Looking at those and his earlier contributions, I second that emotion. You can feel the intelligence draining out of a thread every time he posts.

He seems to be quite proud of his trollness, in fact. At least he can't claim to be unaware of standards of etiquette.

I really wish someone else had posted that story, because the link is extremely interesting and could have generated some great discussion. It wouldn't be so bad if he were trolling about Big Brother, but his language is ruining what could be fascinating discourse.

Yes, the guy's obviously an idiot. His post did make me think about something though. I have somebody working for me this summer who [formerly, until I chewed his ass out one day] tossed around the word 'retard' in that same flippant manner, very amused over the whole thing. It's interesting because this particular guy is only slightly less socialized than many other people I know; that is he's not a complete neandertal. I find it intereseting that there are many people who wouldn't toss around the elementary-school level 'faggot', yet seem to think that 'retard' is somehow even borderline acceptable.

I'm sure I'll take plenty of shit for this, but it takes two for a troll to pull it off, ya know.
Perhaps some of you are a wee bit too concerned with who is posting right-thinking thoughts.

The only thing more of a drag than an ignorant comment is wave after wave of people pointing out their horror and shock at the incorrectness of said comment.

Is it really so hard to simply ignore that which you don't agree with?
This is a place of ideas, you can't expect to like them all.

It's not all that amazing... that's what trolls do: they illicit response.

He'll be banned soon enough.

Vis10n, you're right, but I mean....when they SAY they're trolling...I guess, in reality, people keep responding because they're, well, good people.
posted by Doug at 11:02 AM on July 13, 2001

Ugh, dong_resin - you are so right on. Those who may bite the troll's bait should really resist. I fell for it hook line and sinker. It's a hot-button issue for me - as I said in my post, my brother has autism, it's been a source of ridicule and reactionary defensiveness my whole life. When I see that casual use of the word "retard", it's like someone just spit on me and my family. (Go ahead and spit tweek, if you're reading this).

Now I'm biting my tongue, because - despite an antagonistic retort - there is absolutely nothing more that should be said. And it doesn't contribute to anything. And it's ugly when a mob of self-righteous people screams "thou shalt not utter that word". But I really hate to hear or read it, you know. Ugh.

As frykitty said earlier, too bad this interesting topic had to be posted in such an infantile and inflammatory way.
posted by kokogiak at 11:11 AM on July 13, 2001

I don't think he's actually trolling throughout the entire thread. It seems to me that he does actually have worthwhile things to say, he's just unable to do so without posting a few other comments in there to inflame people. I think his reaction to being called out on the usage of the word "retard" was WAY too defensive and the "Homosaywhat" in the original post is still.. confusing me, but I don't think a person who simply had trolling in mind would post such a good topic like that. (More likely he'd just post a "BUSH SUCKS" article & start ranting or something :)
posted by zempf at 11:19 AM on July 13, 2001

Perhaps not so much a troll, but a cretin.

And, for what it's worth, "homosaywhat?" was never funny.
posted by solistrato at 11:22 AM on July 13, 2001

They ELICIT response. But "illicit response" has some depth to it, too.

You know what I'm sick of? All this talk of trolls.

When you meet someone at a party who says something inappropriate or baiting, do you immediately call him/her a troll? Can we relax a little?
posted by ZippityBOP at 11:37 AM on July 13, 2001

It's one thing to be inappropriate or bait, I do it from time to time, it's another to be overtly agressive in it.

Also, I still catch myself saying something is "retarded" or "gay" at times. My political correctness chip has not completely kicked in.
posted by owillis at 11:42 AM on July 13, 2001

It's not often that a troll reveals the inner bitterness that made him want to troll in the first place. Obviously this whole episode was an excuse for tweek! to reveal his wrongful treatment as a child.

When he had everyone's attention, he went right for the "But seriously folks" thing about how he was wrongly included in "Special Ed" as a child. Like he felt negative attention to his bitterness was better than no attention at all.

--and I would just like to break in here and say this is my first-ever post to MetaTalk. I'd like to thank all the little people that made this possible...That's showbiz!

"Trollness"? Shouldn't it be "trollishness" or "trollitude" or "trollition"?

I agree that there's too much calling people trolls around here, but I'm fascinated by alternative forms of the word.

The thread in question made me very sad, ultimately. It started out uglily, and then people came along and disagreed with tweek mostly civilly. Even Skot was restrained. Then the thread turned into a real discussion and for a while people were ignorning tweek. Then at some point, they started to pile on him again. That's when I got sad. It does seem like it's impossible for a discussion not to disintegrate around here.

I would now like to borrow the baby Jesus' hanky.

He’s an ass, not a troll. There is a distinct difference between him and the Private_(Whoever) yutz.

If you don’t like Tweek, ignore him.

I, however, would let him teach me French.

Trollsterism is inherently showboative; don't watch the show, and they go back under the bridge.

You guys jumped on him like hungry piranhas, though :) As someone who occasions enjoys tossing a bit of flamebait, that's the hook, baby. Troll finds the button that turns on the heat, they PUSH.

But there's no reason, if a link is good but a troll is there, we can't simply talk around him/her. If everyone declines to get snitty, said troll will eventually split for more aggravatory pastures.

I have to admit that his troll was so juicy that, even knowing it was a troll, it was hard to fight the urge to respond. I even wrote something, but replaced it with the billy goat comment. I think I called him an asshole in the <!-- comments -->, though.

The politically correct term for the "little people" is the same thing it has been for centuries: "fair folk". And if I were you, I'd be careful not to offend them--I failed to leave them some of my ice cream the other day, and they've been causing all sorts of nasty bugs in my computer ever since.

My political correctness chip has not completely kicked in.

Anyone remember when being "politically correct" was just known as being "polite"? Or "tactful." Or "mannerly"?

Not every turn of phrase is in ill-favor for political reasons. In fact, few are. Sometimes, they're just rude.
