Anyone in Austin TX interested in a meetup? If so, when/where?

Me, of course. It's been talked about.

I'd be interested. Why not shoot an email to all the Austin-area mefites who have email addresses visible in their profiles? I'm guessing not all of them read metatalk on a regular basis.

Yeah, good idea. It'd be fun if we got more than four people or something.

Majcher expressed interest recently. I can go anytime, probably. Let's plan for far enough in advance so that we actually get some people to show up. I'm envious of the MSP folks, there were a lot of them there.

Sure, I live in Austin for FIVE YEARS and no one wants to have a meet up. I move, and all of a sudden it's "Party time in the Capitol." Well, you can all kiss my ass.

Also, if you bastards meet up at The Salt Lick or Hippie Hollow, have the decency not to rub it in my face.

*sniff* I miss Austin so much...

We should rent a party barge for Hippy Hollow.

Cold Chef, please come up and join us. You're in La. now?

Austin is but a quick eight hours away. I'd ALMOST make the drive for the smoked turkey breast at Rudy's*...almost.

*The Worst Barbecue in Texas (seriously, that's how they advertise)

Hey!

Well, true, you were four exceptionally good looking people. And you had really good photos.

vraxoin is very interested. YOU HEAR ME, VRAXOIN? YOU'RE VERY INTERESTED. Dammit.

Also, one of you is very interested in buying vraxoin a beer for me. I'll pay ya back.

More instructions will follow.

Um, actually, maybe buy him a soda. I forgot: He's not a beer person.

Hmph.

I guess us 15 new yorkers were chopped liver.

Nah, it's just our cameras had beer goggles too. It's a feature, not a bug.
posted by Ufez Jones at 6:56 PM on May 5, 2004

Yes, but GORGEOUS chopped liver.

Don't me modest, ufez. Trust me, if you came to the apple, harems would be yours for the asking. Whereas, If I went to Texas, I'd probably wind up with some bubba's boot in my ass.
posted by jonmc at 6:59 PM on May 5, 2004

jonmc - obviously, you've never been to Austin :) Austin doesn't quite belong in Texas.

Austinites - where do people prefer to go? north, south, central? weekend or weeknight? maybe something like Trudy's off of Guadalupe after the students leave town?
posted by j at 7:59 PM on May 5, 2004

Trudy's. Mexican Martinis. You bastards.
posted by ColdChef at 8:01 PM on May 5, 2004

There's so many cool places to go, I don't really have any suggestions.
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 8:30 PM on May 5, 2004

It would be cool with more than 4 people, true...

The M-SP folks set up a Yahoo! Group, I think, and coordinated their get-together through that. Does anyone want to try something like that? 'Cause this will scoll off the MeTa page pretty quick. And, as Beth says, lots of people don't read MeTa, anyway.

Voice of Experience....it's a lot better to coordinate via e-mail or a group. B/c, yeah, the things you listed.

Oh, that's just part of the initiation, jonmc. After that, all you have to do is profess an undying commitment to the straight white Jebus and you're a brother for life.

I'm in. I prefer south, but I ain't picky. Someone make the mailing list go.

As for Bubba and his boot, please note the following analogy:

Austin:The Rest of Texas::San Francisco:The Rest of California

Wait, who said Salt Lick? Oh, momma.

I've created a Yahoo! Group "mefi_austin" for this and other purposes. I also sent invites to the people particpating/mentioned in this thread for whom I could find email addresses.

Almost all of the group's settings are not public, particularly membership list and the like. Membership isn't open, it's moderator approved. I'd like at least one other person to be a mod, if y'all don't mind. I set this up to be helpful, not because I want to be Grand PooBah of anything.

If I or someone else has the time, perhaps we should email invites to all the metafilter members with nearby zip codes?

Count me in and add a vote for Trudy's. Thanks, Ethereal Bligh!
posted by vraxoin at 12:21 PM on May 6, 2004

I'm up for it.
posted by mrbill at 12:26 PM on May 6, 2004

Great! Somone stop me before I get too carried away with the Yahoo! Groups stuff. I even made a logo. I also sent invites to all the local zipcode listed Mefites with available email addresses.

And there's a poll.

I've just signed up, application's pending approval. My Yahoo! userid is kaosfere. I wanna play, too! Please let me in.
posted by jammer at 2:46 PM on May 6, 2004

Yahoo groups? No thanks.

Any chance somebody can post the plans here? Or is somebody blogging this?
posted by chipr at 7:45 PM on May 6, 2004

Chipr, the membership or email addresses aren't open to the public view. But, anyway, you could just create a Yahoo! email address or some other throwaway address to use for it, tell it not to send mail, and go to the page to read the messages, and post, in order to keep up with the planning and stuff.

It looks like I'll be back in Texas this summer, so count me in for an Austin meetup.
posted by darainwa at 5:29 AM on May 7, 2004

Any chance that once the plans are made, somebody can gimme a shoutout just so that I can be extremely jealous?

(I ain't joining the yahoo group...that somehow seems more pitiful)
posted by ColdChef at 8:52 AM on May 7, 2004

yes, we can definitely post the plans soon as we figure out what's going on.
Thanks so much, Ethereal Bligh, for setting all of this up!
If you need any help with the groups or anything let me know..

I suppose that those of us in the group will discuss it and make plans and then update this thread as necessary.

Thanks, everyone! Looking forward to meeing ya!

(And, ColdChef, we'll keep you informed just to taunt you.)
