Is There a MeFi IRC?

Is there a metafilter IRC channel or Web chat room? A Metafilter IRC channel would be interesting.. like a constant day-time chat show with no host.

Oh well, whether it exists or not, I'll be sitting on #metafilter on EFNet (irc.rt.ru) in this quiet Metafilter downtime!

I love IRC. except im always on DALnet. (#newelement and #dreamless). I'll pop in once in a while though. should be fun.

Woo hoo, 3 people so far. I realized that many new web folk probably don't know what IRC is.. after all, IRC is kinda redundant nowadays in the world of Yahoo! Chat.

I tried, but for some reason I keep getting disconnected. Can't imagine why my employer (the U.S. Government) wouldn't want me on IRC during work hours. I mean, I might be gathering valuable information!

Well you didn't miss too much. There were eventually five of us (ewwgene, binking, me, hweeble, felix-t) and we discussed Paris, British kids, loneliness, cars and hostage taking.. kinda typical Metafilter subjects I guess.

Some of us have agreed to meet back up there again in the future.. so if anyone with mIRC ever wants to visit (or just sit on) #metafilter on EFNet.. be our guest, someone might turn up!

Although I fear real-time interaction - who can tell what goofy-ass thing I'll come up with on the spur of the moment trying to be funny, and offending Radical Lefties for miles around - I think this would actually be interesting. But add GlobeDominatingMegaCorp. to those who block IRC at the firewall, while permitting other, not unrelated protocols like AIM... Now, I admit I don't use AIM, but I would if it were the only way to participate in a parallel realtime MeFi universe (this is the part where you have to imagine Shatner saying, "Damnit... Spock... We NEED That... PROTOCOL").

I just logged into #metafilter on EFNet. Doug was there, "kaycee" and someone else I didn't recognize, but everyone seemed to be idle. So I left.

Following the big MetaFilter outage last week, any additional thoughts on a Mefi IRC channel? I still think a Mefi Channel could be quite an asset....
