcy after my divorce. So I hired a lawyer, and for about $1000 USD, he walked us through everything, filled out all the paperwork. That way I didn't have to know much, just answer questions.

What kind of sick joke is it that it costs $1,000 to declare bankruptcy?
