Spell checker isn't checking spells for me

Spell checker isn't checking spells for me, it says it is but just does the 'trumpet fingering' thing for ages.

Also, prefs not remembered when I loaded up today.

I went to customize, made _no_ changes, then _saved_
'changes', and voila! - prefs remembered.

Odd.
