I switched over to Apache, so some stuff might not be working (like spellcheck). If you find any bugs with MetaFilter, MetaTalk, Ask MetaFilter, or any other site that used to be on this server, let me know here.

weird spellcheck works in metatalk just fine.

The Bold, Italics and Link options in Meef don't seem to work, old bean.

Now that I notice, they fail in Meet too.

Ditto the Green.

Oh, I'm having trouble getting perl to play right with apache and activestate. If anyone's an expert in apache on windows and has run perl and stuff like MT before, can you email me? I can't blog anything on my personal site until I fix it, as foo.cgi files are being served up as text right now and not being parsed by the server.

When I search for a MetaTalk thread, and click on the results, the thread does not load. It looks like the URL it's trying to load (for example) is this:

http://metatalk.metafilter.com/metadetail.mefi/7605

Brief Description:

"Invalid list index 2.

In function ListGetAt(list, index [, delimiters]), the value of index, 2, is not a valid as the first argument (this list has 1 elements). Valid indexes are in the range 1 through the number of elements in the list. "

If I check by my username and pull the link from there, the thread loads splendidly. I can send you a screenshot and/or paste the full error code if you'd like.

Something strange has happened to the RSS feeds: the old URL now feeds me Ask Metafilter instead of the main page, and the XML button on the front page now seems to be an XML file for the sidebar?

The site feels so speedy.

Ditto on the RSS bug. I get nothing for the old blue RSS feed...
This: http://xml.metafilter.com/rss.xml appears to be the sidebar.

Matt, the only way I've been able to get Movable Type to work on a Windows server, was to change the file extentions from cgi to pl. Then again, that's using IIS.

No, you can change the server mappings to run .cgi files with Perl, assuming you have administrative access. On IIS or Apache. Although on Unix, you don't need to; the system knows to look inside the script for the shebang line and run the script with the specified engine.

Is is just me or is MeFi extremely slow right now?
posted by AstroGuy at 9:55 AM on June 10, 2004

It does seem slow, not at all like it was when Apache was on port 8080. I'm guessing Matt is still working on the configuration.
posted by tommasz at 10:08 AM on June 10, 2004

slow. and jrun errors.

[opininionated bastage mode]
see the problem with mefi is all this sappy shit hung on it - like the speil chucker and the link/bold/italic crap. the latter is just extraneous fenestration that only serves to dumb down the posting membership, instead of encouraging people to learn how to make proper <a>, <b>, <i> tags, something people should be taught in 4th grade (they could replace dodgeball or something). the speil chucker would be rendered moot if only he'd code something USEFUL, like the ability to go back in and edit a post or comment you have made. in this respect, mefi is much like the bush administration. lottsa shiny stuff to keep your mind off the atrocities. :-)

I think the one on :8080 was used a lot less heavily.

Are you using 1.3 or 2 Matt? If the former, you could try upping the number of threads used.

Ah, 2.0.49. Forget I said anything.

posted by timeistight at 10:46 AM on June 10, 2004

People, metafilter is probably not going to be any faster because of apache. The whole idea behind this switch is to make it more stable, so it crashes less often, so it can actually be up and running for a whole day.
posted by wobh at 10:47 AM on June 10, 2004

P.S. This means fewer of the "connection refused" errors and more jruns.
posted by wobh at 10:50 AM on June 10, 2004

Matt, you rock. The server software you use shouldn't make a difference to your visitors, but sometimes, it does.

Speel check still not working for me. It just hangs at the "Checking Spelling, Please Wait" animated graph thing.

posted by Capn at 11:40 AM on June 10, 2004

wobh: Why not? Apache was a lot faster when it sat on :8080 (ie less people used it), so that suggests it's not CPU bound or disk bound (as it shared those resources with the IIS-run requests), and it's definately not network bound.
posted by fvw at 12:21 PM on June 10, 2004

The bottleneck looks to be the ColdFusionMX engine jrun, which is using java, and tends to gobble up processor power. After I get all the bugs worked out of the server software move, I'll move on to getting CFMX to speed up if possible.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 12:41 PM on June 10, 2004

Ah, so it is a cpu-bound thing and the apache-was-faster was caused by scheduling. Figures, really; my bad.

So does not capitalizing and not applying emphasis where you mean to emphasize. It's up to you to pick the style you want to use. Look at it this way: the buttons at least give the non-HTML friendly a fighting chance, saving untold thousands of all-italics front pages.
