Is Google screwing with us, or did 495,000 different people really enter that contest?

Actually, he only won the second part of the contest (the "stayer" round), but that's because he didn't enter until the first round was very nearly over. It's neat, but another scary indication of how much power bloggers have over Google.

And, uh, why didn't you post this to mefi proper?

No, it's an indication of how much power popular sites have over Google. Weblogs or not. I'm a blogger but I couldn't have won the contest the way Anil did.

From what I hear, Anil is a winner left and right these days. Congrats friendly friend!

Ah, but see, that's the point .... Anil couldn't have won the contest alone ... he won because of all the other mmoncur's out there who say "I'm a blogger and I'll l link to Anil's site for this contest".

So yes, it has to do with how popular his site is, but it also has to do with how web-connected his readership is.
